I'm 77 years old with a bad back. I have tubs that had minerals in them. Because I can't bend down, I used bricks up on end with 2X6 boards on them as a table to hold the tubs. I also have 3 and 5 gallon buckets. Although I'm still having trouble, I'm not going to give up as long as God gives me life.

@ lauraking3304: I will be 85 in August, and have had to go to gardening in containers for the first time this year. I have 16 of the 17 gallon mineral tubs. I used up ended concrete blocks with 2X10 boards to make a platform so that I would not have to bend over, The tubs have done well, despite extremely high pest pressures this year.

I’m with you! 60’s but I’ve over extended a tendon in my low back and I had made gardening tricky the last 3 weeks. I’ve learned to go along on my knees, not crawling on hands & knees as that position is too painful to get out of), to use a step stool that I pull down the row, and to straighten up & walk a bit to make sure I still can! 😂 I’m not quitting and I hope I’m still going at 77!❤

This chat is perfect timing for me. I'm in Australia on a coastal area with high humidity. Our gov warned us yrs ago about unprecedented never befor experienced heat coming our way this summer. We are just starting our winter here but it's not that cold just a few nippy mornings. Thankyou for your advice it will help me so much.

Also don't buy Dillo-Dirt or Milorganite. Dillo-Dirt is bio-sludge sewer waste from Austin. Milorganite is the same thing from Milwaukee. Mike Adams, Health Ranger, did a documentary on this called Bio--Sludged. Eye opening.

My garden is a scattering of companion plants, I left the leaves on the ground this year and tilled where I planted only and no weeds . Everyday I was out in the morning checking for bugs and took care of it. Used liquid fertilizer around the plants roots. This was my best year ever! Thanks to Danny and Wanda and everyone on Freesteading who helped me answer questions. Praise God!

We filled our garden, buckets and tanks with Fall leaves and covered the soil with tarps last year. When we uncovered them in the Spring the soil had turned to rich black gold.

First of all am I the only one that sees this... But Danny finishes Wanda sentences and vice a versal Miss Wanda finishes Danny's sentences... That is just so stinking adorable! Love watching y'all very inspirational while I was listening to y'all I was watering all my Gardens. Finally pulled the last of the pumpkins I was able to harvest 16 pumpkins although 11 bad on the ground from pests and another one fell from the vine prematurely... and there were probably five or six very small ones attached to the vines when I got rid of the vines. But the vines looks really rough and they were dying and disease so it was time to remove them clear the area and prep it for something different. We're in Texas and it's blooming hot over here as well. Just a few weeks ago I sowed some TrumboSino and I've never planted that before so I was able to get for plants, but one had to be pulled and now I see that the trouble seeing those are aggressive broilers LOL so we shall see if I have to go ahead and removed another one or two but they're all growing good so I decided just to leave them there. I also have some Boston Merrell but they absolutely hate this Texas Heat. Also planted yellow wax beans and Boston Pickler pickles or pickling pickles and they are absolutely getting out of control LOL I planted for plants and they're doing so good that I made my very first ginormous batch of pickles just two days ago and I just made the easy refrigerator brine. What would you guys recommend besides okra? I do plan on growing okra because all saffron flowers have given up their petals and they're all dried for collecting so those two giant raised beds will be available for something new. But it's getting to the point where it's getting so hot you don't even want to be out there and you're right it's very hard to breathe

Danny, I got a junkyard of supplies for my gardens, piles of different composted soils, mulch,old EMT pipes for stakes or posts. Wood mulch, grass clippings. We have acres of virgin woods dirt as well as a sawmill that's been piling up wood chips for 10 to 20 years that we call black gold. Anything that I can find for gardening that's free, recycled, or other folks trash. Like you said, it doesn't have to be pretty, just has to work.....Take care from the Appalachians and your brother in Christ!!!!

If you want a Greenstalk but don't want to spend the money, Dollar Tree has the same shaped pots that are stackable, and when you make a hole big enough to stick a metal rod down through all of them and down into the soil, it is quite sturdy and works just like a Greenstalk! 👌 (Maybe add a few more drainage holes in the pots, too, as they don't come with any!)

