My brother studied languages at the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center in California. The pace of study was intense. Students had to master the language course in 36-64 weeks. Psychologically it was very difficult, but fortunately he was helped by Yuriy Ivantsiv's book "Polyglot Notes. Practical tips for learning foreign languages”. The book " Poliglot Notes" became a desk book for my brother, because it has answers to all the problems that any student of a foreign language has to face. Thanks to the author of the channel for this interesting video! Good luck to everyone who studies a foreign language and wants to realize their full potential!

(Ancient History) They used to take an "A-Lat" or "A-Lap" test to get into Army's language school. Graduates got one of the Specialist ranks ("Spec"). I tried to enlist in 1973 but couldn't pass the dayum physical, so I never got to take the test for that school. Some languages (like Korean) were longer courses than others (like German). The school was in Monterey, California. I often wondered if a polyglot (multi-lingual) soldier would qualify as a Warrant Officer.

Maybe DLI changed since I was there, but my experience was not the same as those who speak so highly of the institution. I enlisted in the Army specifically to study Arabic. Of course I would get Arabic - no one wants to study Arabic! Completely qualified and motivated to do so, but the Army assigned me a language I had no desire to study or learn. This was a huge mistake on the Army’s part - not capitalizing on a person’s prior study, background, and experience, but telling them you’re going to do what we Want you to do and you will like it, no matter how insane it is. They told me that I could re-enlist and get Arabic for my second enlistment. I completed the course and graduated by putting in the bare minimum that I needed and left the Army at the end of my enlistment. Lie to me the first time around, I won’t trust you the next time. Several years later I went to the Middle East and learned Arabic in country.

There is some leeway especially with the army it seems. When I first came here, I met a soldier who had gotten Russian and was able to change his language to Chinese since he wrote in a request to some government civilian in charge of selecting the languages. I'm air force and tried changing my language within the first week of being here and was told that it wasnt doable at all

Y’all need to consider what you’re getting into when you sign up and come here. These courses are super intense and the rules in TRADOC and just in general are getting worse and worse. This will keep you 2 years in TRADOC and the real Army is not like this. If you want to come here I suggest coming as a careerist or in another branch.

How very true. DLI is great if you are a prior service enlisted person or an officer. Not good if you are a non-prior service enlisted person. This applies to all services. Such people are treated like children and pressured to 'volunteer' downtown. Then the military wonders why their retention rates for linguists are so low. Spent half of a four-year enlistment in training, only two years in the field, then separated.
