Great interview! Interesting to hear how that first tour of the US had such a big influence on them and their music. They completely changed their direction after that. I finally got to see them in concert when they toured the US in 2022. Great live band! Thank you for this!

G'day from Australia. I seen Del Amitri on the 1st tour here for Waking Hours & was an absolute fan from the second I heard Kiss This Thing Goodbye. I then waited patiently for 32 years & so many albums & solos later to finally see them again down here earlier this year. Still as good now as they were then. I worked as a roadie in the mid to late 90s & found a lot of us meat head heavy metal listening bunch of crazies that were also big Del Amitri fans. Thank you for this interview, I'm still coming down from their Sydney show, I also turned my Dutch wife into a fan too.

Stephen King has said that Always The Last To Know is one of his favourite songs because it is so sad. That pay off/ twist at the end is so poignant and adds to the power of the song every time. The Waking Hours is a superb album which still holds up extremely well to this day. I bought it in the summer of 1989. The buzz around Nothing Ever Happens was quite something, and it really was unique. Lyrically, Del Amitri are up there with the best. Move Away Jimmy Blue is one of their best pieces of social observation. I saw them in Liverpool in 2002 when they opened with Always The Last To Know!

Thanks very much for this thoughtful interview. Justin seems like such a nice guy, and he is an incredible song-writer and musician. I think Justin saying that it was "over" for Del Amitri after the poor commercial performance of the 'Can You Do Me Good' album skirts the issue of why the album did not sell. And of course the answer to that is that electronica was probably not what Del Amitri fans were looking for (and while I really admired Justin and Iain for putting out that album, it is not to my taste).

Well he’s also thoughtful! A radically different sound is always problematic!
@drutgat2
@drutgat2 Жыл бұрын
@@popthehistorymakers Yes, he is very thoughtful. I would respectfully disagree with you about radically different sounds always being problematic - The Beatles (whom Justin refers to in this interview) - were continually innovating new sounds, and they had the ability to do that in such a way that the public accepted them most of the time (although 'Strawberry Fields Forever' was too far out for the public at that time).

Loved this interview - been a fan of Del Amitri since Waking Hours. Justin is a brilliant song writer and their work is so relatable to. Have seen them 3 times - most recently in Belfast as Simple MInds support. (How wrong does that sound?) Always desrerve to be headlining their own shows. I'd love to be someone discovering Del Amitri for the first time today but still happy that I have been listening to them for the last few decades.

Around the same time Del Amitri was on A and M, there was another artist on A and M doing Americana roots rock named Michael Anderson, his two records with A and M were Sound Alarm and a self titled follow up. Not a lot of info out there about him or his time with A and M but might make a good episode.

What a fine fellow Justin is and a super interviewer this. I hope @popthehistorymakers considers asking the guy who came through the same time as Del Amitri but over on the Emerald Isle... Old Liam from Hothouse Flowers because he's an intriguing guy too and really always struck me as the Irish version of Del Amitri or Del Amitri were the Scottish version of Hothouse Flowers. Many many parallels... I dare say I've spelt that incorrectly.

Good idea and thanks for the compliment. I’ll try. Actually when I worked at MTV, hothouse flowers, if I remember correctly, played at one of their legendary parties. And afterwards there was a karaoke session where I grabbed the mic and managed to break one of my front teeth. So a lot to catch up on.