We use mineral tubs for potatoes. We cut the bottom out and set in on top of the fresh tilled soil and plant the seed potatoes in the bottom so as the grow up, fill it with soil until the vines are coming out of the top. When they’re done growing just tip over the tub and shake out the soil and taters. It’s been working great for us every year!

Yup we have that high humidity here in S.E. Alabama too. It's so humid you can LITTERALLY lather up with a bar of soap in 5 minutes being out in it.

"Gardening doesn't need to be fancy", very good quote! ... Tillage works if you have access to fertilizer and chemicals because you can replace soil biology effects. With concerns and uncertainty about long term availability of fuel (for tillage) and fertilizer/chemical supplies: I used winter rye (early spring oats work too) and then plant garden and corn/beans into the standing rye. When the main crop emerges I terminated the rye by flattening it (stomping on a piece of angle iron with ropes tied to the ends to lift, or lawn roller both ways, or roller-crimper machinery). ... Rye drowns out weeds when growing as well as when flat, shades the soil from rain compaction (big problem on clay) while standing and laying flat, plus gives 'in-place compost' soil amendments when the tops and roots are breaking down ... Where I grew rye and disked it down before planting (only getting compost benefits but part of the experiment) I have weeds like any other year. Unusual but telling extreme comparison: we had five to six weeks of no rain right after planting and the standing rye side got crops through, the bare disked soil has not -- which made a believer of me for doing this again. ... Some work Dr Christine Jones did in New Zealand with multi-species cover crops (targeting four functional groups with eight or more species) built soil on volcanic sand in five months -- which follows the typical 'three sisters' regime where the nitrogen from the beans helps build soil for the next season while squash drowns out weeds all summer. ... So I have a long test band of buckwheat, sunflower, daikon radish, corn, and oats around the fields cutting across all the worst soils I have -- to see how that does. Last year I had positive results from a buckwheat and radish mix (weed cutter, phosphorous miner, and beneficial insect attraction). ...I've started looking at Fukuoka gardening using clay ball wrapped seeds to scatter, something elderly gardeners can do since that's what we all are eventually headed to, and build a little bucket tumbler. .. So Danny, set aside some garden areas where you run them as if the grid stays down and there is no gasoline, that would be helpful for many folks. You're helping many with your current content but covering possible scenarios if we experience the activities going on in the wider world and near outer space could help many too.

I'm trying to do the same - but finding the cost of beef to be challenging, as we're seniors on fixed income. Plus, hubby isn't quite on board, although he's agreed to cut down on his sugar intake. He still likes his rice or potatoes and vegetables, however.

@@Epona52 That is our situation. We are living on SS, and my husband expects his carbs and vegetables. We were fortunate that we were able to raise our own steer last year. We didn't get as much meat if he had been a meat breed instead of a dairy breed. But I still buy reduced meats. I have found that doing this way of eating is cheaper. I have my own chickens so we have plenty of eggs, even though my husband will only eat eggs once a week. I only eat twice/day most times

I've torn up the lawn on both ends of the hosue because that's where the best soil is for growing anything. The lady who sold it to us used to mow the whole place with the bagger, then dump it over into the woods, effectively starving the soil. After 3 years no mowing, the pastures are beginning to come back. I'm across the line from y 'all in Alabama & yes, we've got the same heat but missed out on the rain. It's all I can do to keep things watered now at age 62. I have the electroculture going & growing 50/50 in ground & in containers. Squash ain't making it this year, nor pumpkins, nor watermelons (unless the Blacktail mountain pulls it off). Never in my life have I needed to put shade cloth over my watermelons, but the sun is too strong. Not the same sun I grew up with, either. It's Guerilla Gardening out there, now. I've got jumping worms, but thankfully, the geckos eat them & so does the armadillo who has made himself at home. My sunflowers ended up a catch crop for what I call leaf-footed bugs & y'all call stink bugs. Better them than my beans. Asian long beans seem to do OK & Beauregard sweet potatoes. Mexican sunflower is good, turmeric is OK & my dipper gourds are laughing at the heat. I have bell peppers in container under a tree with leaves 10" long! Eggplant in the same container has 6 at once & blooms, squash in same has 6 squash coming after producing about 10 lbs already. Chaleano chili pepper is covered with chilis & new blooms. Good year for jalapenos. NOT a good year to be a human out under that sun. Even my chickens don't do it.

