Because of this video I ordered the Cat shielding paint for a humming guitar. It's thick stuff and worked 100 percent with one coat on bare wood. Still plenty left for a couple more guitars if ever needed. I used a small torch beam as I worked to show up any tiny bits I missed and kept brushing till they were covered. I used your tip of painting small tabs of paint on the top edge of the cavity to connect with the shielding on the scratch plate. It dries quick but I took no chances and left it overnight before reassembling. I now have a perfectly quiet guitar. Thanks again for the vids, Educational AND practical.

@@DevilAndSons What you are trying to build is a version of a Faraday Cage which you are trying to shift to the groundSo your shield has to be shifted to the ground as a whole, preferably to a single ground (to eliminate induction) . The contact to the ground path has to be as good as possible which means you clean the surfaces properly to get rid of oxidation and then solder. Top of the pots touching the shield is not enough and can cause more harm then good. I am an electronics engineer, this is 101

Fact 1: Shielding MAY reduce hum and interference, but it doesn’t eliminate it. Fact 2: You don’t need to cage in the electronics (Faraday cage) that is a myth. Fact 3: As long as the shielding covers a substacial area be it under the pickguard or cavity it must be grounded, that way it acts similar to an antenna and can send unwanted noise (be it small to) ground instead of the output. Fact: 4: Ground loops are also a myth for guitar circuits. Fact 5: The less guitar myths you believe, the more enjoyable your playing will be. 😜

I have 1 Strat and play it constantly. I know what this guitar sounds like, the sound got kind of sterile when I shielded just the control cavity. Ripped it out. Sure it made it less noisy (not that noisy to begin with) but at the cost of the tone. Been playing for 43yrs, not a newbie. It's funny how not 1 utube video mentions the sound difference yet just about every post on guitar forums tells you this.

@PatatoKeftes
@PatatoKeftes 2 ай бұрын
There should be NO DIFFERENCE in your tone after shielding your guitar. If there is nothing between your strings and pickups then the tone is unaffected, it's simple physics. The shielding does not connect to your "hot" wires therefore does not affect your signal. You probably shorted something that bled signal to ground. Or there was an existing signal short to pot or switch body that was not apparent due to the lack of shielding and therefore lack of path to ground, and found a way to bleed to ground after shielding the cavity. KZbin videos do not mention tone alteration when shielding because there is none. Shielding DOES NOT ALTER TONE in any fucking way....

Best is copper tape with conductive adhesive covered with a coat of graphite paint. The paint by itself has a resistance of around 200 ohms for a 1/2" strip 12" long, which is far too high (I measure a strip of copper tape at 0.07 ohms but higher - 3.5 ohms - if you use several strips on a cavity due to the adhesive. Combining copper with graphite on top in a cavity gives 1.2 ohms . Not the ideal zero but a reasonable practical value.

Cool experiment, but define "amazing job". It sounds like there's ~3dB reduction in the upper-harmonics of the AC hum, which is to be expected. It may not be significant compared to the whole dynamic range, and may also reduce the same range in the pickup signal. The odd thing is that the adhesive side of Al tape isn't usually conductive. That shouldn't have made an improvement unless the eddy currents from Al dispersed some of the magnetic signal. I just use Al tape. The difference with the carbon paint is negligible.

@DevilAndSons
@DevilAndSons Жыл бұрын
Yes, but in fact there are lots of things to take into account. Some wire is shielded anyway, and some pots are just better built than others. But generally humbuckers are designed in a way that eliminates the hum, so you may not notice any difference with shielding. Most humbuckers are going to have a metal base that works like shielding would, and that's wired into the ground loop, and some p90s and single coils may have metal bases too but that's not as common (at least with single coil, I'm notb100% sure with p90s).my thoughts are you may as well shield unless you have something that may interfere with shielding, for example I'm installing a piezo pickup and preamp that recommends you don't shield your guitar as the preamp may pickup interference from that.I hope that helps. Happy strumming.

