This channel has been such a big help for me! I had my first dental appointment in 6 years today and had to have a middle cleaning. Not a pleasant experience, but so worth it to fix how my teeth look and feel. I can’t stop staring at them and how great they look now! And the tips from your channel actually helped me get a good seal of approval from my hygienist and dentist! They were shocked, for all the build I had, what great shape my teeth and gums were in. I only had one slightly deeper than normal pocket. Thank you so so much for all this great content you provide for us 💕

Buy a water flosser/ water pic and use everyday. Quit smoking if you do smoke and X the sugary drinks. I know all of those are hard to quit but your gums will thank you. I am guilty of all of those things myself and that’s exactly why I pay thousands of dollars every year for my dental procedures.

Thank you for explaining how things work..

So I went to a dentist for a checkup for the first time in more than a decade and that was about 13 years ago and he just got stuck in and gave me a deep clean, I had a ton of tartar which I never even knew I had, wasnt what I would call painful or anything but he was scraping around the teeth for a good hour. Luckily he said it was not serious, but if left untreated, over time it would lead to serious gum disease, The tartar seemed to come back again at my next visit, but since then ive never had the need to have a deep clean, so i must be doing something right!

See if you can get laser gum treatments. He will essentially burn under your gum line (doesn't hurt much at all) and it stimulates gums to create scabs (which I know sounds disgusting) but it causes the gums to cling tighter to the bone & also get a good sonicare tooth brush. Invest in at least the $40 one but if you can get the better one that has the gum health function (~$80-100) get that one. It will last you at least 3 years but it will seriously heal up your gums and the tartar won't be able to build up under there. In the long run you'll be thanking yourself for the investment because you won't lose your teeth.

I've learnt so much from you Whitney. Here in my country, deep cleaning is called Root Planning or Root Surface Debridement. Middleman cleaning is often called deep cleaning by regular dentist and subgingival scaling by my periodontist. And regular cleaning sometimes can clean into subgingival area as well. As you can imagine, it's all very confusing when you call up the dentist and the receptionist say Yes! We do deep cleaning. But their deep cleaning is just slightly below gum line. Not the deep cleaning as you mentioned here, which is called Root Planing/Root Surface Debridement. I wish everyone in every country just sticks to the same name as per described by you.

When I went to the dentist last last month, my hygienist performed a debridement, while not a full cleaning, she said she wanted to see if that would negate the need for a deep cleaning. :) You're right about the x-rays... one of my upper molars look perfect from the outside, but underneath the filling, there's a problem area, so she was surprised when I said I didn't feel any sensitivity, etc. with the tooth.

I had a deep scale and planing done 2 months ago, after 2 years without a hygienist appointment. I was offered no numbing at all. It was all done in one session and OMG, when I got home I felt like I had been punched in the face!!! I had to take 2 ibuprofen and go to bed for a couple of hours and feel sorry for myself 😂 I also had an x-ray done 2 weeks ago which showed minimal bone loss and long healthy roots and the good news is, I went back to the hygienist today and she was really impressed by my cleaning and maintenance. She said my gums had tightened up already and the cleaning was a LOT less painful. I’m down for regular 3 monthly sessions for now to keep on top of it.

In 2016-17 I underwent a few Lazer gum treatments where he essentially burned my gums to stimulate healing & also got several custom crowns. Oh yeah! I also got all 4 impacted wisdom teeth removed surgically! I also bought the world's most expensive toothbrush which was like more than $200 (sonicare lol) from the dentist and my mouth was in seriously amazing shape! For a time ... I went thru a divorce, took opioids for a year, and started smoking again and omg the damage happened so fast. I think my sonicare saved me from tooth loss but now I am taking it very seriously because I'm in my mid 30's and have endured agony from tooth decay around those neglected crowns. Thankfully, getting those wisdom teeth taken out allowed my teeth to naturally space out some so a big portion of my gums do not have deep pockets. But the molars are not good. Ive since quit all the smoking and other nonsense. Living healthier. Still use my sonicare. I know my tooth hygiene routine is more involved than most people. I brush 2-3 times per day with stannous flouride toothpaste (paridontax to ease pain.) water floss and regular floss and gum stimulation. I was able to get 2 root canals approved by insurance just waiting for that special dentist to have my appointment. The dentists keep convincing me to keep my two problem teeth in the back. I have begged them to pull them out for me to stop the periodic pain. They have told me to be patient because the root canals will be worth it. I guess losing those teeth will change my face structure & possibly hurt the teeth around it. Does anyone know if that's true?

