As a psychology graduate, Gary did really well here. There are some pretty specific guidelines that are used in these sorts of situations and Gary did well not to stray too far from them. For example, notice when Dele was sharing personal information Gary never once said "I understand".

Judging by his interview he’s already there mate! He’s found some kind of peace and even if he doesn’t get back to that number 10 role well I’ll always remember that goal against palace. He will get there! He’s got similarities to Gazza but it’s a different era now and things can change for Del Boy whereas with Gazza it was too late in football terms. Just look back on some of them right footed volleys Dele scored. You never lose that kind of skill, that’s something he was born with and he can come back and he will never lose that natural technique not ever. Good look Del!

I think it’s brave for him to do this interview and it makes total sense as why he has always had to defend himself on the pitch the way he does. So sorry to hear you've struggled and amazing that you've found a way through. But, I have to challenge that statement about feeling free. Everyone's depression is unique and so you can't necessarily understand how other people feel. In this case (and yours from the sound of it) it's clearly linked back to a trigger event and whilst you'll always carry the scars, you can address the root cause and free yourself from the depression. However, there are people who suffer from Chronic depression and luckily they may never have had your trauma but equally they will never be free of it. Medication and therapy can help but they will always suffer from depression no matter what. What they need are some tools to manage it and having a great network of people around them (if they're lucky enough too) Definitely, everyone should open up and seek help when ready as that is liberating but for some, it's here to stay and it's important that people realise that rather than thinking help will alleviate it completely.

It must be definitely hard. If I had his money, I'd stop everything. However, since I'm grinding to makes end meet. That begins the push for me to get up and talk to people. Every basic things are difficult for me and required much more effort than people think it would be. Which is why telling people with mental illness to toughen up, shin up has opposite effect of what you wanted. The struggle is unimaginable to average people. Same. As an addict (and I mean generally, diagnosed as an addict per se.. so drink, drugs, food etc. It can be anything) it can last a long time. Took me 18yrs to kick worse addictions and still have some of the lesser ones. Very very brave of Deli, and this is first step. Have to be on your guard not to relapse but this is huge step. He’s very articulate and intelligent, he can conquer this in his personal life and professionally he can recover and get back to his best. I believe in him, there will be bumps in the road, important to reset and not give up. Long term fix, not easy. Rooting for him, as a spurs fan he was amazing for Tottenham and can be again.

I hope he doesnt put pressure on himself to get back to the player he was , this will hopefully be a huge weight lifted off his shoulders and he can get help , the last thing he needs is the media putting pressure on him to be the player he was , he needs to enjoy football again first , without that he will just continue doing what he is doing. i sadly dont think he will ever be that Dele Ali we knew 5 years ago , but seeing Dele Ali back enjoying football and glimpses of his skills should be enough for the time being

I don’t think I’ve ever wanted someone to succeed more in life than this guy now. If success is on the pitch that would be amazing - but just seeing him happy and healthy is more than enough. I’d love to see him on the pitch again though - even if it’s just so the crowd can show their admiration and support.

@@mrjones1696 Not quite sure I follow. For me, it’s nothing to do with life post Covid or people “being soft”. It’s been clear to me for ages that this guy was battling demons and, still, many people were quick to call him lazy or overpaid. All I’ve ever seen is a genuine guy who’s had issues - until now, we didn’t know what they were but he’s been brave enough to speak out. Maybe provoked by media threats of exposing him. But he told his story really well and I have loads of respect for his honesty. As I say, I’d just love him to succeed either on the pitch or just by being happy and healthy.

As an Arsenal fan I’m now rooting for Dele and hope he can find peace, irrespective of whether he regains his form. I think this interview will be a turning point for him and the game as a whole 🤞
