Naw, I can’t enjoy ‘Age Ain’t Nothin’ but a Number’ anymore. That “product” is inextricably tied to R. Kelly’s grooming Aaliyah. He is literally lingering in the background of the album cover! I understand people draw the line of separation in different places, but for me it’s impossible in that case.

Yeah. All of his songs are fine, but that's like his confession tape basically.

Seperating the art from the artist is valid but the stuff that R Kelly does is mixed in with his music. You can still listen to him and not support what he has done but you can´t separate the art from the artist in a situation like that.

Fr but I feel like it depends on the album. Ignition? That's cool. Age ain't nothing but a number? 😐🧍 get out. Now. This instant.

It depends on the song though. R Kelly has spiritual and uplifting songs as well as his sexual ones.

I think that for ME, it depends on the artist and the art itself. In the case of R. Kelly, I cannot separate the two because I know that he was singing about underage girls. Yes that is an emotional response but there's some things I just can't support. As far as boycotting products that is something as a society we need to do to hit these companies in their pockets. They don't care unless it affects their bottom line. I think that's very different from individuals.

The rhetoric or statement of “can” or “can’t” makes it seem as if people that are not WILLING to separate the art from the artist are disabled or completely mentally incapable or even less intelligent than people that rather than people that “can”, are people that are willing, to spectate the art from the artist. You are either willing to ignore the stuff an artist has done or you are not willing to ignore it. It is your decision completely manifested from your free will, the decision doesn’t reside within confides of “you can” or “you cannot”. However, and this is to all ppl; listen or give your energy to whatever you want it’s your decision.

There are levels to it. Disagreeing with someone's lifestyle or opinions is not enough for me to just abandon them as a person. Hurting people (physically and sometimes mentally) is where I draw the line. I would never listen to R Kelly, I never really did from the get go. Trapped in the closet was very funny though lol! Just found out that one of my favorite KZbinrs atm used the N word, and I unsubscribed immediately. Some things I just cannot overlook, ethically.

Separating the art from the artist comes with a sprinkle of idc because it didn’t happen to me. Just the fact of the matter. But i also understand there is a difference in understanding that someone is talented and going out of your way to listen to/purchase their product.

I don't think the victims will be able to enjoy their art An example is you being abused by an actor and it took you awhile to get over it but then you decide to watch a movie not knowing that they had a small cameo in it and it catches you off guard and you have a mental breakdown

I respect Dee's stance in the intro. Though I don't agree that people doing wrong _always_ get their comeuppance eventually, the world would be a better place if that were the case. But anyway, I do try to separate the art from the artist but I'm not always able to. Is what it is.

I do this regularly, when I'm enjoying a movie or song i think of the material. I barely think of the artist behind it. I understand people not being able to do this but I hate when people treat someone who can as a horrible person. (Of course there are some exceptions.)

Does anyone remember those months following the release of the first part of documentary when fans would stream out of resentment? When he released “I Admit” and when that nostalgia rush hit? Ironically during that time he recruited another underaged girl to his trafficking ring. Even if you weren’t defending his actions, listening to his music and perpetuating the hype at that time contributed to more victims. That’s what people keep losing when they have that conversation. Not what you did before, or if you listen to him now, but the ability to simply “read the room” when confronted with the artist’s wrongdoings. Now that he’s in jail y’all can do whatever you want. But it’s the fact that our actions didn’t reflect any form off reflection, only for the next victim to show up in part 3.

I can separate the artist from the art when the art itself isn’t tied to the unethical nature of that person. Best example I can think of is R Kelly v Chris brown. I can listen to Chris brown all day and feel no ways about it vs R Kelly’s disgusting behavior seeps into the music

I was never big on R. Kelly admittedly prior to his nastiness, but I am at the point where I can’t listen to or watch anything to do with Ye anymore. Its somewhat tainted for me and now Im at the point where I just get sick of seeing another dumb thing he chose to say. But I don’t shame people for stilling liking or listening to him.

Ehhh, I think it’s a case by case thing. R. Kelly is the only person that I cant listen to his music/artistry the same because he included his misdoings and vile crimes in his music. Every love song he created and displayed to the public was secretly about innocent minors. Like that’s disgusting. Also, no matter how you think, technically you ARE supporting the artist/person because you’re putting money in their pockets.

idk when it comes to music u putting money in they pocket with every listen that’s another reason why people cut them off. and in r kelly’s case he was probably talking about the kids he was taking advantage of in his music 🤢 karma not doing enough; him and the victims’ families who knew what was going on all need to be put down

Funny thing about Kevin Spacey's case is he was innocent and just recently was found not guilty but i guess people's opinions matter more than actual facts. He career ended because of false accusations.
