Delilah knows far more than she leads on, and I can prove it. She is keeping so many secrets from Henry that many players completely miss and dislike the games ending as a result. Let's explain the ending to Firewatch.

I also found it weird how Delilah was being very quiet and barely responded to Henry reporting anything in Ned's bunker, given that she always responds back at any observation.

I know this video is old af but Delilah makes a remark when you first enter the cave which hints towards her already knowing about Brain being down there, it was something like 'I don't wanna lose anyone else down there' but in a kind of joking matter, maybe this was foreshadowing? Food for thought.

Yeah, in real life. Not in games. Which are supposed to be, ya know, fun, or intriguing. This game was so bland and pointless that I am actually angry I wasted my time on it thinking it would eventually pay off with an interesting story. Literally nothing you do in this game actually matters. Nothing intriguing in this story was actually taken advantage of in the end. It all just culminates in lazy, uninspired, wasted potential under the guise of being ‘artsy’ and pseudo-intellectual. The type of thing people have to convince themselves they love to feel cultured.

I think I’ve noticed something very important about this game. Throughout the entire plot you never see an actual face. Henry could be going insane from this, which makes him for susceptible to manipulation. When you enter Wapiti Station, you can see on the report on Henry is that he can be manipulated very easily. This could also mean that Delilah has lied a lot more than we already think.
@DatThiccGinger

I think thats more of a biproduct of game developement. Graphics often can date your game to feel older if they don't look perfectly stylized. This is the same reason you can't see the face of the firefighter at the very end. I would agree it help maintain immersion with the paranoia of the player being alone but feeling the opposite.
@mortache

@@DatThiccGinger I mean yes from a mechanical PoV it makes sense but it's likely that the design of the game has been made keeping it in mind. the ending is pretty devastating really, first time I saw this I was like so hyped up by the mysteries and then suddenly we found bryans body and at this point I thought "wow ... all these crazy conspiracy theories and at the bottom of them its just a dead kid ..." a cold shock, no more excitement at this point, only harsh reality. and after that and at the end, to learn that Ned was behind everything ... by going through this a 2nd time I learned that you can easily notice that at wapiti station, henry gets so paranoid about the researchers notes there, but when you keep a cold head its very clear they were actually watching animals, not to mention we can find a dead Elk with this tracking collar. its a story about responsibility, the whole job is about being responsible, but every charakter in it, henry, ned and delilah ran away from their problems, ned taken it to the extreme and as henry we have at the end no choice but to go back to our own harsh reality, no mysteries, no dark secrets, no stranger danger, just our beloved wife dying from alzheimers

like a cold bucket of water waking you up to reality. It's not bigfoot, or aliens, or the boogeyman. It's just a complicated, dark, sad, unfair world we inhabit. Sometimes we can find someone to rub up against next to and make sparks with, and that eases the burden, the chill, if just for a little. But then we die. We all die eventually, some tragically sooner than others, some tragically later than others, but still this truth rings true, this horrible truth that surrounds us so frequently it's become routine, easy to ignore; to block out. To escape. But there is no escaping life. And there is no escaping death. "Get used to disappointment." Westley, "The Princess Bride"

I feel I need to point this out, if you go into the free play mode, Henry stayed at the park but Delilah isn’t to be heard of, and we heard her before say she probably won’t come back so that makes sense. I got something about them and it involves the "Figure" (2:30). There's one letter from Ron to Dave (the one that dates 6-16-86) that says: "I went up to check out the new guy (at Two Forks) and heard him talking to himself (more than usual for LOs) so I figured I'd stay away.[...]" So the "figure" may be Ron, since it happens in the beginning of the game. Idk, just a thought.
@Ruminations09
@Ruminations09 7 жыл бұрын
+Woods No, the figure is definitely Ned. On the last day, Ned's recording confirms that he was the one that Henry ran into. Plus, Delilah said that neither Ron nor Dave were working that summer, so neither of them would have even been in the park. I'm pretty sure that the person Ron was talking about was Ned because Ned was the person stationed at Two Forks before Henry was there. Also, your own comment disproves this theory. You said that the letter was dated 6-16-86, but the game takes place in '89, which is 3 years later.

While your proof that Delilah was in fact a lier, I believe you have fallen under the game's effects. The game is about paranoia, and then realizing what everything actually IS. The ending is a kick in the nuts because it's telling you that you should focus on what the game IS, annd not what it COULD BE. There aren't any mysteries, it's just an ashamed parent trying to hide his son's death. The game literally is about making you believe things that never got mentioned, and starts making you believe things are not real, such as Delilah.

