Let me just say that I think the reasons that so many bands are compared to Velvet Underground are that 1) The VU was, is, and always will be a seminal force in rock and roll history. It's just an inescapable fact. 2) Therefore, many bands study, idolize, and yes, even imitate and draw upon the VU with clear intent, and there is no shame in that.

How much effort have you actually put into understanding that warrants your gross generalization of "this generation" and "this songwriting"? You want quality of style? Especially art. There's no definitive way to describe what an art piece is. It's a piece of your soul manifested through you using what is available to you as a medium. This is what deerhunter produced at this point in time they found themselves in. If your kid ever gets into self expression of any kind they're in for some hard times with your attitude. Try to not be stale as fuck and you might enjoy what other human beings have created.
