Rick Allen (drummer) is the very definition of perseverance through adversity. After the tour for their previous album "Pyromania" he was in a car crash that claimed his left arm (his dominant arm). Within weeks after losing his arm he had come up with the concept of his electronic drum kit and was in the studio recording this album. It was on thus tour where he earned his nickname "The Thunder God" from the overwhelming, enthusiastic, and supportive reaction from the audience at their first show. A friend of mine was actually at the show where this video was shot in Denver, Colorado and can be seen passionately singing this songs chorus.

Def Leppard came before Guns 'N' Roses. Def Leppard formed 1976, first album in 1980. This song is from the 4th record in '87. G'N'R formed in 1985. First album in '87. Lead singer is Joe Elliot. The other guy you were looking at when you said you liked his voice is bassist Rick Savage. He wasn't singing alone, he was singing backup with the rest of the guys. Phil Collen and the late Steve Clark on guitar, Rick Allen on drums. Steve Clark died in 1991 from alcohol poisoning and prescription drugs. Vivian Campbell joined in 1992, and has been there ever since. Viv had played with Groups like Dio and Whitesnake previously.

I’ll always love this band. The vibe is great for the 80s hair and power rock. Works so good. And when Rick lost his arm in a auto accident they gave him over a year to recover and fabricated the foot pedals to cover the lost arm so it sounded flawless. These guys are what defines a true friend. Musicians were coming and going all the time back then.personality clashes. Artistic differences, solo aspirations. So sticking with him was a real statement to me. For that alone I will keep them high up in my list of great bands of the day.

For sure! I give them huge credit for keeping him and waiting for him to get to the point where he could drum again. He had a custom kit built and had to learn to play more with both feet. Rick Allen, the drummer, lost his arm when he was 21. He'd been with the band since he was 15. At the height of their success, they waited until he healed and re-taught himself how to play. He has a special kit, in which his left pedal could emulate what his left arm could do. He still suffers PTSD from the accident to this day and sees drumming and painting as therapeutic healing for him.

Fun fact: In December 1984 the drummer (Rick Allen) lost his left arm after a near-fatal accident in England. His arm got caught in the seatbelt and severed from his body. He told the band to continue without him, but they refused to go on without him. You can watch this movie made about the band that tells the story pretty good I think: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fHarknirnrNmeaM In August 1986 Def Leppard attended and played the Monsters Of Rock in Stockholm, Sweden - I attended. They had a backup drummer on the tour and Rick was supposed to play some initial songs and then be replaced - but he played the whole show and even gave us a drum solo. A magic evening.

Not sure if anyone else mentioned this, but this song was based on an almost throwaway riff from an acoustic jam session by the lead singer, during a break in production. The producer, the legendary "Mutt" Lange, happened to hear it, and liked it so much that he encouraged the band into making it a fully fledged song. The recording sessions for the album had been very long, and they were already considerably behind schedule. But Lange was a notorious perfectionist, and he felt the album needed one more song, hopefully one that would be a crossover hit. He felt this song would be the one. He wasn't wrong. Though it was a "last-minute" addition, by Mutt Lange production standards, it turned out to be their biggest hit - one that propelled the album back to the top of the charts over a year after the album first came out. The song was everywhere, in the spring and summer of 1988 - including in my Walkman. 🙂
@angharaddenby33896 күн бұрын
This was also based on the Archies' hit "Sugar Sugar" - it is obvious from the chorus, which is a near note-for-note copy. Listen to the Archies' hit and you will see what I mean.

Def Leppard is one of my all time fav bands. I remember when this song came out it skyrocketed to the top of the charts and i wore out the cassette, not to date myself at all here lol, but it was just that good that I actually wore the tape out and had to buy a new one lol. I miss the 80s music was so much more fun back then and very relatable to how most of us felt. I enjoy today's metal but its just not as relatable and fun to song along with like the 80s were. today's music for the most part lacks heart! for the record Rick actually designed his own drum set to work with his feet more then his arms.

