I work for a utility locate company as a utility locator. One of the utility companies we locate for lists on their digital prints “core extraction” as a property for some fiber optic cable lines. I was curious what this meant, and nobody seemed sure, so I searched on google. This video from many years ago is one of the only I could find regarding this technique, and it is useful to know. Thanks for uploading.

Hi, what a great idea. I have a question what travels down the fibre is it data/Internet/telephone, or is it the RF signal that has been sent from the central office?.

A laser is used to send data down the fiber sor single mode which is used for long distances.
@allantinker68384 жыл бұрын
Fiber just transports data via a laser. Think like Morse Code, but like really fast and (most times) light waves you cant see. Were talking like 1550 nm. It depends what devices are on either side of the fiber optics that decides whats going to transport it. In my case, I use switches, and transport internet. Just like a really long Cat5 Cable. Its just Ethernet. The phone service I provide is IP based, and the TV streams are also UDP IP streams. So all I have to do is trunk a few VLANs to separate everything. In some cases, ISPs even offer fiber optics in the home, not just to the node.

What happens if the coax shield is deteriorated? I bet this company ends up digging quite a bit.

I don’t think they are in business anymore. Their website is a static page that has links to gambling websites and I can’t find their company on LinkedIn. Probably too good to be true.
