When Satriani's took up Purples offer to play, he had about a week± to go over their songs from.....cassettes! Some with Blackmore's playing some without. Incredible pressure and he pulled it off and excelled. So add that to what he accomplished here. I believe he was under some contract with his record lable that he couldn't join Purple permanently.

Not only can you hear what Satriani brought to this brief era of Purple that enhanced Lord Paice and Glover as players, but very obvious that Gillan said to himself "I better be fit and cut down the drinks and smokes. We got Satriani playing with us.!"

for a band that has released many live records, it's a shame there wasn't one from their time with Joe (or even a decent video). Thank god for these bootleggers :)
@Javier-qk7ms

I agree. I guess the reason was simply Joe was just a replacement for the tour and the disc company had already spent the money to produce a video for the same tour while RB was still with them.
@xlash05
@xlash05 2 жыл бұрын
@@Javier-qk7ms probably yes, but it's a pity because this concert is a championship. Joe is between Ritchie and Steve in his style, plus he has a masterful technique. Feel that the whole team is happy and harmonious, with great fresh energy. They are just glad that such a protracted internal conflict has disappeared for a while and they can finally breathe and play normally.

Been looking for Satch playing with Purple for ages! Damn! This is great! Even better than I thought. I saw DP on this Battle Rages on tour. When I booked it Ritchie was still the lead, then Satriani filled in for him, but by the time they got to South Africa it was Steve Morse. I knew Morse as a brilliant guitarist from the Dixie Dreggs and still love his music to this day. But If Satriani had stayed with Purple who knows how they would have soared together, who knows what music they would have created. It’s an alternate universe. Wish I’d seen the Purple Satch! Thanks for putting it up and the effort in editing and stabilising this (probably amateur) video. Magic!

You can't compare apples to oranges. Joe Satriani is an accomplished guitar player and a fine musician. One may like his style or not, but this never makes him better or worse than another. Same goes for Steve Morse too. Also never forget, Satriani was just a temporary replacement when Blackmore left the band in the middle of a tour, and I think he did a fine job in that. The kind of unprofessional and spoilt behavior that Blackmore had, have always shadowed his musicianship.

I hate Morse whistle guitar sound Satriani would be better choice - f*ck all the contracts and legislations...it hurts rock :(

Satriani is even better than Blackmore here. He is so great. I wished they had gotten him out of his contract and gone with him. He hot the edge and power DP need from a guitar player.

La garra que le ponía Satriani a los temas, a la viola y a la banda, le puso más huevos y corazon que el mismisimo Blackmore, gracias RB por haberte de la banda favorita de toda mi vida.

Satriani's groove and feel is awesome for this band. Hes just too good. Glad he didnt stick around with this band though, or we would have missed out on alot of his solo work.
