It’s more about the tedium that comes with it. Escort Duty is a great mission until it gets extremely repetitive (even more than the rest of the game, especially with the long mission playtime), and the fact it’s forced on 90% of assignments. It gets tiring.

People tend to drag ass on refueling since it is the least fun part. Sometimes refueling takes forever even with people trying due to cave gen. I’ve found from experience that for whatever reason escort missions have a tendency of being extremely low nitra relative to other mission types (only 2-3 resups on haz 5 at times). The end event can take a long time and is the exact same format every time. Having to wait for dotty takes forever. I don’t mind escort but those are some of my criticisms from 600 hrs.

Tip for solo players, you can command bosco to mine the tip of the crystals or use the rockets to mine them from far away, unless you got the ice rockets You can also command bosco to roam around doretta instead of following you, it will make it easier to deal with sneaky enemies while you deal with the rocks or the crystals

One thing to help with stage 2, the drillers drills can drill right through the boulders when they're thrown at Doretta. No damage is done to you either. Just like drilling through spitballer projectiles.

Not related to the hearthstone specifically, but I almost never see anyone mention it: as driller mine a tunnel from the back of dotty to the tip on any of the stages where you're getting fuel, then c4 at either end and use drills to clean up the hole. Dotty doesn't adhere to gravity, so creating a trench under her prevents bugs from even attacking her on these phases outside of mactera. Saves your engie turret ammo (and everyone else ammo too)

Bro those missions are my favorite. They're so easy. I can just solo with engineer and save they're head on the way out. Plus sometimes you can get BET-C on the way to the heartstone. Also, it's way more simple than the mission where you have to put down pipes for liquid morkite.

Also a friendly tip for the laser crystal. It takes 4 pickaxe hit or 3 with a power axe hit. if you hit it in the mid section. Bottom of the crystal will take 6 or 5 with a power axe hit. the tip 2 or 1 power attack. I always go for mid whenever I'm near one or rushing to one. Because 3 to 4 hits is quick enough for me to go fpr the next laser crystal.

The most basic tip I can give for the pillars is that you shouldn't break the base unless you're driller. Driller can just delete the base instantly with his drills, but if you're using your pickaxe, aim upwards. Pickaxing the base of the pillar will take 3-4 breaks (6-8 swings) but if you look up you can reliably destroy the pillar in just 2 breaks (4 swings). Since the only bit that needs to be broken is the very tip, you can do a lot of things. Gunner is especially good solo since he can ranged hit the tips and destroy them. Scout doesn't need an engi platform if he has his skullcrusher active, just zip up and hit it midair with a power swing and youll deatrpy the pillar instantly. If scout can land on top of the pillar that also disregards any need for an engi platform. Sometimes you'll get like 3 pillars that all pop up really close together, that's really fun for driller to just throw his c4 and get a fun and useful explosion. Engi can always provide value to the defense with his turrets so if he's the one who splits off to break pillars he's still got a gun or two in the fight, unlike the other three where if they focus on pillars then they remove themselves from the fight momentarily.

During the second phase, it's usually best to have Driller focus bugs while the rest of the team focuses rocks, as they generally have better single-target damage, gunner especially. Minigun makes for a good choice on escort duty due to such. Pairs well with coilgun for chaff clearing.

AoE and continuous damage weapons are very good on escort missions as you're generally fighting huge swarms than many elite enemies. Sticky flames, magma shard diffractor, sludge pump, mine layer are great options. Nukes and neurotoxin nades also completely fill the Doretta tunnel for effectively dealing with the swarm for a duration.

Btw, for those of you who struggle with the floating rocks, use the gunners Plasma Burster missiles overcloak with basically any configuration and they one-shot the rocks. Depending on your mod selection, one missile can destroy 3-5 rocks alone

Also, if you get a bulk, find out who has aggro asap, bait it away, slow it down, then kill it. You do NOT want it blowing up near doretta. A minigun-gunner can usually manage to deal with the second phase rocks, and due to inconsistencies, I wouldn't rely on platform blocking. I've seen people lose a segment b/c it blocked line of sight at a bad time and the rocks still damaged.

A friendly tip from a greybeard: You can actually save on ammo for stages 2 and 4, just kill the bugs. You can do this by putting 1 dwarf at either sides of where doretta's oil canisters are, and if you position yourself correctly you can technically take zero damage while repairing doretta. The repair speed is faster than the rocks, and can tank quite a few beamers. Only problem is when a bulk shows, up, your team has to deal with the bulk detonator.

I like escort missions tbh, especially as scout where you take mental notes of important resources you see on the way to the core to go back for while your team refuels. Any good reason to justify going off on your own as scout is good enough for me, and in Haz 5 I just feel like a badass when I risk my neck and manage to grab my team those much needed nitra veins. There's a lot more reasons why I like it, but as a scout main those are just one of my favorites.

additional tips, for the floating rocks, use plasma burster missiles on the gunner's hurricane missile launcher, it instantly deletes the rocks. for the crystal beamers, only the tip needs to be broken off for the lasers to stop. other ways include any gunner primary (they destroy terrain), drillers breaking the base (honestly probably the worse option) or alternatively using thin containment field on the EPC to remove the tips (needs good timing), or finally, using the engineer's grenade launcher to blast them off, my personal preferred method.

They recently added a new phase that can be put in place of the flying rock phase and its the force field phase. During this phase if you see a beam/stream or rocks targeting you, get away from Doretta, a shield will be forced around you that you need to dig out of and if Doretta is near this shield it will do massive damage to her and likely deplete a health bar instantly.

the strat my group uses for the beam shard things is have driller focus one side and place satchel charges in a key spot on the other side. have a callout for when to detonate the charge to break some beamers and drill to brake the ones on your side replace charges after you blow them up repeat until its done

Simple solution: bring Plasma Bees. Plasma burster missiles, aside from just being the most fun OC for the Hurricane as is, make it even more broken for this fight than it already would be. Plasma missiles, for some reason, do stupid damage to the floating rocks andyou can send up a small swarm of them to be ready the moment the next rock spawns to take care of them easily. But on top of that, the Hurricane also just shreds the laser pillars of the last phase, meaning no need to go mine those either. It would probably be the gunners best primary for this fight even without the rocks being allergic to plasma bees, so use it!

Rocks are the easiest thing out of all of them if you have an engineer. Unless it’s a deep dive on anything other than stage 3 then you have all your spare nitra to use. If you have 2 then Engi gets around 12 platforms each, use like 8-10 of those for the ceiling making the main layer 2 platforms wide and a layer on center of the bottom or top to give it some more umph. Dorretta will be fine as long as you don’t get unlucky and all the rocks hit the same spot. Engi is best for Escort no competition honestly.
