You are doing the right thing with fertilizer. It's about growing food, not fad. They contain the same compounds as organic but are already broken down and ready for consumption by the plant. ps, you are a pro at dropping those potatoes just right, lol.

There are books that are public domain now that show at the turn of the century they used manure and they layed it on in feet in depth. It is fascinating reading talking about proximity to population centers and being able to get their crops to market in good condition. We will need to go back to these references in the not so distant future if we want to have sustainable agriculture in the times ahead. Loved watching the tractor work. I get excited and want to run out and buy some tools, but then I remembered I don't have something you do. DIRT! We have rock and clay... If I want to grow something it has to be done in raised beds or truck in a LOT of "dirt" to cover an area that I want to garden. Raised beds are the only realistic way to do it here. Sure would e nice to have the mechanical advantage. Thanks for sharing.

I love planting chitted potatoes with the huge long chits(runners) they tend to do a lot better harvest wise than the ones I don't get nice long growth. But I love to experiment too.. last year I had a few growing stems get broken off while moving my big buckets (I have scab in the soil so most of my good potatoes are in 4 to 5 gallon buckets) I took those 3 stems and dipped in a bit if root-tone hormone and waited to see if they would root. They rooted so fast that by the end of the first week I had lots of white roots. So I potted them up to see if they would produce potatoes. Now they did and avfew nice sized ones but more small. I'm thinking if I had made cuttings earlier (this was late June or early july) they probably would have made taters just as nice as the original plants. So this year I'm going to start a few cuttings on purpose and plant out the same time as my seed taters and see what happens. I have a few sprouting chits right now so they might be under the grow lights soon. I like trying things that everyone else assures me "just can't be done" lol Beautiful potato bed!

I'm in the third year of a potato experiment. Potatoes evolved in the mid plateaus of the upper semi-arid Andes. I'm trying replicate those conditions as best I can. Planted organic russet potato 3 seasons ago in a large tub. Tried to replicate the soil, lightly adding modified wood ash fertilizer to replicate the volcanic soils washed in every season, letting the soil dry out a bit during the hot drier summer periods. I've had plant growth every year so far, don't know about the tubers since I've not disturbed it. Potatoes used to be a tough plant, humans have babied the plants to increase production, which is good, but have genetically created a weaker plant. Plants can't move like animals, so they either need to adapt to conditions or perish.

Organic requires lots of time and stable ground with minimal till. If you feel you need to till and plow and don’t have access to lots of compost to lay down they don’t work well on their own in my opinion. Also 600 lbs an acre of nitrogen or 600 lbs urea ? Either is more than needed but the former is insane lol! I think commercial AG nowadays targets around 100-200 lbs of Nitrogen (about 200-400 urea or 250-500 AN) depending on residual nitrogen levels.

I have an unfinished crawl space I would like to keep mine in but I am concerned with the humidity, bugs and mice. I thought about putting them in 5 gallon buckets w/ lids to protect them?
@tinnerste25073 жыл бұрын
@@boydchapman5660 id need to know the conditions to help, like temp and humiditx. ive had rats, mice and wood mice steal potatoes in the house . I think they are safer frozen outside. If you put cloth on the buckets instead of lids then they wont mold, but they could dry out. Potatoes need high humidity, so maybe pack them in moist sand in the crawspace? But you also need to check through them to make sure they dont rot, especially if the lid is on. Mine go dry in my kitchen at 70 percent humidity, and i get the odd rodent in my root cellar, so i just dehydrate mine if they start to go soft and leave next years seed potatoes frozen in the ground. I sugest a making a clamp, Just dig a hole outside and bury a trashbin or rainwater barrel that has a secure lid and put some hay ontop. Its probably closer to the ideal temp and you can control the humidity in one go insead of opening a bunch of buckets. Maybe, if your zone 7 or up you could just use an unplugged fridge or freezer left outside.
