A week ago, I interviewed John Hathaway for Mike Maloney’s GoldSilver KZbin channel.
John is a legend in the hard asset investment world.
And he shared a number of valuable predictions about where he sees the precious metals headed from here.
So, with Mike’s kind permission, I’m now sharing the interview here with you, on Wealthon.
But enough backstory...
After holding their own in 2022, a horrible year for stocks and bonds, the precious metals -- and the companies that mine them -- are positioned very well to deliver superior results here in 2023.
To learn why, we're extremely fortunate to be joined today by John Hathaway, Sprott Managing Director and one of the most respected precious metals portfolio managers in the industry.

At Wealthion, we show you how to protect and build your wealth by learning from the world’s top experts on finance and money. Each week we add new videos that provide you with access to the foremost specialists in investing, economics, the stock market, real estate and personal finance.
We offer exceptional interviews and explainer videos that dive deep into the trends driving today's markets, the economy, and your own net worth. We give you strategies for financial security, practical answers to questions like “how to grow my investments?”, and effective solutions for wealth building tailored to 'regular' investors just like you.
There’s no doubt that it's a very challenging time right now for the average investor. Above and beyond the recent economic impacts of COVID, the new era of record low interest rates, runaway US debt and US deficits, and trillions of dollars in monetary and fiscal stimulus stimulus has changed the rules of investing by dangerously distorting the Dow index, the S&P 500, and nearly all other asset prices. Can prices keep rising, or is there a painful reckoning ahead?
Let us help you prepare your portfolio just in case the future brings one or more of the following: inflation, deflation, a bull market, a bear market, a market correction, a stock market crash, a real estate bubble, a real estate crash, an economic boom, a recession, a depression, or another global financial crisis.
Put the wisdom from the money & markets experts we feature on Wealthion into action by scheduling a free consultation with Wealthion’s endorsed financial advisors, who will work with you to determine the right next steps for you to take in building your wealth.

In light of the impending recession and the fact that inflation is still far higher than the Fed's 2% target, several of the most prominent market analysts have been expressing their views on how terrible they believe the next downturn will be and how far stocks may have to fall. I need advice on what investments to make because I'm attempting to create a portfolio for my children that will at least be $850k in value.

I've been talking to a coach or a long now, mostly because I lack the knowledge and energy to deal with these ongoing market circumstances. I made more than $220K during this slump, demonstrating that there are more aspects of the market than the average individual is aware of. Having an investing counselor is now the best line of action, especially for those who are close to retiring.

Everything smells like an economic collapse and recession. The good news is that people are starting to realize that cash/fiat is pretty much stone age at this point and is designed to fail eventually. Here are three of the BEST and surprisingly simple ways to double or keep your funds in this economy. Who can guess the third? Physical silver, gold.

in the UK I bought gold via SGLN a £ LON listed ETF but found that instead of betting on gold performance the influence was more about cable i.e $£ FX rate. The ETF is £ but the underlying asset is gold in $. When the $ falls the price of gold in $ increases but this gain always seems to be netted off against the loss of the FX from the same $ fall against £. How do I get gold exposure in the UK which is FX hedged. Is there a GOLD ETF when the gold is dependent on the price of gold in £ / ounce ?

I wanted an inflation hedge and after checking around I find that the round trip cost to convert dollars to gold and back to dollars when needed can be from 11 percent to 15 or 16 percent. Remember to add in shipping and insurance costs if buying online and in some cases local coin shops charge sales tax which adds even more. That means today if I buy gold it will have to appreciate approx $225 to $265 just for me to break even ! That means instantly after the transaction to buy gold I lose 11 to 15 percent. I cannot rationalize how this is a good investment unless I think the dollar is going to drop to near zero which I dont thing it will completely collapse.

I see 2-3yrs recession. Fed will raise interests in Sept 2022 if inflation doesn't peak. Inflation is producing a slew of problems throughout the world, including food shortages, diesel and heating fuel shortages, and housing prices and financial market crash. This global collapse might end up being a part of us for a very long time. With inflation currently at about 9%, my primary concern is how to maximize my savings/retirement fund of about $300k which has been sitting duck since forever with zero to no gains.