Experienced 'Deep Cleaning' for my very first time by dental hygienist following dentists novocaine oral vaccinations, was quite painful where I felt the needle was in my gums for way too long, and then another shot following 5 - 10 min. I was also surprised by the financial cost, i was expecting somewhere just under ( $ 350 ) however no way I had to pay ( $ 575 ) cash on hand with no dental insurance, my Dentist was my Hispanic neighbors friend who pursuaded me to go through this dental practice for future gum disease prevention and prevention of tooth decay. Things felt good following Deep Cleaning appointment, to visit my Dentist once in every four months for cleaning and a checkup for ( $ 100 ) per-dental-visit, and he tells me it's a friendly favor he does to his family and relatives. Idk at this point whether I'd go through Deep Cleaning for a long time, as I believe once in five years is enough. It's not for everyone, especially for those with a tight budget towards dentistry

I'll be having the deep cleaning and I'm nervous I had PTSD from dental trauma. I also have a heart mumur and although I'm 47 I still need to take the antibiotics before the deep cleaning and of course my anxiety meds ..I'm really nervous but also feeling very courageous. Because years ago I wanted to do be in Entertainment, film theater and I use to do commercial modeling . But years later I was in a horrific car accident and lost my my front tooth I was 25 years old ..then I went to the dentists that a year later was sured for nsl practice ..in other words I wasn't the only patient that he injured both physically and mentally ..and every since then I became afraid ..no . Terrified of the dentist even getting X-rays would trigger me and cause me to cry . Luckily for me I have a dentist now where the whole office down to the janitor lol is sOOO kind and patient with me. They totally understand. And they are all watching my bravery progress 😊 I believe I'm in good hands .but alot of times people don't understand the story behind why someone lets their dental hygiene go . Before the trauma I would often get compliments on my smile , now I barely smile and have learned to even talk where my missing tooth doesn't show . But I trust that soon I'll be able to smile big again ..in fact I love smiling , laughing ..sometimes I feel guilty for being so afraid . I'm pretty courageous in all other areas of my life .but again , you just never know what a person has gone through. I can do social media very well because I can hide my smile or the condition of my teeth better . But in person there will be no meet and greets lol 😂 not till I get back my smile . It really has affected my self esteem although I'm attracted. Id much rather be healthy annnd attractive.

Hi Whitney. My dentist refused to clean some yellowish material (probably tartar) that was sitting on top of the very last molar tooth. He said cleaning that would result in sesitivity issues. My question is, should I see another dentist to get it cleaned? Or can it be removed by homecare itself?
@0neInTheChambie

Tartar cant be removed at home. If your current dental provider refuses to do it you can always ask another dentist (with the original dentist's concerns mentioned) for a second opinion. If this dentist is willing to do it and you have no issues with switching dentists then you do that. No use in staying with a dentist that does not listen to the patient's wishes.

Each practice is different like how some dentists think some cavities are small or some think they are bigger, it’s up to their interpretation of your mouth not that they ripped you off more that that’s what they were trained in their dental school training. Some states teach different guidelines and not every hygienist you go to in your state graduated in your state. So different guidelines. Or newer and improved guide lines for newer graduates where more veteran hygienists are not updated to new information, could be either or.

Some patients request every 4 months (3x/yr) or every 3 months (4x/yr)- you may need to pay out of pocket for additional cleanings, but definitely worthy. Recommend - Electric toothbrush (Oral B or Sonicare)- gently rotating the bristles towards your gum line while brushing- when brushing near the gum line, your grip and pressure of your grasp on the toothbrush should be very light, flossing daily using the “c-shape” or “hugging” each tooth gently, Waterpik’s irrigate the gums with pressurized water, and using a good oral rinse. With the recession, recommend getting fluoride treatment every time you go to the dentist in order to protect the exposed root surfaces and the enamel of the crown. Calculus will harbor quicker in more porous areas, such as exposed root surfaces.

Where does the full mouth debridement fit in? I thought this was in between the regular cleaning and RSP cleaning.
@TeethTalk
@TeethTalk Ай бұрын
Think of the full mouth debridement as a preparatory procedure that helps clear the way for accurate diagnoses and further treatments if needed! Below is the code description -- hope this helps! Full Mouth Debridement (D4355): This is done when a patient has significant tartar buildup that makes it difficult for the dentist or hygienist to accurately evaluate the health of the gums and teeth. It’s typically a first step to remove heavy deposits and allow for a clearer assessment of the gums before proceeding with further treatment, like a regular cleaning or periodontal therapy.