Hi Cap. I am still surprised that people actually like Delilah. There are so many, many reasons to dislike her actions. Not only her negligence with Brian the child, but her continued criminal negligence, shown to us very early in the story when she avoids telling the Police about the ripped up campsite of two girls, when parents have reported two girls missing in that area - and yet it is her job, her responsibility! The other biggie IMO is her seducing Henry, who is a scared, depressed and confused husband, with a sick suffering wife. She takes advantage of Henry, constantly asking deep personal questions then coyly stating 'I don't mean to pry'. These types of behaviours make me run the other way... But I seem to be a minority?
@rogerdodger1984

The Mudpit Why would she say anything about the girls when she ends up being right about them to begin with? They were fine. Also she's not seducing, she's flirting. They never even met. Plus it's possible to flirt back with her so what's the big deal? Weird reason to not like her honestly.
@themudpit621
@themudpit621 7 жыл бұрын
Roger Fink you are an example of the people that surprise me. Willingly turning a blind eye to the obvious. Your first sentence is, pardon me, ludicrous. They weren't fine, they were stranded in a jail. She has no crystal ball. The girls were reported missing by their parents, she had information that could have led to them being found, and she didn't even bother to report it, and somehow because the girls were eventually found, and just stranded in jail that makes it all OK for her to be negligent - for her to be too lazy to make a call? You don't know who they were locked up with. However, when you have daughters you'll change your mind on that I'll wager. Then you say that flirting with married people is OK in your book - well, that's for you to decide, that is less surprising (sadly), but personally I don't agree that messing with his mind is somehow better than messing with his nether regions. She'd be more likable if she showed more respect for him and his awful situation and didn't mess with him at all. When bosses make advances toward workers in the workplace, it's usually called by a different name...
@rogerdodger1984
@rogerdodger1984 7 жыл бұрын
The Mudpit get off your high horse. It's not ludicrous simply because you disagree. I'm not convinced you even played the game because she did NOT have any info, nor did you, as to where the girls were. I trusted her at her job more than I trust you to tell me what her job was since you can't even remember details. Furthermore, they were in the wilderness for quite a long time, just them mostly, and your judgements on what people would, or wouldn't do, seem naive at best. Pompous at worst. You're the kind of person that boasts they would always do the right thing having never been in a situation to know one way or the other. I think Delilah knew about Ned, but not about Brian’s death. I think she couldn’t stand to meet Henry at the end despite any feelings she felt for him because in the end she found out the truth of her arrangement with Ned was based on a lie, and she couldn’t have anything real with Henry because their own relationship, whatever it was, was built on a lie. And I think she knew if she ever met Henry that he would see through her. There were so many times Henry asked some difficult questions and was suspicious or confused about her reasoning. It was all she could do to misdirect, deflect, and joke to hide the truth over a VHF hand-held radio. I think the player gets to see everything in hindsight much like Henry would in the aftermath of the game’s narrative. He wasn’t dumb or naive or paranoid, he was just in a bad place emotionally and mentally, and Delilah was a welcome distraction from the harsh realities of life. He did take the job because he was looking to get away and live some adventure after all. There’s so much to say about it. I just wish there were more games like it.

You make good points but I disagree with the supposed overheard conversation with Ned at 4:06 in the video. Delilah had mentioned she was in contact with other watch stations and later on she admits that she covered for Henry and his destroying the girl's stereo. If you look at the conversation again you could say she was talking to another outpost and explaining that Henry doesn't know where the girls are and that if anything changes, if they find bodies or find more clues, she'll let him know but right now things aren't looking good for Henry. That would also explain why she told Henry it was work stuff, she didn't want to let on that they were looking into him. This game seems to be a lot about what people infer from partial evidence and how everything can look damning but is actually easily explained. That's my opinion though.

Delila definitely knew about Wapiti station, just look at the "two orcs" map that we find in the right drawer of the watchtower desk. Looking up to the left, at the station location we can clearly see that Brian has marked "iron fortress". So that station must have been there for at least 3 years, and Ned never noticed on his watch? And the firewatches that came in the following years? So Delila definitely knew about the station and the fence, despite the fact that she pretended nothing had happened for the duration of the game.

