You are a golden standard to show how we see Australia. Nothing wrong with someone spending a quarter of a million just for a vehicle and a camper but you show how normal people should do!

Thanks mate.. quarter of a million sounds nice, but would probably buy another Defender and do a nut/bolt rebuild.

Hi Brett, You will love it. I am Defender Mulgo Poptop #18. I recently got inspired to do an internal fitout after seeing the Landyhus site. I will make floor to under bed height cupboards from the driver seat to the rear. There will be a sink and 2 burner gas on top at the rear with the gas bottle outside. The passenger side will have a seating to still give me side vision when driving. I am actually starting my build tomorrow. I am also looking at getting my vehicle weight down. I hope to see more of your build progress. Best regards, Ian.

I'm pleased for you that you are getting the new roof and more space Brett, It's going to change improve your comfort levels incredibly. It'll almost be like getting a new vehicle. I'm currently in the middle of modifying my vehicle and when I watched you today I could here myself doing the same as you, trying to work out where I can put stuff, trying to reduce weight etc. I'm really pleased that you have been invited to the Sydney show, I know that a lot of 4x4/overland KZbin presenters are attending this year, I hope it brings you the exposure you deserve. Congratulations...

Good stuff Brett, this will be far more suited to your travels & give you the opportunity to replace everything with lighter gear & better storage. Hoping you remember my post about the Hesch defender interiors for ergonomic storage systems where you get a great seating/living area position with storage built round that rather than adapting poorly dimensioned storage into seating as many people try. Look forward to the final result 👍
@RoamingTheOutback5 жыл бұрын
yes mate.. was just on their website a few days ago getting more ideas.. completing rethinking the possibilities into perhaps a living room, rather than a few storage boxes. Alot to consider on which axle I put the wait over and what I pack where. Next year though.. budget is blown this year.
@gaj57015 жыл бұрын
At a rough guess, using that 'Connect-It' Aluminium square tubing system & 6mm marine ply from Bunnings it would probably run around the $600 mark with hinges, locks etc. If you pop rivet the joints & then bond the ply with sikaflex to the frame in addition to rivets, that will be enough for the roughest conditions around. Will probably weigh about the same as a set of steel drawers for a full height & a seat unit too so shouldn't be that bad for weight. If you can definitely arrange the seating so it converts into a full length bed to give you a stealth mode, or for heavy storms you may encounter. Either way, it will be a different vehicle now you have the mezzanine level so enjoy it dude 😀

Hi Brett....watching with interest. Don't remember if you have a centre cubby box or not. If you do, I can highly recommend an under cubby box enclosure with a sub woofer. Check up mud stuff here in the uk as its where I got mine from. Very easy to fit and the sound is unbelievable trust me. The plus benefit is that the cubby box is raised by about 6-8 inches or so which gives you a much better height for the cubby box being an arm rest. An excellent mod you won't regret. Speak with Kevin at mud stuff 👍👍

Looks like a well thought out setup,cost of installing poptop as opposed to towing a small 4x4 trailer would run through my head. I know security and towing would be a factor when travelling around this country as my comrade the bush Tucker man was against. I do still do short runs with a normal trailer and find it valuable for putting wood fire in as well as a lot of my gear which leaves my land rover county to sleep in. Yes weight is a enemy for people like us and if you look at past explorers like the Leyland Brothers they did it with VW Combies with their families,how they managed the weight problem is bewildering.
@RoamingTheOutback5 жыл бұрын
The Leyland's travelled in simpler times without all the toys we can enjoy today, but they also had experience on their side.. I'll be repacking after this and dropping a few additional items off I haven't used so still learning.
