This tune was actually written by Bill Monroe in honor of his good friend Delbert Spray from Missouri. Delbert and his wife Erma Spray promoted many Bluegrass festivals and shows in the mid west for many years. Delbert Spray gave Karl a tape of Bill Monroe doing this number on stage at one of their events the day he (Bill Monroe) wrote it. Bill dedicated to Delbert from the stage in his introduction of the tune. Lyle Meador wrote several good instrumentals but not this one.

Absolutely correct. I knew Delbert and Erma for years. Their son, John, and I are the same age. Erma was my teacher in HS. Thanks for correcting the songwriting credit!

@@VinceGilbo Delbert was my Great Uncle. His half brother Leolen was my grandfather. Never knew much about him until a couple years ago. Always fun to learn more.