Please Adam dive a bit deeper on the same old assumptions presented. For example, if the music ever stopped in the derivative market and most traders loose out, doesn’t that mean their ‘gold’ stocks plummet and those traders exit at a loss. Sure people will scramble for physical but will they pay extra for what they think they already own - or took the risk knowing they didn’t. The argument then goes that it only takes a small percentage increase in physical buying to dramatically increase price and a breakdown of paper gold would do that in spades. But if central banks are buying up in the thousands of tonnes of physical, more than in decades, how is that not the type of increase that would send prices skyrocketing already? Lastly, if the east ever move to settle trade in gold, it’s not really in their best interest (producers anyway) for gold to go too high? The whole point is price stability (and trust) so wouldn’t whatever price was set at the time then basically go sideways from then on? No one mentions a potential sell-off of gold for liquidity in the next crises or rescission; why not? Seems disingenuous given it’s likelihood. Thx!!

Well, our monetary system and financial markets are a giant house of cards, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that it will collapse. It has managed to avoid collapse thus far. But if our system collapses, it’s not that gold will rise, it just won’t crash along with everything else. If you price your car or house in gold instead of dollars, I think it will generally stay roughly the same through the turmoil.

I agree that things of value will continue to hold value, like PM's, food, land, fuel, etc. That "value" may be interpreted against the main score card we have... The US Dollar. The maximum Fed funds rate that the US economy can cope with is currently at most about 2%. This implies that the US economy will contract at the current or higher Fed funds rate. At some point this economic contraction will become politically unsustainable, so then the Fed will pivot and return to Zirp. The US government will respond to the recession with fiscal stimulus which will result in higher CPI values. The return to Zirp combined with QE is likely to also cause asset price inflation. Like in the 1970s this process will probably repeat until a crisis causes it to end.

1st he said, the Fed will pivot and go back to normal...then he said, there is no back to normal because the FED can't afford a Rezession. So, what is he talking about?

I thought I heard Powell say early last year that he was planning a fed rate of 5.6. I have better to do than scan previous transcripts, yet this is what I recall him saying.

Btw, IF the price of Gold soars, The US government has the authority to seize gold under several statutes, including the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), the Trading with the Enemy Act (TWEA), and the USA PATRIOT Act. These laws allow the government to freeze or seize assets, including gold, in the event of a national emergency..... and the US Govt HAS done this before.😞

Yet nobody talks about this. You'd simply have to either to wait it out until the policy changes, which could be years or leave the country. But good luck getting that gold through the airport. This is the advantage of Bitcoin, it's ultra-portable and unconfiscatible.

Ho hum. Black Swans etc. Same old stuff. Been hearing this stuff for almost 20 years. Every time the metals go up, SUDDENLY OUT OF THE BLUE, they drop precariously. Its too manipulated. You cant beat city hall !!!

Did you fellas actually read Nassim Taleb's book? I can't imagine you did, because a "black swan" is, BY DEFINITION, a shock to the system that is / was unforeseeable. We can ponder what the next "shoes" are to drop." We can't see a black swan coming. So what, you might say. The rigorous use of language is important here. If you conflate a black swan with foreseeable events, you miss Taleb's essential point ... that the stuff that smacks you the worst is the stuff you simply CAN'T see coming . And those "fat tail" events happen a helluva lot more often that the Wall Street "Gaussian" bell curve models predict. This is how you get multiple events occurring in a matter of years that the model would have told you had a virtually zero probability of occurring. It's the height of arrogance for Wall Street, and pundits generally, to presume we can identify the most deadly threats to the system. Bottom line: A black swan can completely devastate you and you'll never see it coming. Prepare accordingly.

I believe gold and silver is simply manipulated by the paper market. Regulators complicit. Eventually will get beyond the ability to be manipulated.

Don't agree. Gold will continue to be manipulated downward. When the market finally breaks down, PM prices and PM stocks will go with it. I'm waiting very patiently for that to happen.
