Ian Paice on drums apparently does not read music. He told the story of Deep Purple Group and orchestra recording and when the orchestra conductor was concerned about how he would know when to come in with the drums at the right time in the piece. Ian told him he would know when. The conductor was very skeptical. In the orchestral piece Ian comes in with deadly force and accuracy exactly when he was supposed to. So that long no drumming space in Burn is just another reason reason why the individual elements, when combined, produce a total effect that is greater than the sum of the individual parts. I think Ian is a huge contributor to the Purple phenomena.

So glad you done this , this would have to be my all time favourite Deep Purple song . The vocal arrangements are sublime they are such awesome singers. I love the way you break it all down and point out the things that are happening with the vocals and instruments, its stuff that you don’t realise what is really going on no matter how many times you listen to a song. Im a drummer and have listened to so much music but you have shown me so many things that I had no idea of what was happening. Keep them coming mate , love your work Ken Cheers from down under 🇦🇺

That “phasing” sound when Glenn is singing “Tiiiiiiimmmee” is a studio effect, I’ve listened to the song 100 times :) but when they do it live instead of holding the note, David would scream “time” and go “Aow! aow! aow!”

2:18. You’re pointing to the reason why the singer is flat on some notes. That’s a revelation for me. Now I know why I’m often flat. People were telling me to do scales and also produce a sound and try to hit that note. Not sure if these would help, but I know I need to do something differently.
@kentamplin3 жыл бұрын

Another revelation thanks to you. You’ve mentioned in several videos that one should not bring the heavy vocal weight into his singing, but to keep it small close or in the face. I realized last night how much it’s true. I wrote what I think is a nice song, but couldn’t sing right at all. Been trying for 3 weeks and was about to give up. A lot of straining, lack of clarity, flat notes, etc. Singing Fire and Rain is much easier because I can use more my speaking. Anyway, I can now sing my song much easier by making it small and not bring that throat weight. Thank you!

As you age changes occur as muscles, tissue in the larynx and vocal cords shrink, thin, and stiffen. Add to that damage from poor technique and you have big problems.

Otis Redding and Sam and Dave were Stax records out of Memphis, which specialized in grittier Southern soul vs. Motown's more pop-oriented sound (Supremes, Miracles, Temps). Stax had a distribution deal with the larger Atlantic records out of New York. Wilson Pickett and Aretha Franklin were on Atlantic Records but their recordings in that era are more in the Southen-soul style.

Well ,as drummer first, arranger too , the non drummers you think its trrraapch trroooo Fills and stuff . You hear that . Actually here , there s a phrasing and a reacting. In fact , its mainly Single strokes ( LRLR ..) , double strokes ( LL RR LL RR ...) and parradidles combinaison ( LRLLRLRRL fingering ....in Paice case ) into the kit , but in the metric , by subvisions of notes and Not playing 100 miles an hour , and in the swing , while orchestrating with the guitars chords and bass with syncopation and cymbals I explain like its simple but indeed its not to get harmonious . But its not that " fast fills all over the place " you might think at first .

Great tutorial - I wish I had known that when I was lead singing age 16-24 of this kind of stuff. Would have saved a lot of wear and tear and nodes though I never got them cos I would just rest when they were raw. Love this song and this album I always thought Coverdale while awesome seemed to have 2 tricks in his bag , this type of song and ballads. Also your lesson helps explains what I learned the hard way , and explains why the great Robert plant. Elton john, etc lost their high ranges - in contrast with Don Henley , Mickey Thomas, Glenn Hughes who still maintain their range for the most part well into their 70s. They must have good vocal coaches like you ken ;) IMHO Glenn Hughes is what puts this song over the top and check out his live band anniversary tours versions of these songs still very close to what he did then

The flat thing i think its like a street declaming thing Also don't forget its his first studio experience . By the tour and stormbringer hes really more relaxed and find his marks . His existant range increasing also . By Come taste the band it was almost already whitesnake in the way he sang , confident . The support and range on that album are insane .. Its like Dio., its sounds so thick but its high as fuck in certain stuff . Like Love child . The attack the second verse of Lady luck . Its really heavy too . And the depth , like Dealer
