To everyone wondering why their layers might not seperate: A general rule of thumb is higher alcohol % float better. So you need a blue curacao that's got a lower abv than hypnotiq (17%). Bols, the most common blue curacao is 21%. So that's why your hypnotiq is sinking. If you notice in the video he's using his own blend of curacao.

Is there a similarly-blue substitute for hypnotiq with an abv of between 24% to 40%? Alternatively I suppose diluting blue curacao with blue curacao syrup should work?

I found the solution! I couldn't get the Blue Curacao to NOT mix with the Hypnotiq, but this works - I used a syringe to put the Hypnotiq onto the Blue Curacao. No, not a shoot up kind, I had some bigger ones for applying glue. What was happening was that even with a spoon to slow down the flow when pouring it into the shot glass, it still had too much velocity and would run straight to the bottom, and thus mixing with the Blue Curacao. However, when I used an oversized syringe (no needle, just the plastic opening), I was able to gently put the Hypnotiq on the Blue Curacao and ended up with the layering. I also used my syringe to add Tequila on top (we like Don Julio shots!) and we had extremely pretty drinks with the 3 layers. Try it, it does work!

Tried making it. The hypnotiq layered under the blue curacao and the coconut rum sort of mixed with the blue curacao. Still looked pretty cool but not quite the desired effect. I'm guessing it had to do with the viscosity of the brand of blue curacao I'm using (dekuyper). Unless you used syrup instead of the liqueur?

I tried this but it doesn't layer as easy as the video. The rum layered fine, but the hypnotiq just sank into the blue curaçao. You would tell us if we needed those EXACT shot glasses, wouldn't you? The ones I used are the same size but don't have that round bottom inside.

Mix your blue curaçao with some simple syrup. The drink does not taste bad with it either. You need a sugar bottom so the hypnotic can layer on top. Then use a higher alcohol content rum or vodka on top.

I prefer the old format as a straight female because the interactions are humorous and interesting to me. It's almost like a half-assed vlog style. These videos are okay as well just for the sake of the recipe, but now instead of watching all of them, I only watch the drinks I want to make because it's boring.