The heat and cold snaps messed us up this season so playing catch-up on the garden. We went and our peaches are doing good. Blue berry bushes have preformed well this year we did good last year this year was crazy.

In central Alabama, zone 8, I know exactly what you are talking about. 107 heat index yesterday. I have a caterpillar tunnel with a 50% shade cloth. The sides are up and have a fan going. So far tomatoes and cucumbers are doing well. I grew them in 5 gallon grow bags up strings and prune the bottom leaves. Works great. I have my regular garden covered with a tarp to keep the weeds down. Had a knee injury and did not grow any corn.

Hello Danny and Wanda. I appreciate you sharing what your growing and about your weather. I have a shorter growing season here in Iowa although can plant some crops in the fall and still harvest in winter or spring time. Things like garlic and carrots seem to hold their own in the soil. I started a lot inside and now have planted a lot outdoors and will start more inside under lights to grow through the winter. I have one Greenstalk tower and use a lot of buckets and empty cat liter buckets. I can't afford to get a high tunnel but especially when chemtrails are heavy I cover a lot that is growing for a short time. I even cover my elderberries. Electroculture is making a huge difference too. I use a small chicken run I'm currently not using so put some plants in it since has a lid and cover with a tarp during heavy chemtrails. I am very leary of Grazon so do a lot of amending my soil with Oscomite, compost, worm castings, and some of the fertilizer and other things you've mentioned in several videos, etc. The only hay I get is for the chickens and from a trusted Farm store with no Grazon. I even grow clover and chicken forage rather than buy a lot of extras besides some food for them. Of course the chickens like the weeds I am clearing and grass they can forage too. One has to do all that we can, grow all the food we can and keep it as healthy as possible and Grazon free too. Thank you both for sharing. I always learn so much and realize things I forget at times. Actually lots of times lol Mega blessings to you and keep you both lifted to the Lord for all you endeavor to do and are doing.

Here in south east Louisiana close to Mississippi border. Heat is crazy and supposed to be hotter later this week. Heat index was 110 and supposed to be over 100 degrees without the heat index this week. Go out at 7 pm to start working on the garden now or at dawn and it's still hot. Was 87 at 9pm last night. Our soil will also get like a rock if it's too hot and dry for any length of time. I use a pitchfork for some of my work, and there are times when I can't get it into the ground at all! Until or unless we get rain, I can forget pitchfork, broadfork, shovel - a tiller will break it up , and then the wind will blow the dust around! (We get horrendous dust storms when high winds pick up the soil that's been recently tilled on large farms - enough to reduce visibility to near zero if you're driving through one!)

Its been abnormally cool here in NE Ga but this past week we finally are getting the high temps. A lot of my plants just weren’t growing but the last rain shower and high heat they are growing like crazy again. I did drip irrigation this year and it seems to be the ticket. Last year I couldn’t keep my plants watered because of the dry weather. Thanks for the updates, God bless!

Homestead Heart uses a battery operated neck fan. She says it helps, but battery runs out too fast (couple of hrs) on high, so has to put it on medium to last all day. Said husband got it at Home Depot. Something to look into if you're in a very hot climate

In Rhode Island... 6B I have had tomatoes in the ground in late March/April. This year had to rely on purchased plants and only went into the ground in the last couple of weeks. IT WAS TOO COLD and we flirted with the 30's from late September to late May. Unsure if I will have tomatoes.. it gets up to 100 degrees.. was too dry then the temp plummeted. The flowers are not opening to fertilize. I have not seen anything like this before. Don't know why the potatoes in buckets are going crazy. Of course the first time with electro culture. Thanks for introducing this to me!! It now has been "raining" everyday for 2 months.. also NO SUN. Love you guys!

I will attest to the Walmart totes and garden soil. I have nearly 20 sitting down the length of my driveway. Squash, tomatoes, all kinds of peppers, carrots, cukes, even potatoes. All i can eat and give away...Right at $300 to start and I ammend the soil at the end of the season. Better veggies and more harvest each year. If the weather gets bad I just drag them under the trees and into the garage. No thunderstorm damage...

