As a patrol boat or escort vessel, yes. But remember, despite the fact the Starfleet is seemingly the Federation's ONLY line of defense, they are a scientific and exploratory agency first and so are their ships. They are as much flying laboratories as they are warships and that's going to make them bigger than any single purpose ship.

Starships the size of the Defiant are highly agile at sub-light speeds, but canonically slower at warp than larger vessels. This means slower deployment and longer response time to threats.

Defiant class makes an extremely poor scientific and exploratory vessel. Starfleet is not a military force.

I liked that they added another row of screens where the textured metal surfaces were on the side consoles, though I think I preferred the captain's consoles here to the ones thay they got changed to later.

You do hear it differently in Call to Arms when the Defiant and the Rotarran are fleeing. You can distinctly hear the difference when they cloak.

As well as what Simon said, there is the MSD on the back wall missing. The really glaring one is that there's a ribbed silver panel at eye height by the big consoles that would later be replaced by screens

I think because of the cloaking device, which they were allowed to have, but only in the Gamma Quadrant.

It was mutual agreement to have the cloaking device installed in exchange for having a Romulan officer onboard to operate it and that all scientific data in the Gamma quadrant, including the Dominion, would be passed onwards to the Romulan government.

@@ValiantWrestling Two words: IN UNIVERSE. I guess I forgot to add those. The SISKO was at first interested in engineering and ship design than command. Then Leyton promoted him to Lieutenant Commander in command division.. While at UPFY he looked at various bridges and such.

Let me get this straight. The alpha quadrant is the federation turf, gama is the dominions and delta is the borgs so who is running beta quadrant? Not the ferengi i presume.

The Federation is almost evenly split across the Alpha and Beta quadrants. The Sol system is actually on the dividing line between the quadrants. The Alpha quadrant has the Cardassians and various other empires. While the Beta quadrant holds the Klingon and Romulan empires. So it is wrong to say the Alpha quadrant is Federation turf only, the Federation is just as much a Beta quadrant power. In fact in the early years of the Federation they mostly went into the Beta quadrant and their main Alpha expansion came after the peace and borders with the Romulans and later the Klingons were set up. Each peace treaty saw a burst in expansion in the opposite direction, IE into the Alpha quadrant.

If we go by Voyager, the Malon occupy an overlapping part of the Beta quadrant, and the Borg also has an arm that stretches into the Beta as a continuous swath from the Delta.
