Here's a theory I've had. Im kinda glad I never suggested it to Sawtooth although I wanted to. So I think Luster Dawn might be daughter of Sunburst and Moondancer. She's pretty repulsive towards friendship, wants to study independently, is also magically talented just like Moondancer. Her coat color could have came from her mother's mane. Also I think Moondancer and Sunburst have cute dynamic. Both are nerdy, socially awkward, have trouble reconnecting with old friends, have glasses, she's moon, he's sun. It would make sense for their daughter to be named Dawn. Also, it would explain why Spike doesn't know her.

The reason why I still think starlight is lusters mother is beacause when everyone walks into the school of friendship, you see how starlight excitedly waves at luster and smiles… I feel like only a mother would do that. And because where was Trixie? If trixie and sunburst had a child then wouldn’t they be together? Edit: I didn’t say this earlier bc I didn’t think I needed to , now I think I do tho lol. In the scene that they walk into the school in, you can actually see trixie walking around the corner. If sunburst and trixie worked at the same school, why aren’t they hanging out with each other or talking with each other?

Could just be that, outside of Luster being Twilight's student, Starlight is her secondary mentor. I mean, Twilight is ruling Equestria and wouldn't have constant time for Luster. Maybe she just learns stuff from Starlight as well. On top of that, it could also just hint to her being Trixie's kid since Starlight and Trixie are best friends and Luster would develop a close relationship with her because of that, especially if she is the child of both Trixie AND Sunburst. I wouldn't be surprised if Luster even calls Starlight auntie if she is the best friend of both her parents. And Trixie not being around isn't THAT surprising. I can't really see her being a hands on mom with a grown daughter that studies independently under Twilight. Surely once Luster went off old enough on her own Trixie would still be travelling around. Kind of like how Rarity's parents don't always come see her often. Edit: Just realized we literally see Trixie in a scene waving at them in the school lol. So she is around, just shown as a background for the final epi.

They probably just do it because it sounded right and the company probably went and put starlight and sunburst together because it was a popular ship. Your reason does seem more understandable tho. Could just mean she spends a lot of time around Starlight. I mean, if Trixie is Luster's mother, it stands to reason that Luster spent a lot of time around the only best friends she had. I could even see Trixie being a bit absentee as a mother and leaving Luster with Starlight often. Idk, I just think it would be nicer if Luster is Trixie's child who simply developed mannerisms from her "auntie" Starlight. It also explains Spike being skeptical of Luster being Twilight's top student. It isn't that he didn't know her, it was that he is surprised a child of Trixie actually has enough magical ability to become a top student. Considering the past relationship Twilight had with Trixie is isn't farfetched for Spike to make a joke like that because of how shocking it is that Trixie's kid could be prodigal compared to her mother. Like, why would Luster being top student be a surprise if she were Starlight and Sunburst's kid. That would just make sense given how strong Starlight is and magically intellectual Sunburst is. There has to be some reason considering Luster's parents on why her being magically gifted is a surprise. Would only make sense if one of those parents has a poorer magical reputation, or ironic relationship with Twilight, which pretty clearly spells Trixie.

The lighter streaks in her hair could also be explained by Trixie having those lighter streaks. Starlight nor Moondancer have those light streaks and she couldn't have gotten them from sunburst. (Tho starlights dad did have lighter streaks if I remember correctly tho I'm not sure if it's from age or if he always had them.)

Here a theory: If Luster Dawn really not Starlight’s daughter, yea. It make sense that Spike didn’t known Luster. (I will talk about if Starlight is actually Luster’s mom later) However. If Trixie is Luster’s mom. It make sense 50% for me… Because Trixie look like kinda showed a lot of magic show, so she could has average Magic abilities. But Luster seem to *NOT* has any good magic abilities… that not make sense… (expect in case she doesn’t show us) Well… Sunburst actually make sense for me if he is really Luster’s father. Could explain Trixie being her mother honestly. Hear me out, Trixie may have not been all that great making sure Luster socialized with anyone but Starlight and Sunburst. I mean, she may have had Luster traveling around with her, unable to make proper bonds with others. Children who are forced to travel a lot typically have issues socializing, so it would make sense. Plus, how do y'all explain Luster being "sent" to Ponyville as if she never lived there before? You'd think she'd be more familiar with the place with Stalight as her mother, so why send her there as if she wasn't more familiar with Ponyville. And yes, Starlight would never let her child become anti-friendship, meanwhile I don't even think Sunburst would be that strict about it, much less Trixie who is more of a loner. It would definitely make more sense for Trixie to not bring Luster to Ponyville that often, if at all, and to have not pushed for Luster's social skills. Just saying.

Here's my theory: I don't think that Starlight and Sunburst are Luster Dawn's parents because if you look closely to the (background) students in the school of friendship you can find a pony that is actually very similar to Luster dawn, she almost looks like Luster Dawn just a bit darker, so I think that, that one student in the school of Friendship is Luster Dawns mother

I think this is fun food for thought, considering they’re not really going to touch back on this since that part of the series is over. So I think it’s a fun idea to speculate who her parents could be. I like the idea of starlight because their color schemes match but I love the idea of Trixie too. I think that is more likely but it’s fun nonetheless.

obviously, Luster dawn was designed to mirror Twilight in the beginning of the show. so she's probably not from ponyville (or twilight will probably said "sent you BACK to ponyville"). but both sunburst and starlight lived in ponyville. Plus, I think starlight and sunburst do appreciate the value of friendship a lot so they will probably teach their child the magic of friendship since young, thus their child can't look down at friendship. so I think, Luster dawn is probably just a random character
