I really like orange wines. I've been in Georgia and visited small family winery. They have both a Europinian and a Georgian way of producing orange wines. It was very interesting to compare. Here in Ukraine (before full-scale war began) almost each wine bar or restaurant had a few sample of orange wine. So it is quite popular in Ukraine. Thanks for the video!

It's one of the things i loved about living in Ukraine, the availability of wines from less traditional countries. Though, of course, one could argue that Georgian wines are as traditional one can get. I lived in Kyiv where the famous Good Wine shop is located. They have very good Georgian wines in rotation. Best is, they don't all start at crazy prizes, so you can work your way 'up'. But Georgia has more to offer than just orange wines. I can definitely recommend undertaking a wine trip there. Georgia is one of the countries where my wine career started, so those wines hold a special place in my heart - favorite variety there is Goruli Mtsvane. Early in my wine career I heavily focused on amber wines. To this day, I think that Western Slovenia/ Eastern Italy (Goriška Brda/Collio) the overall quality is the highest from producer to producer. That being said, what the Austrians, Aussies, and Californians are doing can be very impressive! Nice selection there. I like all of those wines (esp Fio’s traditional Riesling) and great to show Foradori!

Thanks so much for this video! I live in Kakheti, the predominant wine making region of Georgia, and so I’m happy to see that the Georgian selection was from Kakheti. (Other regions also produce some lovely wines, but as a representative of the orange/amber style, Kakheti is the standard. The exception is maybe Iago’s Chinuri, which is out of Kartli. My favorite non-eastern Georgia wines are from Baia’s Wines in Imereti.) I’m also happy to see that the Georgian bottle is in a little more accessible price range than most of the others. Here, wine is for everyone, and so many families are still making their own wine. Okro wines out of Sighnaghi where I live is trying a new line with screw caps made for early drinking in the Georgian manner and at a lower price point. They do everything from extended kvevri fermented skin contact to pet nat, all lovely. In general, it’s a good time for Georgian wines. Lots of winemakers are taking the strengths of this 8,000 year tradition and putting their own heart and energy into it. I’m going to join the Aussies in asking for it to be called amber wine, but from the number of times Konstantin said “orange wines” in this video alone, I fear that horse has left the barn. 😂

I work at a wine shop here in Southern California. We sell a pretty big selection of natural wines for the area which is mostly suburban with not a lot of specialty shops like ours. Orange wines are fantastic but I have tried many to know that just because they are orange, does not mean they are good -- or even interesting for that matter. I recently tried an orange wine from Slovakia called the Traja Boxer, it is a Sauvignon Blanc. It was the perfect amount of funky, acidic, and savory. On the other hand, there have been a couple orange wines which have left me with nasty heartburn because of how acidic they are. "Natural" wine is what got me into the wine world in general, and I will always be thankful for that. I cannot wait to see with time and refinement what great orange and natural wines come out from all over the world. My shop is Uptown Wine Merchant in Yucaipa, California. :) Great video as always Mr. Baum

In Portugal the "curtimenta" process has been around for at least 300 years and is currently popular with wines from the Vinhos Verdes region, particularly the ones heralding from producer Anselmo Mendes. Delicious full-boded orange wines that go through 6-12 months of oaking.

I wouldn't drink an orange wine just because it's orange, it takes quality for me to appreciate something, regardless of what category it's in. I really appreciate when a winemaker wants to make an expression of a place, grape or style, and making the wine orange is just one way of expressing that. The fact that the methods used by such winemakers is considered by the natural wine movement to be "natural" or "hands-off" is to me just coincidental; the methods are in any case choices made by the winemaker. One winemaker I visited in the Pfalz (Jürgen Krebs in Freinsheim) doesn't bottle any orange wines, but 25% of his Viognier (which is very good!) is fermented with skin maceration, and could have been bottled as an orange wine were it not blended with the rest of the wine which was vinified as a traditional white wine. This to me is a very interesting way to add some more texture and aromatics to the final wine, and it posed an interesting question whether the wine was a white wine, or some weird combination of white and orange wine. I also really liked the MVØ orange wine from my visit to Weinbach, a blend of Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer.

