Hi Teela, thanks for your interesting lessons. The idioms you taught us today can be very useful in everyday conversations. I'll try to put them properly in a short story about yesterday afternoon. Let me start. I am a person who would go the whole nine yards to keep my promises. The day before yesterday I promised a friend of mine to meet up the next day. We met up yesterday in the afternoon, but the same day in the morning I told her that I have to postpone our chit-chat afternoon party because I have to sort something out at home. She was very disappointed because she had just arrived from a holiday and wanted to share her impressions with me. In the end I admitted that I was pulling her leg and in the afternoon we went to a cafe. While we were sipping espresso, she was talking about her impressions of Thailand. I felt she exaggerated a bit, but I turned my blind eye on that. Also, there was a guy sitting at the table next to ours who rubbed me the wrong way. All the time he was pretending to read newspapers, actually he was listening to our conversation. Due to that I became so quiet and at one moment my friend asked me if the cat had my tongue. I gesticulated her with my eyes showing that guy and soon after that we left the cafe.

It's amazing some similarity with some idiom. for example in Brazil if somebody is quit we say "has the cat ate your tongue". Pretty similar to "HAS THE CAT HAS YOUR TONGUE".
@Onahti0075 жыл бұрын
This was very useful, thank you. The idioms are good way to practice English. For example when I'm reading or listening something in English and find the unknown word I'm writing down the whole phrase, not just that unknown word. It's easier to remember new words.

Hi everyone. Teela, thank you very much for so clear explening🤗 In Russion we have similar idioms. For example To turn a blind eye = close someone`s eyes at something I close my eyes at your lateness, because you are a valued employee or Does the cat have your tongue?=Did you swallow your tongue? 😄😄😄

Hi, I like your speaking style and it's motivated me to speak in English with colleagues. And yes my boss always turns his eyes blind when he was wrong. He pretends like he didn't know about this and try to change the topic. In this society, everyone tries to degrade the other due to jealousy.

The only idiom that had been unfamiliar to me, before this idiom session, was " to pull sb's leg". Apart from that, the others are very common, thank you Tylla , we're very appreciative for your efforts. -there is another idiom approximate in meaning to" to turn a blind eye to sth ", namely " to turn a deaf ear" -regarding this one" Did a cat have your tongue", I hear native people mostly use "got" instead of "have". Is it better ?

It rubs me the wrong way to know that my boss always turns the blind eye at every Peter's inappropriate actions. Peter is my boss's son and my coworker. He's very immature and has a blast pulling our colleague's legs when they are giving their whole nine yards to get their work done in time. The other day he pulled my leg by telling me that he had heard the HR supervisor was thinking about firing some people and that he was including me in. I didn't give a flying fig about what he said. I knew it was one of his bad jokes.Then he looked at me and said: "hey, what's the matter with you? Has the cat got your tongue? Aren't you gonna say anything?" I was torn by anger and pity, but then I said: "if you continue acting like a moron I'm gonna let the cat out of the box by telling your father what you did to the trainees and I am sure he's not gonna turn the blind eye at your behavior this time.
