Deep Purple - Soldier of Fortune (Cold Mountain 2003)

An unsettling love story set to a haunting yet beautiful rock ballad: Soldier of Fortune by Deep Purple. This music video features clips / scenes from the film Cold Mountain.
The song was written by David Coverdale and Ritchie Blackmore and was originally released on Deep Purple's 1974 album Stormbringer, It has become one of their most listened to song.
Cold Mountain is a 2003 movie on the final days of the Civil War. It tells the story of a wounded Confederate army deserter (Jude Law) making his way home to meet the love of his life (Nicole Kidman). Renée Zellweger (not in the clips) won the Academy Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her performance as Ruby Thewes.

This original version is awesome for sure. Amazing that it's become the most requested song of the Mark 3 Deep Purple line up. I would've thought that Burn, Stormbringer or Mistreated would be more popular. However, Take a listen to the Blackmore's Night version on the live double CD Past Times with Good Company. It's mostly acoustic and Candace Night sings this version. It takes on a different texture and a whole new meaning when a woman sings it particularly as well as she does!
