Del Piero could have changed the result of the Euro 2000 final

Del Piero missed two important chances in the Euro 2000 final.
At the end, the winner changed.
However, 6 years later, he scored in the penalty shootout and Italy won against France in the World Cup final.
This is life.

Del Piero gets too much critics Regarding his Italy runs in world and euro cups. While i agree people expected more from someone like him , people ignore how he was in terrible phisical and psycological conditions during euro 2000 and how in general he always had to play as a substitute and in a Role that wasn't his natural one. Yet he is the 4th best scorer in italy history

Sante parole. Ci vollero 2 stagioni per recuperare Del Piero, soprattutto dal punto di vista psicologico. Ma la gente non capisce, o non ha la sensibilità per farlo. Il rapporto con la Nazionale fu sempre compromesso dagli infortuni, come nel '98, ma soprattutto dal fatto che a quasi tutti i CT sembrava giusto far giocare Del Piero da esterno sinistro.

@@pietrovalastro. per quell'Europeo Zoff doveva chiamare Roberto Baggio. Del Piero fece una stagione senza acuti. Baggio gioco poco per colpa di Lippi ma dimostrò allo spareggio col Parma di essere in forma strepitosa e saper vincere le partite da solo

@@vandamme84Zoff, come Ancelotti, provò a recuperare Del Piero dandogli fiducia (e onestamente come fai a rinunciare a un potenziale patrimonio di quel livello? Pensiamo a cosa è tornato a fare Del Piero dal 2001 al 2009), ma sicuramente Baggio in quel periodo era più meritevole.

@@pietrovalastro. si ok. Non ti dico di escluderlo dalla nazionale ma del tutto se arrivi vicino ad un torneo continentale, dopo che ha fatto le qualificazioni e comunque viene da una stagione opaca, il ct dovrebbe ragionare nell'immediato e dire "questi giocatori sono quelli migliori al momento" perché poi purtroppo non gli ha fatto bene a livello psicologico fare quei due errori in finale.

The 2 goal cushion wasn't needed against Germany in 2006 as the game was already dead and buried thanks to Grosso's 119th minute winner.

Del Piero could have changed it but he didn't and the game went on. Nobody ever says that Italy was in possesion of the ball with a minute or less to go, still 1-0. So, if Italy (Totti if I remember well) would have managed the last paly more wisely instead of what they actually did, they could have easily won the Cup regardless of these two missed chances by Del Piero.

Del Piero had that year a grey season with Juventus. He came from a really serious injury and he was far away to be from the player he was in 96-97-98. It took still some years to see Del Piero's star to bright again. For that European Championship it was a terrible mistake never take in consideration to call Roberto Baggio because he finished the season in amazing shape

Baggio was not in good shape that year since the stupid manager of Inter kept him sitting all season. Also, Zola should have been in that final vs France. Vieri was injured. France needed an African to score in extra time with fresh legs vs an exhausted Italian defense and keeper. That cup was Italy's.

@@lorenzor124 Baggio did not play mach that year because of Lippi, but look how Baggio ended the season. Lippi was forced to let him play with the playoff for the Champions League against Parma. And Baggio had a magnificent performance and scored also 2 great goals. And yes, actually also Zola was in far better condition than Del Piero. Del Piero has been a great player but sometimes much luckier than Baggio and Zola because he has been called up also when he didn't deserve or wasn't fit at all.

Frankreich war bei dieser EM längst nicht mehr so gut, wie bei der WM 1998. Del Piero war nach seiner folgenschweren Verletzung im Jahre 1998 danach nicht mehr der Alte.

@@mategradac199 Baggio was out of shape from being kept on the bench all season by Lippi. He evidently had a personal problem against him. He should have been in that final vs Zidane.

Del piero was that who substitute Roberto baggio in france 98.However he did major mistakes in his prime times like in euro 2000 final and others matches in his career that made his popularity in lower level.

Del piero in 2000 was everything but prime time. Everyone knows that from 1999 to early 2001 he was in the shadow of himself. The 2000 del Piero wasn't in the right shape to be' the center of italy attack, people blame him , but the real blame goes to Zoff here

faltava Roby Baggio y Vieri en 2000. Tambien tal vez Zola el mago. Esa copa era de Italia sin duda vs los africanos de francia.

He has scored from similar positions many times. As much as I like him, it looks like he did not have the mentality to deliver at consistently at the highest stage. His performances at the 98 world cup were abysmal as well. Goal in 2006 semifinal did not change anything, the game was over.

You evidently know Italian football well. Too many ignorants on here raving about Del Piero! Sickening! In 98 he fell all over the place. Zola and Baggio should have played together vs France, then vs Brazil. That Agnelli family cost Italy. They pushed DP to play! Baggio was the real king, but was not available. Vieri was out with injury. And Zola was ignored (stupid mistake). Del Vecchio for 90 mins vs France? No. France needed an African to score in extra time with fresh legs vs an exhausted Italian defense and keeper. That cup was Italy's.

@@lorenzor124 I was a big Del Piero fan in late 90s and 2000s but looking back I realize that he was a very talented choker. Could not deliver anything for Juventus at the Champions league despite playing alongside Zidane, Inzaghi, Nedved and many other stars. Performances at World Cup and Euro are either abysmal or nothing to brag about. Basically, he was always fading away at the highest stage. Baggio performed much better despite multiple injuries and dislike from coaches. The only other guy to consistently perform for Italy was Cristian Vieri.

@@bekajikia1754scored dozens of heavy goals with Juventus, including in finals, and was a major reason why italy always qualified for world cups (just like now isn't it?). The problem with del Piero in world cups were that he was always injured or had to share his Space with other Players (the 98 stuff with Baggio helped no one of them). The only time the ct gave him the real chance was paradossaly the only time he shouldn't (euro2000, where he was nowhere near 100% phisically and mentally). For the rest he always had to play as a substitute in a different Role, yet he delivered goals and assists, also in world cups. Saying that del Piero couldn't deliver in Big Stages means you clearly don't know what your talking about. Euro 2000 is the only black in his illustrious career

@@fabio0352 players he shared time with also lost playing time but they performed. Baggio in 98 was much better and totti in 2000 was too. DP was anonymous in all games in 98. At Juventus, how many goals did he score in 4 CL finals he played in? Like 1 goal in 4 finals games. A leader with his credentials has to deliver something but he never did, not in CL finals, not in world cup, not in euros. He was always underwhelming at the highest stage. Its like you always expected him to come up with something special at this level and he never did.

@@bekajikia1754 are you kidding me right? In 97 he entered as a substutute and scored the goal that gave Juve hope with a heel Kick. In 98 he almost didn't played at all cause to injury and in 2003 he was tue only one to Keep cold ice nervs in a game where all Juventus was nervous . He was also the man who scored the goal for the Intercontinental Cup and in 96 he literally Carried the team into the finals. In 2008 he alone put Real Madrid on his knees not once but twice with a decimed team and you tell me he never did something special? What did you pretend him to fly? Or to be' Maradona? The only thing you can tell him anything is euro2000, where he shouldn't Have played at all considering his condition. I can't even Believe we are really questioning someone like Del Piero

Baggio was not in good shape that year since the stupid manager of Inter kept him sitting all season. Also, Zola should have been called up in that final vs France. Thuram and Barthez would have had a nightmare. Vieri was also injured. France needed a muscular African to score in extra time with fresh legs vs an exhausted Italian defense and keeper. That cup was Italy's. France should give it back since Africans are not Europeans.
