Deleted Disneyland: The Lion King Celebration-1996

There have been many versions of The Lion King in Disney theme parks around the world, but the first was a parade at Disneyland. What made “The Lion King Celebration” parade unique when it was introduced in 1995 was it was the first Disney parade to use Audio-Animatronics and also marked the introduction of "Puppetronics". These two innovations resulted in a parade that succeeded in bringing many of the characters from the Lion King to believable life. It’s also no surprise that the soundtrack of the parade relied heavily on the popular “I Just Can’t Wait To Be King” from the movie. There is a lot going on this one!

Wow! This parade was so well done! Love the Mufasa animatronics! And those alligators that moved around seemingly on their own were so cool! I want one!

This was a great capture from a moment in time. Thanks for re-posting on the Vintage Disneyland page recently. Having grown up in Garden Grove from 1966+, and remaining a Southern California resident for my life, I have good memories of Disneyland. Our summer bedtime was just after the fireworks, as we could stand in a certain spot outside our apartment and watch them, hearing the delayed boom as the finale struck. My mom would save all year to get us in for a full day from "rope drop" until sometimes 1 AM, back when they had long summer nights. She would pack food in our old metal cooler and we'd head out to the car mid-day for lunch to save money. She always had our pajamas packed in the car and while the parking lot would empty she would get us changed for the short two-mile drive home, in which time my brother and I would zonk out, fast asleep! In 1988, when the annual passes became a thing I bought them for us. She worked at UCI Medical Center in Orange and would get off work around 3 PM, after which she would drive over and park nearly at the front of the parking lot as people were heading home. Over the years this became her nearly-daily routine and especially during Party Gras, she would get to know most of the cast, "adopting" them as her own. It was simply a wonderful time for her. In 1990 the only days she wasn't in the Park, we were driving across the U.S. to Disney World and spent a week there. She passed in 2011 and left an amazing legacy of her love of Disneyland. One of her most precious memories was when she was on a date with the man whom she would marry the same year (my dad) and they were on the Mark Twain, when she saw Walt Disney in the wheelhouse. Dad encouraged his 18 year old date to get Walt's autograph, but she replied "He's enjoying his Kingdom...I won't disturb him.". The marriage lasted only 7 years, resulting in my brother and I, but the memory lasted a lifetime. She did eventually remarry a kind young man whom she met at Disneyland in the early '90s, who has now worked in Disney Casting for over 25 years! Mom passed in 2011 and in honor of her wonderful memories he dropped her wedding band in the Rivers of America below the Mark Twain (where it's likely been scooped up during cleaning or restoration over the years). It only matters that we have memories of her all around the Parks. In 2013 my husband and I brought home a newborn son and I am proud to say that he has become as enamored with Disneyland as Mom! We got him there for his first visit at 18 months (photo ops and a couple rides, then back to the hotel!) And he has now been able to visit somewhere in the range of 20-25 times! Many of those visits were pre-Covid, as I splurged on a pair of SoCal Resident passes during his 4th years, so we could just head up about once a month on a week day. Since then we mix it up with either paid days or as the guest of our Cast Member family. Lucky kid, indeed! What's great is that he has learned the value of Walt's vision and the little knowledge bits passed down from generation to generation, even thought he only has Grandma Phyllis' legacy in stories, swag and souvenirs. In fact, he still has one of the six Mickey Mouse plushes that Mom and I won during the 1990 35th Anniversary year, as well as much of our old ticket books and Party Gras beads and coins. And many of the pins she collected from the early years they were sold and traded. It's wonderful to see these recorded treasures and have my own flood of memories put a smile on my face. Oh my goodness! Thank you so much for sharing these wonderful and heartfelt memories. Responses like yours is one of the main reasons why I started posting all of my old videos. There is a collective memory of Disneyland out there from folks like us who have been going for years with our parents and families. My dad used to take me every year for my birthday and it was a highlight of the year for me. Just spending a day at Disneyland with my dad. Your mother sounds like an absolutely wonderful woman who sacrificed for her family and through that sacrifice showed her love. Thank you, Mark. What a fun video. That's the closest I've ever been to seeing a Disney parade in person; being the sort to head for an E ticket type ride during parades to take full advantage of the shorter wait times. Your video left me longing to see Main Street and New Orleans Square walk-throughs similar to your Tomorrowland video. Do you happen to have either in video?
