Mike, We read guards and under keys with our inside linebackers. I have had the most success with this reading system in high school due to the wide variety of offensive systems you will encounter each season.

The Spur in SC's defense is a SS/RV in a 4-2-5 defense. In the 3-4 your Spur player would be either your SS or WILB, depending on who you designate as your adjuster..

I think it is important we teach high school football players base structures of offense and defense. I want my players to know why a 3-4 or 4-3 or 425 is labeled that way. I am a teacher and a coach so I want to educate my players on the game of football, not just how it is played. If you want to recognize formations concentrate on personnel groupings first. How many Tight Ends, Rb's, Wr's are there in the game? Then look at receiver distribution. 1x1,2x1,3x1,2x2 is all you will see

I've been a 3-4 guy from the 80's and I am familiar with Saban's system as well. The LB's are as follows: Sam = SOLB, Mike = SILB, Will = WILB, Jack = WOLB.

I don't think so Randy, the Jack to my knowledge is the old will ilb position and the will replaced the rush as the olb. That is just from the 3-4 guys that I learned from, and it may not be universal. I think Saban calls the WILB the Jack also.

There are some nfl teams that call the weak ilb the jack. Rex Ryan has been known to do it, and the Cowboys have done it as well.

The Jack linebacker is the weak side OLB, harris is correct. I have always called him a Rush LB and still call my weakside def end in the 425 a rush. Some of my friends up north play with the Jack in the box and the will outside. Really irrelevant what you call them but harris is correct with Saban terminology. I play with a Right Safety and Left Safety in the 425 which technically could be called the Strike and the Whip.

not very familiar with 3-4's... and I don't know if you are familiar with South Carolina's defense... but is the J LB similar in nature to what USC calls a SPUR? (a safety/LB hybrid)

Always leave a drop down player weak, safety or corner depending on where the ball is. DE must wrong arm the fullback and make the ball bounce. Mike need to get over the top of the trash when he sees pull away.

Hey coach. When adjusting to the Twins set while using divorced concepts for the 3-4 Under, why not just let the SAM stay in his 9 technique and have the FS apex to the twins side? In general, I think always having SAM to the run strength and a 'weak' safety (FS) always away from the strength allows the SS to be the only moving player (kinda like your 4-2-5 FS) after run strength is declared. Like you said there are only few instances where the Run and Pass Strength would differ. In my example, doubles would be played the same way you suggested and the other exception (against Trips) you can just set the Run strength opposite Trips and you can play your standard coverages (Special on the Trips side, 2 Sky opposite Trips w/ SAM being the 'Sky'). The only problem I can see is empty, but you would have problems with empty regardless of how you play it (due to the 3-4).

You could probably do that, I've never played divorced front stuff when I was using 3-4 scheme. Sounds solid though.