@@TeethTalk yes, I paid for several of these procedures, out-of-pocket as I did not have any dental insurance, and I wanted my gums to be better so I paid forever. I did several almost to Bremen’s and they wanted it to go even cleaner so they sent me to a periodontist to get the RSP done and upon that visit they were mad at me and wrote a letter to my Dentist on how bad I was and I don’t know like I feel Dentist just want everybody’s mouth to be perfect but I feel 0% pain, so what is the problem. I just hate how Dentist want everything to be perfect and they just want all this money and I’ve spent tens of thousands of dollars on my mouse in the last 10 years and it sucks but I am not having any of my teeth polled, because I refuse to have any pulled .

I had my teeth cleaned by a dental hygienist professional seven months ago. My teeth still hurt. Thanks professional dental hygienist person. I am being sarcastic. A month ago someone in her office called me to come back for another torture session, excuse me, dental cleaning. I said, "No. My teeth still hurt from the last time". The caller did not seem shocked or surprised or apologetic.

I caution anyone that your Dental coverage may not cover 100% deep cleaning and this may cause the facility to have you sign a promise to pay including a 3rd party credit form where you will incur a hard inquiry on your credit report. You may have easily covered such costs with your credit card. The facility may obscure this fact. Be diligent. Present your credit card for additional costs. You probably don't need the credit application for service in a normal cleaning scenario.

there's a natural space between your gums and your tooth (called the sulcus) and it should be between 1-3mm. if it's higher than 4mm, then it's oftentimes called a pocket. floss properly cleans the sulcus but it can't properly reach down into pockets. here's a video of mine that explains more -- hope this helps: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aGa7k42wbZisqqc

Any general dentist performs this type of cleaning. Unless your pockets are really deep, then they might recommend you see a gum specialist known as a periodontist.

Note ive not had an xray in over a year. And i have deep pockets i was told due to meds i take it causes my gums to swell and increased tarter and I a bit of boneloss ????😮😮

Generally its best not to miss a cleaning, but you can always take extra care of your oral hygiene at home, like floss regularly, brush after each meal or at least a mouth rinse, eat healthier foods and just show up for your next appointment, now if you are in rehabilitation for gingivitis or periodontal disease then try to show up always.

@@TeethTalk I mean for a separate appt if the person comes as a new patient and ends up being diagnosed with it.
@melodyproehl9841
@melodyproehl9841 Жыл бұрын
@@musicgirl999 yes- usually the time is set for your first appt to do all assessments including a comprehensive examination which is a detailed exam. Establishing patients takes quite a bit of time and there may not be enough time for the hygienist for the schedule patient to complete the gingival inflammation cleaning. Typically a new patient appt includes full medical history and accuracy, blood pressure, oral cancer screening, periodontal charting, dental charting (any restorations or missing teeth present- which takes quite a bit of time, alone) full series X-rays (which can be 18-19 pictures- with time to process the X-rays if they are phosphor plates), reviewing these X-rays in great depth takes some time, intraoral pictures may be taken for establishing the beginning of your time at an office for documentation, sometimes a diagnodent is use to detect early cavities, then speaking with the dental team about the best treatment options for your case. The dentist (-mind you, while the hygienist is working, the dentist is more than likely in the middle of other procedures in another operatory, like doing fillings or crowns) then reviews every piece of documentation collected by the hygienist and checks every tooth individually. With all of the assessments that may be completed- the schedule may not be allotted for a gingival inflammation cleaning. Gingival inflammation cleaning =more bleeding which means more rinsing and suctioning. detecting buildup which is covered by the inflammed gums takes more precision than a typical cleaning as the buildup is scattered and not just in one spot on the tooth. Yes, prophylaxis cleanings are precise, but by this point, patients are established and the hygienist is able to complete the cleaning in the allotted time. Once the treatment is planned for a gingival inflammation cleaning- the front desk has to get confirmation with the insurance and evidence for why this treatment was decided, that it is okay to proceed as this is a different cost and this should be reviewed prior to proceeding so the patient is aware of the APPROXIMATE out of pocket cost. Many times hygienists are given only 60-80 mins for a new patient. And when splitting up all the procedures, this would leave MAYBE AT MOST - 20 mins to complete a cleaning after assessments. I hope this helps.
