বাংলাদেশ থেকে এই মুহূর্তে বিদেশে রপ্তানি করা মৎস্য সম্পদের মধ্যে চিংড়ির পরই সবচেয়ে বেশি সম্ভাবনাময় পণ্য হচ্ছে কাঁকড়া। এর মধ্যে কাঁকড়ার শক্ত খোলসের মধ্যে নরম খোসার কাঁকড়া, যাকে সফটশেল কাঁকড়া বলে তার চাহিদা বিদেশে বাড়ছে বলে জানিয়েছেন সংশ্লিষ্টরা। বাংলাদেশে যেসব জেলায় সফটশেল কাঁকড়া উৎপাদিত হয় তার মধ্যে অন্যতম হচ্ছে সাতক্ষীরা জেলা। তবে বিভিন্ন প্রতিকুল অবস্থার জন্য কাঁকড়া চাষিরা বছরে প্রায় ৭ মাস এই কাঁকড়া চাষ করতে পারে না যার মূল কারন জানুয়ারি ফেব্রুয়ারি এর দিকে মাছের প্রজননের সময়। এই সময়ে মাছ মারা বন্ধ থাকে ফলে মুক্ত জলাশয়ে জেলেরা কাঁকড়ার পোনা সংরক্ষণ করতে পারে না এবং কাঁকড়া উৎপাদনের কোন হ্যাচারির ব্যাবস্থা আমাদের দেশে নেই। আশা করা যায় এই শিল্পকে টিকিয়ে রাখতে সংশ্লিষ্টদের এই বিষয়ে সচেতন হতে হবে।
