Black Pete is still fairly popular in some european countries, despite more recent controversy. Some places have tried to claim he's actually black because of the soot climbing down chimneys with Santa and not actually black face.

"it sounded like farts", that's all brass instruments. because the mechanics of how the sound is produced is the same. when playing a brass instrument your lips basically form a sphincter against the mouthpiece and the vibration of your lips as you let the air out gets amplified by the instrument and channeled through longer/shorter pipes to produce the sound you want.