I really enjoy watching all the "Firewatch" conspiracy videos, but I've yet to be convinced by any of them. I think the same plot device that drives the "Firewatch" story also drives this explanation video: the lies/stories we tell ourselves when facts are sparse and paranoid conspiracy creeps in. Simple explanations are overlooked in favor of the dramatic to feed our sense of self-importance and escape what can sometimes be a very lousy, lonely, and "unfair" existence. I'm convinced the story is exactly what it appeared to be: a series of misunderstood events told through the lenses of flawed people under the sometimes-crushing duress of everyday life. That punch in the gut you feel at the end is the realization that facing the reality of life can be far worse than any conspiratorial fantasy. I also think classifying "Firewatch" as a "game" is doing it a disservice. A "game", by definition, implies there is a "goal" waiting to be won by the player. The only "goal" belonged to the developers: manipulate the player into "becoming" Henry through dialog choices reflective of their own personality and desires. You were never really in control of Henry's (your) story... only how you perceived it. The story may be completely linear and fixed in its delivery, but I suspect every player's interpretation of Henry is uniquely their own... my ending was not your ending even though we watched the same cut-scene. "Firewatch" managed something for me no other game has even come close to achieving... I didn't think twice about the game's story as the credits rolled, I thought about my own.

Honestly couldn't agree better myself. You said exactly my thoughts. This game makes everything seem like a big mystery, constantly leading you on to some even bigger reveal? But it's not. It's real life. I think that's why a lot of people hated the ending. Because it let them down, with their theories and with Delilah. But I think that's exactly what Henry felt too. And I think this emotional connection between the 2 is what the devs were going for. We could have gotten a big scooby doo reveal, and seen Delilah and flew back home happy. But we didn't. The fun is over, and we return back into a dark reality. It's sad. As beautiful as it is ugly.

Maybe in denial and not wanting to see his sons dead body. Maybe he couldn't climb down to that point and find it, since Henry did open up some closed off passages with his axe. Can't say for sure. Some people just don't care about proper burial, like Ned said he "didn't see the point of putting him in the ground". My two guesses were either she found out Ned was living there long after he had gone missing and she didn't want to out him as it would make her look really bad. Love this theory. For me, I thought this story was going in a completely different direction that involved the Wife, Dementia and a BIG reveal. -- Henry finds clues that lead him to discovering that he was actually the one with Dementia all along and Dalilah was his wife (who could keep an eye on him most of the time in what could have been a simple job). Our whole prologue was us "choosing" our false dementia memories and Dalilah was playing along when we would talk to her about "Jules". Perhaps it was all a giant research study on Dementia and Ned was ex-military security to help keep an eye on you by following you when you were out of the tower because of such an uncontrolled environment. Perhaps a lot of things that occurred were hallucinations and certain items triggered different ones - answers I expected to find at Wapiti Station or in the damn books I kept finding about the same character in situations I continually tried applying to Henry's current situation. My grandfather died from Lewy Body dementia the first day I left to be a Ranger for a Boy Scout camp after being his caregiver up to that point (yeah the tiki pole, bear trap and cots were spot on in this game). He would hallucinate, hide things and be very paranoid. Because of this my mind was biased in thinking the story would revolve around the dementia aspect, especially when the paranoia started. I mean what a specific thing for Henry's wife to have and I don't see any theories connecting that? So the ending was frustrating at first. I had thought that if my theory wasn't correct, then perhaps it was at least about how Nature allows you to heal, like it did me; that it would allow Henry to move on (though it didn't provide much closure with his wife prior to being there), and that Henry would find growth with Dalilah. I mean at one point your freaking wedding ring is off your finger and on the counter automatically, even in my first playthrough where I didn't flirt with D. Yet there's no dialogue options that make Henry seem remotely interested in talking about his wife in order for her to be a primary motivator for any of it. Perhaps that's why it felt frustrating, they started the game with those facts about his life, even let you choose...and get attached to a character you never met who mentally leaves you before getting you attached to a character you never meet who then leaves you. There's something there.

The ending is not bad story telling. It's simply a game about people and how they cope with trauma in isolation. The ending is not bad it's real. Many times people don't ressolve to what they need immediately. Summer flings are just that and when reality sets back in you learn more about the people you've built a relationship with. People mistake a bad ending with a satisfying ending.