Shielding the cavity is just a rubbish way of making an antenna to capture the EMF. if you just shielded the pickguard and grounded that it would be much better than what you did here as it covers a larger surface area and captures to bleed EF to ground. now, if you shielded the pickguard and grounded it THEN did the cavity's and comnpared the two, you would find it made little difference as shielding the pickguard captures a greater percentage after that shielding the cavites is just capturing a miniscule amount of whats left, also just seen you comment below about faraday cage. that does not apply to guitar as you cannot create a closed system and unless it is closed it does nothing. there is no such thing as a faraday cage half working. a faraday cage with a hole in it EG. the pickups is not a faraday cage and does nothing.
@DevilAndSons
@DevilAndSons 2 жыл бұрын
You are definitely right about the Faraday cage, people talk about that all the time but the pickups will always be outside it surely. I'm not sure about the rest of what you said as shielding the cavity does make an auidable difference. I can't see how just shielding half the cavity (the pickguard) is better than shielding it all.
@BLACKSYNTH
@BLACKSYNTH 2 жыл бұрын
@@DevilAndSons ahh right well basically by shielding, your not covering anything or blocking as such. As the only Ef your guitar can pick up if from the pickups, and you cannot cover them so Your making an antenna so the EF gets absorbed more by that and sent to ground rather than the pickups. As for the most part the pickguard is usually large enough to make an antenna that by that point there’s not much left for the small cavity antennas to capture as the pickguard has already scooped up. With no shielding on the pickguard yeah you will hear a difference by just shielding the small cavities. If you look at a band say autolux years ago they covered their whole guitar body and bass body’s in shielding on the front (as they use a ton of effects) making a huge antenna around the pickups and sending it to ground. Has nothing to do with stopping ef hitting the controls or switches that would be impossible without at least an inch thick of copper surrounding it.

In a real situation it would be a ground link between electronics, shielding and the strings, meaning you would be always touching it when playing. As you can see in any faraday cage demonstration, if you touch from outside, it doesn't work. My experience is: shielding doesn't work in real life. Twisting pickup wires for phase canselation, humbuckers and dummy coils work great, but shielding is placebo.

@@DevilAndSons definitely it won't hurt shielding (except for vintage guitar with weak magnets... Seth Lover explained why talking about his choice of materials for paf covers). Except for my 71 Dan Armstrong all my guitars are shielded and what I can tell is that as soon as I touch the strings my marshall starts playing FM radio if the outlet socket isn't property grounded. xD

Interesting. I think the playing the radio is to do with the grounding on the amp.

Shielding is for EF radiation like when you guitar is too close to other equipment/lights. not 50/60hz hum. pickguard & cavity shielding have absoloutly nadda to do with AC hum.

My guess is Crimson guitars. I use copper tape and shielding paint. Preferring the paint for the cavities because the cavities don't tend to be none too smooth and the paint can get into all the crevices nicely, with the tape on the back of the compartment covers.

I should have tried that combo, it does make sense to tape the back of the covers. The video at the end of the month will reveal the logos (but you're doing very well).

I think you're right, the shielding paint you can buy must be of varying quality (and price). I bought a cheap make online to test and it was actually quite good so I'm sure making your own must be at least that good.

I can't believe that you consistently called the metalic tape "insulation". Insulation by definition does not conduct electricity... only SHIELDING conducts. By the way, if the tape does not have an adhesive that also conducts electricity, (if it was not designed to be used specifically for SHIELDING) then your final effort will be inconsistent and merely a patchwork of isolated metal islands.
@DevilAndSons

Yes, i can't believe it either. It's annoying and I corrected it in other videos. Anyway, you are right about the glue, that's why I'm not a fan of tape.

Two things that don’t make sense, 1. The noise you are shielding is 50hz and 60hz depends on the country, this is from your line the the ambient, not in air. 2. Shielding is suppose to create a Faraday Cage of what it enclosed and protect from RF interference, but your strings and pickups are outside of the shielding and these are the sources that pickup and amplify any RF signals. You are better of using twisted pairs in your wiring that scientifically eliminates noise….noise signals will cancel each other out.
@DevilAndSons
@DevilAndSons 2 жыл бұрын
The Faraday cage is definitely a thing, hence why the more that is linked up the better, but you can't (as you say) put a cage around the whole thing. Technically the strings aren't oart of the circuit although they are grounded, the pickups work by the magnetic interference from the strings. Shielding the wires also helps, hence why most pickups will have shielded wires, and most humbuckers will have a metal plate underneath that is grounded too.
@bluwng
@bluwng 2 жыл бұрын
@@DevilAndSons think of the signal path, consider the signal wire and the wires a pipe. All shielding outside the wire is external to the pipe. Your signal is the water in the pipe once your strings pickup RF it is duplicated in the magnetic field which will then go from your pickups to wires to your out and out to its final processing and output.