4:55 yeah Rick “Thunder God” Allen lost his arm in an accident on New Years Eve 1984. He’s played most his life with one arm. He was 21 when the accident happened. The seatbelt took his arm off. If it wasn’t for a nurse and officer that was nearby and helped him he wouldn’t have survived. They reattached his arm but it got infected and couldn’t be saved. Someone brought him a boombox (tape deck plus radio for the younger generation) and he noticed he was tapping his left foot to the music so he worked to build a drum kit that would play the sounds he normally would do with his left arm using his left foot. Their first tour after the accident they hired a backup drummer in case it was too much for Rick cause he hadn’t performed in concert since the accident. The backup was late and they went ahead and played. When the backup showed up he said after watching Rick that he wasn’t needed. I’ve seen these guys in concert many times and they never disappoint. My daughter is a huge fan of 80s music. For her sweet 16 a few years ago the whole family chipped in for her to see Journey & Def Leppard in concert. She’s got special needs and the family spoils her. They gave her extra money for souvenirs. I spent most of the concert with my phone on her recording her reactions. 8:23 there are so many Def Leppard songs to check out. “Love Bites”, “Hysteria”, “Armageddon it”, “All Night”, “Animal", “Bringin' On the Heartbreak", “Demolition Man", "Foolin'”, “Four Letter Word", "Goodbye", “Guilty”, “Let’s get rocked”, “Man enough”, “Nine Lives” (with Tim McGraw), “Now”, “Rock on”, “Photograph”, “Promises”, “Rock of Ages”, “Two Steps Behind”, “Undefeated” “Dangerous”, “Let’s go”, “Kick” & “We Belong” are from their more recent albums releases. One song to check out (I don’t believe there’s a music video) “Pour Some Sugar on Me” with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. They did a whole album of their old songs with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra backing them.

They have a bunch of great videos and I can tell you're into them. The drummer had both arms until he was in a bad car accident driving a Corvette in England and he almost died but he lost his arm in the accident the car got his arm got pinned under the car when it flipped over. So they created a new drum set for him where he can play some of the parts for his left hand with his feet. If you watch the videos for Foolin or photograph or Armageddon it he has both arms of those videos. All these videos when they were huge were from the early to late 80s. This was my sister's favorite band growing up. She wrote the lead singer of Joe Elliott that she loved him twenty-three thousand times in a notebook and sent it to him on his 23rd birthday way back in the 80's. You might want to try any of these videos next: 1.Foolin 2.Photograph (about the bands obsession with Marylin Monroe) 3.Armegeddon It 4.Hysteria 5.Animal 6.Rock of Ages 7.Billy's got a gun... plus they have a ton of other huge hits. They were just about the biggest rock band in the world in the mid-80s when I was in my early twenties.

Def Leppard are a British Hard Rock Band that started in the 70s and got very big in the mid to late 80s. They have other rocking songs like this one but they also do many awesome rock ballads. For more rocking songs try Rock of Ages, Photographs, Let's Get Rocked and Rocket. For softer songs try Bringin on the Heartbreak, Animal, Love Bites, Hysteria, When Love and Hate Collide and Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad. Def Leppard became an 80s stadium Rock band and got put in the hair metal category. Guns N Roses always had a harder edge to them than the hair metal bands. They had more of a punk attitude. Maybe Bon Jovi is the closest to Def Leppard. Both 80s Stadium Rockers with a similar sound and energetic live show.

Another great Def Leppard song is When Love and Hate Collide. Others will no doubt recommend others as they have so many but that is my favourite song of theirs.

3:20 Def Leppard has their own sound. They don't really remind me of another band. They are extremely talented and came out with their own sound and style. Good times. Thank you for the reaction 💞

Def Leppard was an "arena rock" band. Other bands in this genre include Journey, Styx, AC/DC, Kiss and Foreigner. Foreigner is who they sound like the most. To let you know how popular they were at one time, their previous album, Pyromania held the #2 best selling spot on the Billboard charts just behind Michael Jackson's "Thriller" and was selling 100,000 copies EVERY DAY. Their follow up album, Hysteria sold more copies, but produced fewer hits due partly to the change in their sound caused by their drummer, and to the emergence of an up and coming band from San Francisco called Metallica.

This song was a phenomenon. The album 'Hysteria' sold several million records during the run of this single, and famously the record label shipped 400,000 copies in ONE DAY because of how popular this song was.

Def Leppard were in their prime in the 80s. Two of their albums, Pyromania (1983) and Hysteria (1987), are essential iconic albums of the 80s. They had a huge impact on contemporary hard rock and pop-driven metal, and there were lots of wannabe copycats. Guitarist Steve Clark (the blond one) passed away in 1991, and in my view they lost their secret sauce that day. But they are still touring and releasing albums. Some fans prefer their earlier stuff, but those two albums is what made their mark in history.

I think they fell into the 'Glam Rock' category (G & R were more Hard Rock) but they were more than that - a true talented band that was quite diverse in their music and had hit after hit doing it. Their songs really have a hard groove and a bounce for sure. You'll love their catalogue.
