It didn't fail in it direction it failed because Disney wanted it too with it bombing Disney had the reason they needed to completely stop traditional animation the only traditional animators left are in charge of image projection at the parks.

For everyone about to say why there is air in space, the book narrator nails the explanation in the first 10 seconds. The layer of outer space they sail in exists within an “etherium”, a sort of stable interplanetary (possibly intergalactic) atmosphere, and somewhere beyond that is the airless void we see space as. From what I can understand, it’s a setting based on an old European concept of space (correct me if I’m wrong).

I find it absolutely fascinating that you don't like Morph but do like B.E.N. Usually people's opinions are quite the other way around. (I like 'em both.) You also mentioned that you liked Dr. Doppler's design... his animator, Sergio Pablos, went on to direct the movie Klaus (released by Netflix) and you can very much see his style in the character designs there as well.

I think it's great that Disney decided to do a boy movie. My sister recently noticed this but in animation there's not much of a space for exploring boy's issues. There are certainly movies directed at boys but rarely ones that comment on their struggles or experiences they may have whereas we have a plethora of those for girls. I think it's important really and I'm glad this exists for that even though Disney tried to bury it. Not to say boys can't like animated films typically directed at girls or vice versa but it's a different experience to simply watch and enjoy a movie and have a movie speak to you and your experiences.

I recommend looking up BREADSWORD’s video on treasure planet. It wasn’t so much of a corporate decision to make the movie, rather that it was a passion project for some of the writers at Disney during the 90s

That's an interesting observation. It makes me notice that unlike other Disney films featuring male leads (Aladdin, Hercules, Tarzan, Atlantis, etc.) there is no female lead starring opposite of Jim as a love interest. The focus is entirely on his relationship with Silver. I think it might be the only Disney film to do that.

The big two things this movie had going against it when it released was that it was a) designed as a Summer movie but got delayed to the holiday season, and b) released while the Santa Clause sequel and a Harry Potter movie were both still in theatres. Disney wanted to bury it because it was costing them a lot of time and money.

The song is I'm Still Here by John Rzeznik, singer for the band Goo Goo Dolls. The main reason for this movie failing is because Disney didn't want to do 2D animation anymore. They made sure this wasn't marketed well nor released at a good date. No matter what they've done to this movie, it will still be one of my top favorites. The Black Cauldron is a very obscure one, because of how dark it was.

Treasure Planet's failure at the box office is especially tragic considering it was Ron Clements' und John Musker's passion project. But hey, it was an Oscar nominee in 2003 at least.

My late Grandfather bout its film and me and my cousins watch it together, it is the only Disney film that Grandfather has ever bout for us, me, my siblings and my cousins will treasure this movie, when any of our parents were gone some were then he will come to us and be with us, he was my Mentor and my problem solver, I miss him much even now.

Another Disney film I adored was 1986's "The Great Mouse Detective". Like Treasure Planet (which I also love and don't understand why it wasn't more popular) it used computer animation for certain action scenes. Many critics felt this film helped steer Disney back on course after the previous disappointment of the Black Cauldron. The voice acting was also amazing and Vincent Price all but stole the show in every scene he was in. The Great Mouse Detective is another Great Disney film without a fairytale princess that I highly recomend.

The lines on Jim's face were there for a character development purpose more than as part of the design :) same with his clothing, as the movie progresses you will notice his clothing gets lighter and the marks eventually fade by the end ^_^

I have to saw, I never liked Ben-as a kid or now-but I can at least respect his character and that he went crazy after being alone for so long. The Black Cauldron, also based on a book is probably the most obscure disney film that stands out really memorably in my head. That could be because there were scenes that utterly terrified me as a kid though lol. Also, I love Treasure Planet, but Titan A.E. tops it on my list for an animated, boy-oriented space adventure film. They did similar things with the animation in terms of combining CG and 2d, however Titan A.E. I think was more successful at it and imo showcases a lost opportunity in how animation could have developed if full-3d hadn't overtaken everything else.

This is the golden age of 2d animation, imo. Disney makes Treasure Planet, Atlantis the Lost Empire. In the meantime Dream Works makes Prince of Egypt and Sinbad. I agree completely - this is such an underrated and underdiscussed movie! One of my favorite films I grew up with!

at 16:50 when you said no one cares... so many of us care dude. so many of us are angry that disney sent this film out to die as a way to put the style of animation to rest. they marketed it terribly and they released it against a harry potter film and other popular serie films. it was clement and muskers passion project that was reluctantly approved by disney execs almost 20 years after the two directors first pitched the idea in literally the 80’s. still, though it didn’t get the attention it deserved by the public, it did get nominated for the academy award for best animated feature film. also, the scores are really beautiful if you’re into that, esp the electric guitar implemented into the orchestras, certainly matched the 30/70 futuristic to old timey rule they had going throughout the movie, just- so so cool. as for the grungy emo 2002 vibes from the songs and jim’s style, they may seem outdated to some but personally i find it to be charming and relatable in its own way lol. we all have a bit of angsty teenager in us from somewhere back in our youth that we never quite let go of! i’m glad you enjoyed the film and i had fun listening to your commentary. thanks!

Have you seen The Prince Of Egypt by DreamWorks? It’s definitely a must watch if you haven’t seen it yet and it’s also a criminally underrated movie. If you only want to review Disney movies though then I’d recommend Walt Disney’s Atlantis instead.

If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend 'Treasure Planet - Disney's Biggest Mistake' by BREADSWORD. It goes into a massive amount of detail concerning the production, the original idea, how hard it was for the people behind it to even get the go ahead from the high ups as well the plans thy had for the sequel and TV show, (they had Tim Curry lined up for the sequel villain), it's a bit over half an hour long so not that time intensive but it can't be an 'in the background' video you need to pay attention to it. If at all possible, I at least, would love it to be a reaction video on your part, but I understand if you don't want to do that to other KZbinrs who rely on this platform.

Disney wanted this movie to fail. It was a passion project of the directors. Disney doesn’t care to tell stories about the struggle of growing up without a father in the home, which is more relatable than ever. Some fathers leave, but most often there’s the mothers leaving/instigating a divorce. Both are bad, but yeah. The Fatherless Generation is a very real and sad thing to look into.

Atlantis: the lost empire (2001) is another Disney movie that was left out to dry... not AS bad as treasure planet. These 2 movies were my everything growing up.
