The opening is absolutely genius, I love this slightly melancholic menace in the tone that culminates in pure unexpected ecstasy. It's slightly mad and erratic, but in a good way. What a brilliant marvel of a symphony.

Paavo Jarvi makes one of the most underrated Beethoven symphonies astonishing.
@richardamey39324 жыл бұрын
Yes, it's all the other conductors who have been underrating it. If you'd just completed the Eroica and were now composing the fifth, you'd be feeling this confident, brusque, imposing, angelic and able to do and say anything - including throwing in some jokes. Paavo's right in there, 'getting it'. Hear how the audience had connected with it.

How can a man compose such a thing and the Ninth ? Both are masterpieces, but in so different modes... It's just incredible. What can of human being Beethoven really was ?
@johnries55938 жыл бұрын
He is frequently described as a genius, and I think the characterization is correct (combined with a willingness to take risks instead of sticking with "tried and true"). The stories told about him certainly suggest that he was alarmingly intelligent. But even lesser musicians can and do experiment with a variety of different sounds. I'm guessing that just as the Beatles' constantly changing sound kept their fans interested; Beethoven's variety kept people going to his concerts, thus helping to maintain his status as Vienna's most popular composer (as well as its greatest) for most of his musical career.

Beethoven's one of my top 5, but his symphonies are so ubiquitous. It"s easy to hear his music, but not listen with fresh ears. I prefer chamber orchestras, because the strings don't overpower the other sections. You can hear the brilliant things Beethoven does with the other instruments. In short, a great performance!
@theodentherenewed47854 жыл бұрын
That's a very interesting remark. I have mostly listened to the symphony orchestras, so I'd say I actually like the string sections owning the floor. That's the 1st thing that I thought hearing this recording - violins don't dominate as I'd expect. It's a matter of what you mostly listen to I think.

It's playing this music with this conductor the players are enjoying! Nobody's posing. But let's hear it for the camera and vision mixing people. They've conveyed so much of the executional effort as well as the drama, fizz and playfulness in the score. The fact Jarvi and Beethoven nearly leave them behind in their wake seems to make it that more electrifying to watch.
