8th Attempt?!?! Insane Colin, I really hope we get to see you on more of these historic hard boulders
@sam-yauАй бұрын
Really just goes to show how next-level strong top level competition climbers are outdoors, with the main hurdle being all that time spent training and traveling for the brutal competition season rather than actually being on real rock. It feels like the transfer from indoors to outdoors is more applicable than vice versa, especially with other notable recent examples like Tomoa flashing V14 and Janja on Bugelesen Sit (twice). On the other end of the spectrum, what many consider to be the strongest outdoor climbers have fallen off of performing as relatively well in competition (Ondra, Stefano, Megos).
@alanzhan4436Ай бұрын
@@sam-yau while i agree with you that there's a lot of talent on the indoor arena which is underrated, you're missing the people in the outdoor arena that are in this very video that are sending just as hard.
@ShakespeareanBroncobusterАй бұрын
@@sam-yau I dont think that should be your major takeaway. Many of the strongest outdoor climbers just dont excel at the modern setting style of bouldering competitions. They are very dynamic and coordination based. Also, Megos and Ondra still perform quite well in lead comps. They are performing worse at boulder comps for reasons stated above. Its just that comp bouldering style is just very different now. Also, a few of the guys are considered the best boulderers alive admitted that they arent good at comp boulders (Bosi, Webb, and Rabatou). Bosi may be THE BEST boulderer alive. He self proclaimed that he is bad at comp boulders. If duffy beat him at a climbing comp, does that mean Duffy is a better boulderer? NO. It is a style issue, not a strength issue. Having said that, many of the best comp climbers are already some of the most elite climbers in the world. They are already have world class strength and technique. They are just better with comp style setting and comp pressure. However, it makes perfect sense that they are elite on outdoor projects. You cant be elite as a comp climber and bad at outdoor climbing lol. That doesnt mean that they can walk up V17s, though. In fact, they dont. I dont believe any of the top comp boulderers have repeated or FAd any v17s. Im referring to people such as: Narasaki, Duffy, Roberts, Anraku, Amagasa, Lee etc.

@ShakespeareanBroncobuster I don't think that's what @sam-yau was saying. I vastly prefer outdoor climbing and climbers to indoor but the transfer does seem to be much better than what people claim. For someone like Colin to train for his goals and also happen to make one of most difficult moves on rock this easy is something that's new to the sport. Comp climbing has not been developed long enough to see a large set of comp focused athletes test themselves on rock and I completely agree with the sentiment that what we're seeing with the previous examples is pretty nuts, and seems to show that the skill in comp climbing is so high in all areas that the most insane challenges on rock are within their capability with much, much, much less specific training than the best rock climbers. I definitely agree with you that they're not necessarily better climbers and certainly not better rock climbers, but the Boulders that have gone down in such short order by people with indoor skin and no reason to project does show that there's at least a physical aspect that's a cut above, and a broader range of movement knowledge that not only does something completely different but is able to replicate the challenges outdoors just as well if not better than the people who still devote 100% of their time to it. Sean Bailey is one of the best examples of someone who's talents may lie in rock but is no slouch of a comp climber crushing outdoors when given the opportunity. Noah and Ben are a new generation of outdoor climber that may be just as good on rock and pure physicality, maybe still slightly better, but they have such a limited range in comparison and that's bound to limit them at some point in comparison to people like Colin and Sean. I know Sean may be a little old for the comparison but idk any other ex comp rock prodigies, not enough have retired yet.