*All in all, I think it is a great theory, and you make some interesting points, however I stand by the opinion that a lot of what happens in this game happens with the purpose of making you suspicious of these kind of things, making you come up with these kinds of theories, and all around getting you wound up over what ends up being absolutely nothing at all. On that note, I would like to make a few counterpoints. Note that this is still my opinion, and I still think this a great and fascinating theory that has some good points.* (Regarding the beginning of the video) I believe you are right there, though I kind of always figured that the communication line cutting and the vandalism was Ned, especially since the sheets happened to be conveniently where Ned tore up their camp, and since it was kind of physically impossible for the girls to get to Henry's lookout before he did. (did *anyone* actually believe it wasn't Ned who tore up the camp?) As for the theory about Delilah talking to Ned when you overhear the call on the radio, I agree it does sound kind of suspicious but to be honest it really seemed like bait for suspicion. Remember: A lot of what happens in this game is kind of getting you wound up over nothing. That's kind of the *point* is how freaked out you get over really nothing of importance, and I personally think that was the whole purpose of that call - to BUILD that kind of suspicion. In reality, it is probably supposed to be nothing more than her talking to another lookout (we know there are some in the radio vicinity since we see two other lookouts are able to walk to the site where Henry gets his food as well) Regarding getting Henry the new radio, she mentions lying to and tricking several people (including rangers) to get it to him. It sounded an awful lot like she got someone else to drop it off for her, and I highly doubt that was Ned. This is by far my biggest counterpoint and I think possibly the only area in which I believe this theory may be outright *wrong* (which is not something I say often). As for the note on how you don't believe Delilah could possibly not know about Wapiti Station, I would agree there. Except, she does know, and you learn that. Let me elaborate: If you happen to go through the boy scout camp without finding the memo regarding wapiti station, after you leave another set of dialogue is activated: One in which Delilah explains that while going through some documents, she found a memo to her *telling* her about Wapiti station and that she is to make sure the equipment is undamaged, etc. but that she forgot about it. Even before Henry gets his new radio, if you play it right Delilah admits to knowing about Wapiti station, but having forgot. Delilah did know about Wapiti, and she tells Henry this, but that she just forgot and is slightly unsure about it's purpose.

That's good counterpoint.And to be honest much less frustrating than thinking that the devs left this enormous plot actually well hidden from the players.Conspiracy and stuff.I mean yeah they leave some clues here and there,but I simple cannot believe that Delilah would be working with Ned.Why would she? The only thing that throws me off,is the hike towards the cache box where she hid the new radio.Someone was following us there.Ned,maybe?
@killthecube9226
@killthecube9226 7 жыл бұрын
+Mafias815 But remember, this is the part of the game where you find out and know you ARE being followed, and someone is listening to you. Delilah knows this, and makes it VERY convoluted, and 'the second tree over' is not a thing that can be recognized by Ned, as he has no tree chart. What I'm saying is that she makes it convoluted so Ned cannot tap into the new radios, which, he later does, by recording Delilah saying 'Burn that pace down when your at the tent.
@EnSayne987
@EnSayne987 7 жыл бұрын
I have two big problems with your counterpoints (counter-counterpoints I guess): First, I don't think that the second to last one is valid because Ned almost certainly had a walkie-talkie of his own. We even see one right next to the clipboard which we have to assume is his. So why wouldn't he have another one that he could drop off? It could have even belonged to Brian. As for the last and biggest one, you base it on the assumption that Delilah doesn't know about it, but obviously she does because of the reasons literally stated in the video. It's understandable if she doesn't know about it's purpose, but even if she didn't know the purpose and even if she didn't know about or forgot about the existence of a Wapiti Station, how would she miss the GIANT CHAIN LINK FENCE RUNNING ALL AROUND IT? She could see the camp and fence directly from her tower and she would know that something was there. Plus, although I haven't seen that other set of dialogue myself, from what you've said it seems that Delilah knows that it's a research site but not what exactly it's for by discovering this document all of a sudden. What if Ned left that note there to make Henry think that it was a research site, as per their plan? If he faked those reports, he could fake a note for a hotshot team that is already gone (and speaking of which, why would they just leave that note behind if it was real?) I think that she fakes the discovery of the document because it's her way of making sure that you believe that it is some sort of research site, in the event that you don't find the memo. It's her failsafe. When she does it, you were already supposed to think that it was a research site, so in my opinion she just provides the same information that you happened to miss.
@EnSayne987
@EnSayne987 7 жыл бұрын
@KillTheCube, she does that to lure Henry into a false sense of security, because you don't tap walkie-talkies! Phone lines are tapped because they run directly to each other, and it requires tapping to reach their signals, but walkie-talkies transmit over a radio frequency just like a normal radio, and it's easy to just pick up that signal and listen in. Having a new one wouldn't do anything except maybe have a different frequency, but that could be reached as well. Delilah should know this, and if she doesn't then she really sucks at her job (even though she's been working there for a decade, mind you). Obviously it didn't work anyway because he recorded them. I'm guessing that Henry didn't know about how walkie-talkies transmit so he just assumed it was ok, but it's just too ridiculous for Delilah to not know about it.

