@@greenAbbot Yeah, so? Beats the ever-lovin' f^^^ out of "gangstas and hos." Freaking 1989 was the early days of taking rap seriously, and this opened up the floodgates to more complex stuff. Then idiots tanked it by turning it into a cultural abomination that was violent and misogynistic. Yeah, "give us more of that"? It's a nice, light, fun little song, which is why it was a success. Deep? No. Pop songs rarely are, especially if successful. There are exceptions, and yeah, this one wasn't. It was also significant, in that it was part of the endless process of clearing out the deadwood, like Girl Groups in the early 60s, Disco in the late 70s, and Hip Hop in the 80s-90s -- each of them clearing out the musical deadwood that had built up, for the "next major sound", e.g., The British Invasion, New Wave, and Grunge, respectively. We need a new such, but, radio having lost its power, that cycle is broken.

I like old skool originals rap like eazy muthapuckin e, ice cube, tupac and biggie. And i also like older music than that. I have a wide variety of favorites. A WIDE variety. Flea said in an interview the bass line he wrote ended up being a major melody of the song. He didn't get song writing credit. The record company sold millions from this #1 hit and all he got was $200 bucks but he learned from it.

Just because it's not using slurs doesn't mean it's respectful. There's a whole verse about how all girls are materialistic and only care about guys for their money 😂 I'm not even saying the song is bad or anything, but less sexist than others =/= not sexist. We can just look back now and see if attitudes towards women have changed since the 80s.
