That ship has sailed!😂 I recently decluttered and sold everything I didn’t like. Now I love everything I own. I will be 75 years old on Saturday. I have more than I can possibly use in what’s left of my lifetime. 😂😂 I have switched to sniffing in store or buying travel sprays for the time being. I don’t think that will change anytime soon. Great video.

Two very good and substantive points. My love for perfume should not become my weakness for others to exploit to the point that it becomes intolerable. There's no justification for these prices except plain old greed. The art suffers too and things soon spiral down. Very good video without being unnecessarily lengthy and repetitive. Would like to hear more influencers speak up on this issue. Thank you once again

I'm glad that more people are talking about this, and I really found your thoughts comparable to my own. I too am shocked by the prices of new releases. Even samples are as expensive now as travel sizes used to be, it's crazy! I think you're right too that as long as people are buying them, the prices will unfortunately go higher. The sheer volume of new releases and the astronomical prices is totally overwhelming to me and has also made me feel really rebellious. To maintain my sanity I go on no buys for several months where I will just pull from my collection. I have created a reasonable budget and have slowed down my purchases. When I do purchase I have taken to buying 1 oz. or smaller bottles of fragrance or body mists to stay within that budget. I've also been content with buying less expensive dupes and more affordable brands and even used bottles of older perfumes that are out of "trend" - it doesn't bother me at all to do this anymore, in fact I look at it as a fun challenge. I consider it my way of protesting and pushing back on overconsumption, overspending and inflation and it gives me a feeling of satisfaction that I can still have my cake and eat it too :) I follow some other fragrance youtubers that talk mostly about more affordable older fragrances and rediscovering these kinds of perfumes has been a real blast. Again, I totally hear you and appreciate you talking about your journey at this point through the world of perfumery.

I may like the IDEA of lemon cake, as in Akro Bake, but I don’t want to smell like it or walk around with that smell. Purchasing even small samples can add up cost wise, especially if wanting to avoid shipping costs. I have decided to take a 6 month break and just enjoy everything I have. I used to have a pretty bad habit of just buying perfumes on a whim and then not actually wearing them because i didn't love them and in turn just wasting my money. So i've set myself some rules to not do that anymore. For example, i won't buy any perfume over 100 bucks. No matter which one it is, i just can't justify paying that much for a fragrance. Now i mostly buy my perfumes from discount stores. I've also gotten a little display thingy which fits about 12 perfumes and i've told myself i can only get a new perfume if i have room for it. So if my display is full, i'll have to wait until i've finished a fragrance to buy a new one. That way i won't just go and buy perfumes impulsively. I test them out first, before actually committing to a bottle.

I hear you. I look far & wide for inexpensive perfumes that smell great. Today I’m wearing First Snow. $20.00 per bottle. It did have to macerate for about 6 weeks. That’s okay. I bought 2 nicer perfumes this year that I really wanted but they are travel size. That will do.

My problem is all the opposite; I see them all as unique, with very different blends. As such, I buy many samples before splurging. But that adds up to, of course. lol

I’ve gotten to the point where I won’t bother with middle eastern “cheapies” anymore because, while many are amazing, and since a lot of them are imitating something, I’d rather take my time to save up for the real thing and enjoy the experience of owning a small luxury in my pretty modest life. I should point out that I don’t aim to buy brands like Fragrance du Bois or Tom Ford private collection. They can range from $500 and up per bottle and that’s just not something I can justify for my lifestyle. Power to anyone who can afford it though.

