Deep-sea Rays in the Tonga Trench

We don’t see too many rays at our depths, so we get pretty excited when we do!
This genus of ray 𝘉𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘺𝘳𝘢𝘫𝘢 has over 50 species, and many have adapted to life in the deep ….venturing down to 3000m.
The flatness of rays helps them feed efficiently by allowing them to stay close to the seabed, while their coloration improves their ability to remain hidden, both from potential prey and predators, increasing their chances of successful feeding.
