Ok, why on earth would they cut this out? Such realistic dialogue. And when have you ever seen a beautiful starlet behave this way in a movie? Adele being a real tomboy, uncouth and yes, even somewhat unattractive. This is pure gold

All of the extra scenes that I've seen that did not make it into the movie, although all were interesting, I believe they were best left out. For example by the end of the movie Adele became almost mythical or with a grand kind of aura and I think that's in part why the film is so popular. This scene for example would have made her feelings too schoolgirl-ish more suited for a television show, instead, the director left it to our senses. The only redeeming reason to add a scene like this one to the film would be just to showcase Adele's amazing talent for emotional range. Imagine this scene juxtaposed to the cafe' scene, complete polar opposites.
@davidwilliams74687 жыл бұрын
It's a wonderful scene, one of the best in the film, up there with the final cafe scene, only at the opposite end of the emotional range. I believe Kechiche cut it because it declares too emphatically that she's gay and he wanted to leave that more ambiguous. Remember the earlier scene in which she tells Valentin about her dismaying experience with Thomas. Note that both scenes take place in the same cafe, only in the previous scene she is screen-right and Valentin is screen-left. Here the reverse is true, the kind of subtle but meaningful little touch a creative artist throws in. In the previous scene, Adele is very, very depressed. "There's something wrong with me," she says, a classic line (at least in the past) from young people not attracted to the opposite gender and sensing they're different from everyone else. But here, after tying up with Emma, she is happy, very excited, even joyous. As I've said, I believe Kechiche realized in the editing that as a result we would see her as without a doubt a lesbian, all ambiguity gone. I do believe, though, that the film indicates she is gay. Kechiche just does so in a subtler way. Note, for instance, that when Emma asks if she has a girlfriend, her response is a kind of "not-on-your-life" ironic wince, which I see as evidence that she finds the very idea of opening herself up again so painful she can't even go there; instead, she talks about having a lot of crazy flings, obviously with males, but in three years nothing that has made her want to go further. That says to me, if I keep this scene in mind, that she is still trying to prove to herself that she is straight.
@SubterraneanChick6 жыл бұрын
I think because it really veered away from Adele's character in the movie. Her character was never this comfortable at any other point in the film. Her inner battle with her sexuality was too prevalent and this scene probably would have stuck out like a sore thumb OR writer would have to rewrite the scenes that followed and described/revealed Adele's apprehensions with living outward and confidently with all the people in her life outside Emma and Emma's lesbian-friendly cocoon of friends and family. Never did she reveal her life and love with Emma to any of friends, family or coworkers, etc.

monica purple My feeling is that Kechiche didn't want to emphasize too much the friendship between Adele and Valentin (after all in the book, Valentin is the one who intermediates the last meeting between Adele and Lea in the café, and it's purposely completely swept from the film) in order to focus on Adele's life with Emma.Nevertheless this could be a legitimate question to ask to Kechiche. Talking about this bonus scene, he told that Adèle was extraordinary/exceptionnal in it. Coming from such a demanding director, you can be sure to view, not only a funny scene but also acting in the highest level.
@rg33888 жыл бұрын
+monica purple Ramakrishna said that given the choice between going to heaven and hearing a lecture about it, people would chose the lecture. Having filmed both, heaven must have sufficed, so the lecture was metaphorically left on the cutting room floor. I find this scene at least as useful as the first sex scene. Also demonstrates one of Adele's talents that helped her get the job. If you don't know the story about the lemon tart, google it.

The movie ended so ambiguously that I wish that Adele found the same happiness that Emma found after they broke up. I think a great ending would've been Emma and Lise at their home and Lise is reading a issue of The New Yorker and she reads an short story of a woman who discovered freedom and love from a blue haired woman who entered her life. After Lise finishes reading the story she leaves and Emma picks it up, reads the header and looks at the byline to reveal that it's from Adele. (Adele had finally fulfilled her talent in writing which Emma suggested during their relationship and is living in NYC where it was a dream of hers to visit one day) Emma smiles, happy for her for pursuing her dream and then the film fades into blue which was used as a symbolic and visual aspect throughout the movie. I know that ending isn't realistic in how the movie's story turned out but it was just an idea I had that I thought would be great to share.
@sashau81426 жыл бұрын
Yes! But to be fair I like that they left it up for interpretation. I don't think Emma ever truly stops loving Adele, I just think she was far too hurt to be with her again. She says she will always feel tenderness for her in the cafe, when Adele tries to use sex to kind of reel Emma back in. But she says she is no longer in love with her. I think Emma found the structure and commitment in Lise (child and all) that she couldn't find in Adele, because Adele was naive, and really still unsure about her life. But in the final scenes, at Emma's art show, one of the patrons she's talking to is talking about how he sees this transition from blue to red in her paintings, but that there's a struggle and the eyes show so much pain and longing still, even in this new "red" life. In a sense i'm glad it didn't have a happy ending, because there was no ending yet. Their lives aren't over, and maybe one day Emma could forgive, and work through it with Adele, when they are older and wiser. Adele shows she isn't the same person she was before, when she acts aloof to every advance thrown at her by others. She cannot think of anything but Emma, and the longing she feels for her. But she leaves, because she realized there's too much pain at this time, even after all those years.

If you want to see a movie that seems to be a documentary, Criterion has just released a newly "remastered" DVD of Ermanno Olmi's The Tree of Wooden Clogs, an Italian film which in 1979 won the Palme d'Or of the Cannes Film Festival, the same prize this film won in 2013. In The Tree of Wooden Clogs you seem to be watching real life in every single minute of its three hours. The realism of it is amazing, especially since every single one of the approximately two dozen characters (children, elderly, newlyweds,middle-aged) is played by an actual peasant who has never acted at all before and who grew up on the same land where the film is set. And, believe it or not (I found it difficult to believe before I learned it was true) the director is a very independent man who wrote, directed, worked the camera, and edited the entire film. And, yes, he used only one camera. (Don't ask me how he did it.) He is so independent that, because the "actors" and the characters they play are all from the Italian province of Bergamo, he refused to dub it in Italian, he had them all speak their native dialect, so that even in Italy there had to be subtitles. (There's an interesting interview with the director, too.)

Although this is a VERY funny scene (I can't get over her face at 2:00, lmao) and very well-acted by both young actors, I agree with Kechiche's choice to leave it out of the final cut. The true power of the film lies in the fact that the two actresses conveyed so many emotions through their expressions, their eyes, their body language and NOT through words, whereas in this scene we actually get to listen to how smitten Adèle was instead of only seeing it. To me at least, the scenes where she hangs out with Emma prior to them having sex for the first time, are pure gold in terms of building the tension and making the viewer realize that both are infatuated with each other and ready to burst. Their lust is heavy and we can understand Adèle feeling every single thing she describes in this scene to Valentin without the need of words.

Leon Mane well 15 in France isn’t the same as being 15 in the US, teenagers are treated a little bit more adult there.

There's no understanding why directors ever cut things out of films. For the viewer these scenes seem fine. But we are not filmmakers. They may know more than we do or the producer or distributor wanted the film to be shorter. Anyway this is one scene which they can show on KZbin. A lot of the other scenes maybe not. In any case this actress amazes me.