I’m more discerning even about travel sizes now. If I can sniff first at the store I do it. I saved myself a bunch of money by eliminating wishlist items by sniffing at the counter. And a few times a year I buy a batch of samples and decants. And I’ve noticed that what i am testing is enjoyable but I have already got something I prefer for certain notes - like you. I’m trying to find joy in decluttering now things that are not my favorites. I find it really difficult.
@e.starling1414 ай бұрын
I also stopped buying as many perfumes this year. (Though I normally like to buy small decants and travel size.) But part of the reason is that I already have so much perfume I need to be using, and the other of course is the cost. It’s too expensive to be buying all the time. But like you, my favorite part is trying new perfumes. And i feel your pain with being at a store and wanting to test different scents without being bothered. lol. It’s like look, I know what I’m doing here, you can help someone else, I promise I’m good. Lol. But since I’ve stopped buying I’ve used up a bunch of decants and samples. Of course they tend to be my favs. So that part sucks. But the point is I’m using them and enjoying them. Gosh I just remembered I used up the last of Sublime Vanille by Creed. I had a 10ml decent and it’s one of my all time favorite vanilla perfumes. And so freaking expensive!!!! Anyway I actually did buy 2 samples a couple wks ago. (The first break of my no buy this year.). Both are from the brand Kerosene , and one came out last year and the other just came out. The first is called Winter of ‘99. It’s got molasses, nutmeg, woods and vanilla. It’s really nice. Definitely saving it to wear during colder months though. Very spicy, cozy sweet scent. Maybe a little similar to Ginger Biscuit. The other is their newest one called “Promises, Promises”, and I believe they said it was named this because he had been promising fans he’d come out with a vanilla dominant perfume. The notes are vanilla, amber and musk. And yes , it’s heavenly!! Everything I hoped it would be. Of course I love all 3 notes so I was immediately sold when I saw this perfume explained. I highly recommend it if you can get it there. Anyway thanks for the video and your input. 😊

Before last year, I had just 1 main fragrance and a few others for variety. I would only replace once used up. Then I went overboard and there's now more than I can use in my lifetime. Lots of unopened stuff, lightly used samples etc. Wish I didn't waste so much $$$. Am slowly downsizing and barely buying. I reckon it will be more joyful to have a small but well used collection. I don't want back ups anymore. It only makes sense if you love a scent so much, you're using it very often. Otherwise you'll end up with boxes you never touch. Can't bring these with you, when your time's up. Even though it is sad to run out of a cherished fragrance which then gets discontinued, you will be fine. Really. There's other loves in your collection. As far as possible, I'll focus on smaller bottles and decants.

Thank you for the video! I find your point of view very close to mine. In my country the retail prices are even more ridiculous, luckily I have found an indie craft perfumer and he sells his works in small package too, like 3 ml, so it's easy to collect a lot of aroma types on a budget. I'm sure there are indie craft creators where you live, too! I agree that at some point the new impressions are hard to find but you can dive deeper into this hobby, have a journal, study the chemistry and botany background a little. There's still a lot to explore! They didn't use to have tons of flankers back in the twentieth century, it's only capitalist races for money now, a flanker every year even there's nothing much to change or add. Sampling perfumes in the shop is great, and sometimes you can even love a perfume from afar, spraying your hand once in a while when you go past that shop. It's probably the same amount of attention I would give that perfume if it were in my collection, given how vast it is.

Before I would do 95% of blind buy because the perfume was affordable, nowadays even the travel size is a lot money for a 10ml...I have to adapt to the new reality, I'll go to store and if doesn't have I'll buy a sample or a discovery set before I commit...if the price continues getting higher and higher just a very small group will be able to purchase, I can't justify pay over $200 in 50ml bottle does matter if is niche or design I won't pay

Hey Arlene, I agree with many things you have mentioned. Spraying from a sample it does not feel the same when from a bottle, I agree. Also from many scents I can only get a dabber sample, which is not like spraying... I wonder if it compromises the performance of a scent, because I think it can.... when you buy a lot of samples and decants adding transportation costs it can add up to quite a lot of money, too. Decants may evaporate faster than the original samples, but unfortunately department stores not always able to give you samples for free. Also when I visit niche stores, the staff may not like if I handle the bottle myself maybe fearing of breaking and dropping it or simply due to hygienic reasons. But still I can get super exited when I can hold a bottle of and smell a new scent that I have not before, without actually buying it :)

I’m doing the same just keeping the perfumes I love and not buying more. I need to enjoy what I have right now, plus too expensive and designers are coming up intense, elixir, le parfum etc 🤷♀️ and not lasting power at all in many brands. You’re being smart A 👍🏻👌🏻

Plus, all the new perfumes have new chemicals. Chemicals that a good percentage of us are anosmic to, to some degree. I think I am going to try to cut back on perfumes too

I’m into mostly body mist from bath and body works , Victoria secret and some celebrity perfumes find most designer perfumes too over powering which I’m glad as body mist are so much cheaper makes the interest affordable

Love this video. Reminder to self. Its becoming a super expensive hobby for me. 😢 They're other things to use money for and what I have now can take me 3 - 5 years. Theyll be become OG formula/vintage 😅

Hi Arlene ❤ same here: too much redundancy and too expensive. Hard to get impressed for me: whether it be designer or niche. Things need to improve in this market 😅

I totally get it, Arlene! I probably will never stop buying perfume-but I have slowed down quite a bit. I enjoy saving my money vs. spending hundreds of dollars each month on fragrances. Currently, I’m trying to use up and sell the 200 plus fragrances I own. I’m still buying fragrances, but I’ve become extremely picky. The last perfume I bought was sunshine woman by amouge about 3 weeks ago!

