So in this video I compare these two types of pickups, split coil humbuckers by Delano and the classic single coils (pure vintage 64) by Fender.
The delanos are on a Maruszczyk Elwood 5a custom and the single coils come stock on the Fender Flea Road Worn bass.
I made this video to provide guidance to people interested in knowing more about the Delanos mainly.
There is no post processing! only level matching (+/-3dB)
Same strings, Elixir nickel coated 45-105
same cables, vovox
same DI, rupert neve designs
same interface, UAD apollo twin mkII

Great video man. I already put a set of split coil in my Lakland 55-60 and couldn't be happier with the tone and clarity! You can always roll off that tone to get a more vintage Fender Jazz tone. Delano preamps are nice and transparent as well. Good stuff!

Both sound good, but the Delanos have a little more clarity and definition 👍 I really love how you start off with the drums playing, and then you remove the drum track, while continuing on with just the bass, brilliant idea ! I don’t think I’ve heard anyone else do that, keep up the great work

Nice video! It is interesting to see the comparison to a more traditional J set. I also have a bass with JMVC although it's a 4 string. I can definitely tell it's similar to mine - there's something in the low end on the Delano. I think I prefer the Delanos vs the Fenders.

Much more similar than I expected, given that the Delanos are constructed so differently. It's not just single-coil vs humbuckers and different impedance, they also have fat single poles for each string and ceramic bar magnets instead of AlNiCo5 pole pieces. Maybe they balanced the darkening effect of making a humbucker with applying less winds, and the stronger ceramic magnet compensates the loss of output? Whatever they did, they know what they are doing! I also have Delanos in my main bass, but it's the TheHybrid MM/J set, and I love it!

Thanks for posting this! I was having the hardest time even finding out if the Delano JMVC's were hum cancelling and this was super helpful. So, would you consider the JMVC's "dead quiet"? As in no noticeable hum when having one pickup solo'd?
@charlesbassiste
@charlesbassiste 2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely dead quiet, Matthew. Soloed, in parallel or series they're absolutely hum free. Since this video I've really understood the difference with classic single coils. Which is that the JMVC have more bottom end (bass and low mids) They have a hair less treble up top, like above 5kHz. Specially noticeable when slapping through an amp. Otherwise when both pickups are at 100 in parallel, they react like single coils. They create a mid-scoop, but less than the singles. The neck on its own has more growl than a single neck. The bridge has more bottom yet keeps the bite of a single bridge. Overall the JMVC are really nice sounding pickups, very musical sounding. I'd put them more in the "modern sounding" pickups rather than old school, but their sound can be shaped very easily. But in the end, if you want the jazz bass sound in a purist way, these will not quite satisfy.

Is this the alnico or ceramic version?
@charlesbassiste
@charlesbassiste 2 жыл бұрын
The fender are definitely alnico. The Delano are called JMVC Fe for ferrite I think. I don't know if the pole pieces are actually alnico. They don't do another version of these.

In this I compare two different basses with 2 different constructions with two different sets of pickups. They sound different who would guess?
@charlesbassiste
@charlesbassiste Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching justin431. Indeed they are different basses. Even two Fender Flea signature basses would sound different. The point here was to highlight the differences of the pickups, even if the rest of the bass also impacts the sound. That being said, the character of Delanos and Fender PureVintage do come across pretty well IMO. And this video is just for people to get an idea of what the Delanos sound like, as their website is very minimal in sound description/sound examples... Comparing them to a very common and well known pickup configuration, is only to give perspective to the auditor. This video isn't to figure "who's the best" !

Those vintage 64s are exceptionally good sounding pickups. The Delanos are alittle bland to me by comparison. I’m sure either would be fine in a band situation.

Nice Me'shell boyfriend groove 😄 Both sound good in their own right : original Fenders punchy and refined, Delanos more punchy in your face
@charlesbassiste
@charlesbassiste 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah well said ! Could say that the Delano are more defined and in comparison, the fender single coil are muddy... Almost. Funny thing is, I've tried another bass with Delano JMVC Fe pickups recently and they sound quite different... Concluding that the pickups just translate the vibrations of the strings. But the bass construction (wood, design,paint,lacquer etc) affect how the strings vibrate ... Thus changing the sound independently from the pickups.
@paolozak3014

@@charlesbassiste yes, plus the fact the thicker 5 strings neck definitely stiffens up the tone, favoring upper mids rather than bouncy bass & relaxed midrange. For this reason I don't dig basses with more than 4 strings, and multi-layered necks which claim to be good for stability yet sacrificing resonance behaviour imho
@charlesbassiste
@charlesbassiste 2 жыл бұрын
@@paolozak3014 well, the 5 string I'm gonna buy soon sounds like 4 string in terms of playfulness and mids. But has an additional string on top. It's a classic construction maple neck rosewood fingerboard but with Ash body. It sounds more full than my trusty old 4 string P bass... Quite brutal on all my other basses tbh.

@@charlesbassiste I hope you're right. What bass is it ? Personally I never tried a 5 string having the resonance of a 4, they always sound somewhat stiffer

The Delano pickups sound WAAAY better. The Fender ones sound like it deadens the tone. But I guess if you want your bass to sound like an old piece of shit from the 60s the Fender pickups work
@charlesbassiste
@charlesbassiste 2 жыл бұрын
Haha that's a bit harsh. But yeah I sold that fender now and got another 5 string bass with Delanos... Funny thing is both my 5 have the same Delano pickups in the same position, but they sound very different from one another... So conclusion is, pickups do matter ofc but also the sum of all the other parts of the instrument. And yeah the fender single coils or generally single coils have a stronger emphasis on mids. The Delanos are split coil (stacked), and they have a very tight low end and clear mids. As for the top end, there's more than enough to satisfy slappers...