I love orange/amber wines, but here in Taiwan/Asia they are very much a niche product and you pay double or triple what you pay for white wine. I've tasted a few, but don't have any in my wine collection atm, I think it's a great alternative to red/white/rose. Maybe you have to be either a wine geek and/or an adventurous wine drinker to enjoy it. Great video Konstantin and looking forward to the next one.

Thanks for another great wine review! I'm a huge fan of amber wines. However, as a WSET student I'm inclined to agree with one significant criticism about this kind of wine. Actually, it was mentioned in the review - the problem of amber wine identification in blind tasting. It seems like amber wines are more about technique than the grape variety and terroir. Recently I visited the amber wine fest in Wien. There was an incredible amount of great amber wines from all over Europe. And while I enjoyed the quality and the diversity of styles very much, still the problem of terroir and variety remained unsolved. I shall much appreciate your opinion about this matter.

I had a couple of orange wines before - and I would love to love them - but I struggle. Call me old fashioned (admit there is an irony here given orange is old-new-fashioned), but I like yeasty notes mostly in Champagne and cider and bruised apple aromas in ciders. I believe that I had a couple of Silvaners that I liked in natural style, and yet the fact I can't recall which producer speaks for itself - or for my lack of professionalism in taking notes. Some how I do end up in line with your ratings though, as I do enjoy Grauburgunders that spent some time on the mash. (Braunewells Klopp and Teufelspfad for instance.)

A friend has unknown, ancient vine, grapes in Utah (USA), and the white had such thick skins I couldn't resist. I'm a little concerned about MLB as the hybrid grapes (which these most likely are) have higher malic acid concentrations. Is diacetyl desirable in orange wines?

I would be interested in skin contact wine from EU. That would be easier for us to consolidate our organic red and organic Belgian chocolates. I am not necessarily looking for organic skin contact wine. That might be hard to come by, but I am looking for very low SO2 content, hopefully not exceeding 50 PPM. Interesting video. I confess I didn't know very much about orange wines. I'll keep my eye out for some.

For me as a lover of brandy I like wines like these because they often taste a bit oak barrel just like brandy :)

Hey Konstantin! I’m a fan of your channel and wanted to ask: is there a grape variety in particular that has more potential for orange wine? My family has a vineyard in Canada and I’m trying to convince them to make an orange wine because I think it pairs very well with todays food.

I'm not Konstantin but I try to answer your question. According to my knowledge and experience the grape varieties Traminer, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and to some extend Riesling are very well suited to produce Orange Wines. But other withe grapes will work as well. Give it a try!

I've tried a few on the local market, but I always find myself underwhelmed by them. I can always think of half a dozen whites, at a lower price as well, that I'd rather be drinking.

I'll tell you what I think of orange wine in april... when I open my fortified orange wine...made from actual oranges. 🙃 First one I made so it might turn me into a frog-prince when I drink it.😂....🧙‍♀

Hi Konstantin, Israel has a very developed and highly decorated wine culture, would you consider trying Israeli wines? I’ll be glad to help with choosing wines, wineries, and so forth. We have very a lot of different terriors, wine makers, climates, grape varieties and so on and so on. Some wines are worthy of 20-30 years of aging. And I believe talking a bit about how the culture of “kosher” wines as a subject would be very interesting. Cheers.

Great videos! I love the insightful "geeky stuff" - please more of it :-) But why down vote a wine for deliberately being between an orange wine and a white wine? I would not down vote a pomelo for not being a grapefruit :-)

Georgian wine is very oxidative. In real life differences between normal wine and oxidative wine more than 1 point. I also drink my wines if it is an oxidated but i know for sure is not oxidated wine give much more pleasure for a dinner. It is always like this.

Orange wines are super hit or miss for me. Can't say I've ever had a GREAT orange wine but haven't been drinking them too long. I find I tend to enjoy them more when the skins are left on the juice for only 10-12 days as opposed to 20+

If you like less maceration time, you might enjoy Craven's Pinot Gris (out of South Africa), it's definitely on the lighter side of orange. Still shows fresh fruit and beautiful florality, all the while with some of the lovely notes you get from orange wines.

I like to think that there’s a thick pile of them building up, like a fluid cork carpet. So you feel inebriated trying to walk in the cellar, before you’ve even touched a drop.