Just when I'm tired of flankers though, they come out w something I absolutely love; maybe even more than the OG. Like Black Opium Over Red. 😍

Thank you for this video! I love perfume but during covid I bought loads of perfumes instead of investing. But I learnt my lesson, still buying but way less. Investing in the stock market and crypto is more important. 😊😊😊

Yes, I've definitely slowed down. It's getting too expensive. Buying from resellers seems to be the direction I'm going, but some of them are kind of proud with their prices. I ran across a guy selling a 2019 discontinued Killian fragrance for $600.00. Nevermind the fact its discontinued but the juice is at least 5 years old at this point and who knows how it was stored. I PM'd him so hopefully he takes my advice.

The best perfumes ever made- *have already been made* by the classic haute parfumerie houses in France. Everything else is a spin on the classics. Niche perfumes are obscenely priced, and even houses like Chanel now think that they can sell us water for $800 under their «Exclusif» line. Enough is enough.

Never commented on yt, but it's a start🎉. I worked for a online perfumery for 5 years, since 2018, so i just wonder why nobody actually tells the truth. Last ok ish designer perfumes were la belle and good girl- persistence wise . After..the fun started .. chemicals being banned- one relevant example - butylphenyl methylpropanal aka lilial, so funny remembering dior and sarantis trying to convince us at trainings that perfumes are still the same when obviously they are not. And team leaders in the stores therehening the minimum wage employees that it's their fault if customers are not convinced that nothing changed😂. So yeah..older perfumes are the best.

I totally agree. My local SDM has all their scents locked up and you have to ask to smell perfumes. It’s like pulling teeth just to smell one or two. I’ve had sales people who won’t even let me hold the bottle and give me one tiny spray. It’s a real turn off. So I rarely go there anymore.

Bought a house end of 2023, moved in this januari and got pregnant this may so that did it for me 🤣 I also get sick of too much perfume now with the hormones. I also got the declutter/nesting bug already so I went from 50 scents to maybe 20 and I'm not getting new ones anytime soon.

Since I lost my job, I have slowed down and yeah the prices are much higher than before. I still have lots I want to discover and buy, I get it. You made good points here. I would add that the new interest of a particular group of consumers in perfumery made new perfumes a bit mediocre. Not simple, light and elegant perfumes, just blah and boring. Great video 🎉🎉

We should be able to go testing together because I also don’t like to be watched by the salesperson! Anyways that would be fun to sniff and discuss the perfumes. But I am afraid that we don‘t live near enough to each other! Regards from Switzerland!🇨🇭

Yeah I'm also inconfortable when I'm sampling stuff and some pushy seller is trying to... make me try something... At first I would fall for it... And sadly once you've put a flagrance on yourself already it kinda ruins the sampling process for other perfumes. Some of those employee really try to be helpful, some others feel like they want to drive you out. As in you're not looking like you're going to buy anything anyway and you're an hindrance for business. Luckily those cases are rare. In general people in those store, especially niche related places have a lot of time on their hands and most of the time they just want to have a nice chat.

Yes, I have absolutely slowed down on buying fragrances. I think I have more fragrances than I could hope to use up in the 35 years of life I have (hopefully) remaining. Something would have to be extremely special for me to want to buy it...but then, I do maintain a wishlist and I do participate in the Perfume Guy's Scent Club so that I can try out new perfumes. I have gotten on a kick of trying to find/sample vintage fragrances that I missed the "first time around", but it's kind of spotty. I also frequent the perfume counters when I can. It never hurts and I like it. I do check out things from Bath and Body Works. I have a decent collection of assorted body mists, lotions, and body wash, but again, it has to be pretty extraordinary--or a missing item--for me to stock up.