Morning you two. I am in NC and we are starting the 100degree heat index this week. Have a smaller garden but I have shade cloth on almost all. Everything in my garden has 2 weeks or more before I can harvest. Already harvested my beans 2 times. Crossing my fingers the weather holds out. Might have large hail later today.

here in New England we get a lot of humidity so even though the temps are high 80's and low 90's the humidity is about 60 to 80 % but we can't start planting until May 30th unless you plant snow peas or lettuce, radishes, which you can put in in middle of May.

what suggestions would you give to someone looking to move to a homestead friendly state?. would you suggest Mississippi as a potential state?. thank you for videos. I have a small unfancy garden now that feeds my family for the summer and allows me to can some foods. I started with cucumbers years ago and now grow several fruit trees, grapes and herbs along with my short term veggies. its a great pride to be able to say I grew everything on the plate.

I've been working on a pond and building large raised beds. Ultimately I relocated my old grow area because I replaced tiles. I took a gamble and put out way late. So far it seems to be okay. I'm in Indiana we're still having twenty degree swings day to day. I'm going in with my vining plants today and tomorrow. I can grow till about oct 15.

Live in south eastern Oklahoma this mama gets up way early get chores done early then stay low in hottest time fishing hole time then evening do more chores. Its been over 105 each day for days

I had never heard of a greenstalk until I watched your program. My greenbeans are doing great in mine. I'm in Ohio and our temperatures are cooler than usual. We have been in the low to upper 70s for most of June...I won't complain!!!

Morning, Deep South! I'd definitely agree with some of those gardening fads out there... Rule#1 ... Keep it Simple! There is ONE thing of current interest lately however and that's Biochar... for removal of excesses like Aluminum, which is the elephant in the room in gardening, supposedly Biochar pulls that aluminum OUT of the soil.

100 degrees here around 16h Portugal, yesterday was 104.. humidity around 35% And in the sun it’s around 108 around 10 am already.. Dry heat yes but l don’t want to work in that eighter nor plant or seed anything anymore because like you say, it just wilts away.. l’ve planted a patch under some trees this year as a trial and it’s looking way beter than my old garden in full sun..

I guess we each need to use what is available in our own area. In Ct i use mostly leaves mowed to chop down and stored in short fencing circles. I have gotten our straw use down to one package of Mainley mulch now (just for the finer texture to mulch germinating seeds). Hopefully I'll have enough leaves left to use as leaf mold next season and skip the kiln dry straw. I do mulch everything bc our well isn't very good and I don't want to use up our water on the garden

My neighbor raise gmo alfalfa, it hasn't deterred the weeds much. He's got an acre or so that's got weeds thick in it. I haven't paid attention to the bigger section, but I know they're creeping too. But he rotates with a grain & corn (which is more than likely gmo too) every so often. To find any hay/straw crop that's organic is nearly impossible around here. We're having colder weather this month then normal, crops & animal's are confused. Great video

DANNY AND MS WANDA: The humidity where I live is also very high. When Wanda said, “It takes your breath away” is 100% correct! Years ago when extended family would come to the Bootheel of Missouri (where I live) to visit, all it took was them coming in the summer then to say never again. That they would visit one of the other 3 seasons, and that’s what they did. One family lived in Arizona and was amazed at how much hotter it was here, even though the temperature would be about the same. And man, the high humidity makes one sweat a lot more. I know both of you experience that as well. Since I’m a senior with lung disease I simply have to stay inside for most of the day. You guys have a good day, in spite of the heat.

10 more 27 gallon heavy storage totes from Costco on sale now for $7.99. Same totes on sale at Lowe's r $12.99. Im not afraid of using Miracle grow fertilize etc. I load up when fertilizer on sale at end of season. I look for seeds that r heat tolerant after moving to Texas from Virginia. I have all raised beds and containers. I don't have good soil here, black gumbo clay and im too old to get it workable. My garden is small but very productive.

Good morning. Its our first real garden here. Its been a great harvest so far. But this heat is zapping the rest. This is a whole new experience here! Ive never had a problem with heat til we moved.
