Loved this. Is it possible to introduce a variability to when each shot is fired? I.e between every 0.98 and 1.02 seconds so that the guns aren't totally synced? That could make it more interesting.

Upgrades: Level 1: Basic tank. 0 pierce. Level 2: adds a 2nd barrel (flank) , doubling firerate to 1 side. Level 3: turns 2 barrels to one, the bullets are now bouncing, along with more shooting. The bullets have 5 bounce (pierce but how much it bounces instead of phasing) Level 4: the bullets are now smaller but shoot 2x/3x faster. No bouncing. Level 5: Turns the barrel to a cannon. Has infinite pierce. No bounce. Is very large at the cost of low firerate.

Idk how you would implement it properly, given the randomness of it all, but I think instead of having a set list of upgrades that progress slowly on a timer, you should instead have a small box with a ball in it and some randomizer-obstacle that picks an upgrade for it, like attack speed, bullet size, longevity of bullets (for the bouncers), heat-seeker capabilities etc. Using a range of upgrades with a faster progress bar could make the fights more interesting but possibly also a bit more intense on the pc and harder to follow.. idk, just a thought
