DefPoetry made me feel things as a teenager, it taught me the power of words in a message. Songs did too but the variety and depth of what could be said on that stage, with their voices alone, brought me to write for myself. I learned from beautiful wordsmith story tellers like Rives. Thank you.

this is the very 1st piece i heard from rives (when this episode aired), and by the end of this poem i'd fallen very deeply in like/lust with this man ;-)...my goodness, his way with words is hypnotizing.

I first heard him when I was 14, this very same poem. I'm turning 27 this year. I never tire if hearing his poems and stories. Genuinely as if I fall in love, awe, and respect for this man each time. I don't think I'll ever tire of him 🌻

Some of us do. Those of us that love to write, like myself. Generally speaking though, I think most of us live a pretty lonely life. I have written things for special people in my life many times. I feel like the process of creating something like this for someone is often undervalued. I think my mother has appreciated my writing way more than any woman. Usually I'm just met with an," Aw, that's so sweet." which isn't much of a reward for creating something that was so special to me and that I put so much time into. Maybe I'm just with the wrong women...but the only time I ever felt appreciated for it was by my mother and maybe one other girl. I feel like women only want guys like me for a moment. Like a thought or a poem. I really don't know many women who really want a sensitive/emotional guy. Maybe if it was appreciated more, more guys would do it.

For instance I write something for a girl and then she says something about it being sweet. Then I just feel like not doing it again, because it wasn't worth it to me. Just to hear some basic response. Why would I want to keep investing myself into creating something for someone who barely appreciates it?
