Five years ago, when I wasn't living in Delhi, I used to think this wasn't my problem. I believed it was a region-specific issue that didn't affect me. However, I haven't seen the sun for the past two weeks, and the air quality index (AQI) has exceeded 2000 in some parts of Delhi. I am feeling short of breath, my eyes are red, and I'm struggling to breathe. All of this has happened because we, including politicians and officials, thought this wasn't our problem.

Even though you say it is a capital punishment, the severity of punishment is far greater on the poor than the rich and powerful. Rich can afford to install expensive air purifiers in every room in their house, own expensive BS 6 compliant cars and engage others go out to get the job done. The poor can hardly afford to even light their stove if they can't go out to work. Nature and the elements treat the rich and poor the same but the impact is vastly different.

Getting to this level of pollution is also a long term process. The big question is where was the leadership to avoid this as the air was gradually getting worse. Having China as an example is even worse because they should know to prioritize avoid the same mistakes for their citizens

Currently Delhi has imposed a significant ban on the use of vehicles due to high air pollution. Isn't it very necessary for the Punjab government to create sufficient awareness among the rural farmers who are the cause of the problem?
@ThereisnoplacelikeКүн бұрын
The main source which is stubble burning has to be stopped, the government officials should understand the challenges that these farmers faces here and should help them find an alternative eco friendly way of doing it. May be some financial helps to implement such eco friendly alternative would also help. The next is improving eco friendly public transport (which they will never do to help automotive manufacturers) The main concern is why is government officials not working on this?

Poor farmers are bearing the brunt as the cause for all of Delhi's current air pollution troubles. Mind you our farmers had been following stubble burning as a sustainable and economic way of farm management for centuries. But Delhi's air pollution is a recent phenomenon. So who is the real culprit? It's the petrol and diesel guzzling cars and other transport vehicles on Delhi's roads that have exploded in numbers in recent years. The rich don't want to change their lifestyle but want the poor farmers to give up their traditional practice so that the rich can continue their wasteful lifestyles.

The U.S. also suffered similarly with incinerators, oil/gas until 1965 -large cities like Ny, Detroit were completely unlivable-especially for those in military members deployed from the mid west or western states, which this issue put into place the Environment Protection Act which is why mandates of limitations on emissions & monitoring them, Including vehicles, use of LPG or alt source fuel for cooking like electric(+via solar) became more popular. This appear least helped with what we can do, when it comes to wildfires.. still an issue but better than where we were 70 yrs ago!
