The Delhi Mumbai Expressway will be the longest expressway in India, enhancing connectivity between Delhi and Mumbai. This 1350-kilometer, eight-lane greenfield expressway is being developed at a whopping cost of ₹90,000 crores! It not only links Delhi and Mumbai but also connects various urban centers like Faridabad, Sona, and Jawaharlal Nehru Port in Mumbai.
The expressway passes through five states: Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra. It improves connectivity to economic hubs such as Jaipur and Kishangarh. The project, envisioned under the Honorable Prime Minister’s 'New India' vision, was kick-started in 2018, with the foundation stone laid on March 9, 2019.
Out of the 1350 kilometers, contracts for more than 1000 kilometers have already been awarded, and construction is actively underway on 680 kilometers of the expressway. The Delhi-Dosa section, part of the Delhi-Jaipur Expressway, and the Vadodara-Kaleshwar section, which connects Vadodara to Baruch, are likely to open by November 2021. The entire expressway is planned to be completed by January 2023.
The new expressway is expected to halve the travel time between Delhi and Mumbai from nearly 24 hours to just 12 hours, reducing the distance by 130 kilometers. This will save over 32 crore liters of fuel annually and cut CO2 emissions by 85 kilograms, equivalent to planting four crore trees. 15 lakh trees are planned to be planted along the highway, demonstrating NHAI’s commitment to environmental conservation.
Minimizing environmental and wildlife impact has been a key priority. The Delhi Mumbai Expressway will be the first in Asia, and only the second in the world, to feature animal overpasses for unrestricted wildlife movement. It includes three animal underpasses and five overpasses with a combined length of seven kilometers.
The expressway will also feature an iconic eight-lane tunnel through the Makundra sanctuary, ensuring minimal disturbance to the endangered fauna in the region. The project is a true engineering marvel, requiring over five lakh tons of steel and 50 crore cubic meters of earth to be moved, equivalent to 60 lakh truck trips!
Another unique aspect of the expressway is the setup of 92 wayside amenities to enhance user convenience and safety. These amenities will include petrol pumps, motels, rest areas, restaurants, shops, and even helipads for emergency evacuations.
This expressway is set to be one of the longest in the world, completed in a record time of five years from conceptualization to completion. In comparison, similar large-scale projects like the Trans-Java road in Indonesia and the Shinto Mai Expressway in Japan took decades to complete.
This impressive feat has been achieved through focused program management under the guidance of Honorable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and Honorable Minister Shri Nitin Gadkari. The key challenges during pre-construction included extensive land acquisition and timely clearances, which were efficiently managed using advanced technologies such as LiDAR, GPR, and drone-based surveys.
The expressway traverses diverse terrains, including forests, arid lands, mountains, and rivers. Perpetual pavement design has been adopted for the Delhi-Vadodara section, while rigid pavement design is used for the Vadodara-Mumbai section to ensure longevity.