Daniel Sinks These are interesting, and I do agree on the possibility that her admitting to knowing about Wapiti Station was... another trick. However, something repeatedly stated in both the video and your point is that "Wapiti Station would be visible from Delilah's Tower". While this may appear to be true based off the actual in game geography, both characters Henry and Delilah point out that it actually *wouldn't* be visible because of the way it was "nestled in a little valley". Because of the actual in game geography disagreeing ever so slightly, I would say that this was perhaps another trick from Delilah, except Henry is actually the one that brings it up, which makes me think it was the game creator's way of cheating a little bit and just briefly explaining how Delilah could have not known about it.

I know I am VERY late to the firewatch theorizing, but I just want to point out something about Brian's death. It was his cheap rope that killed him. Early in the game when Henry uses Brian's rope, it breaks and Henry falls. That seems like it foreshadows Brian falling and dieing. The rope looks very similar as well. I know that little bit of info wasn't very helpful, but I just wanted to point it out. It was bothering me that nobody else had pointed it out.

This is indeed a great game that was cleverly designed. I did 2 playtroughs myself and I see myself playing this game a few more times in the coming years. I think people criticising the game just arent mature enough to grasp how well the ending is. You go into games thinking the worst is at every corner and you start to overthink scenarios ready for what modern horror has taught us will happen, but the change in pace for the ending kind of puts you back on planet earth and this type of paranoia can affect anybody even in real life. Like art meets reality kinda thing.

Thanks for making this video. I've played it last weekend and absolutely loved for the exact same reason that lots of people do not like it. The game creates some expectations and it looks like it will deliver them in the end but does the exact opposite. People don't like that but as in life, sometimes it happens. People playing this game, including me, were expecting a happy ending and stuff because they are used to it in games and movies in general but the game it's not about happy endings, but about personal connections and dealing with inside demons, which often leads to sadness. Anyway, I wanted to say that I have not noticed those things about Delilah and she being aware of Ned living in the park, that she's a liar. I will definitely play this game again. I mean I already would but now I'm even more curious.

Firewatch has great story telling. It's a masterclass in "show don't tell" and character development happening in tandem with exposition. It really doesn't deserve hate because not everyone caught on. I sincerely hope we can see more like it some day, because it painted a beautiful tapestry not just in terms of scenery, but also the nature of life. Your story isn't the only one happening. Other people's lives are going on around you, be it a coworker, a bear, or a man who's grieving the loss of someone he loved. It really tugged at my heart strings, using the most subtle cues, and as things were pieced together in front of me I found myself drawing my own conclusions and theorizing along. Any game that can make you think and play along like that is truly engaging, and saying it's bad writing is just a display of that player's ignorance or impatience.

I don't know why I thought this, but from the point when you discover Ned's bunker onward I thought for sure Ned and Delilah had hatched an elaborate scheme to trap Henry in a fire that they started and to have him killed in the fire while Ned takes Henry's place once they leave. The reason I thought this was because of a few key moments, like when Delilah was talking to another person and saying things like "He doesn't know.." She also asks him to describe to her what he looks like, so Ned can easily take his identity once Henry is out of the picture. I also thought the whole Ned's bunker thing was a diversion to keep Henry busy while Delilah and Ned, under Henry's identity, took off in the helicopter. In Delilah's tower there's even a drawing labeled "What WE know" implying there was somebody else. There were even a few moments from Ned's bunker afterwards where Delilah doesn't respond to Henry, making me paranoid.

I personally liked the ending. The story was about paranoia and how your mind can run wild in the right situation and how easily it does that. The ending reveals that all of it was simple, a guy who lost his kid in an accident was selfish and didn’t want to answer the questions and all that so he stayed in the forest and surveyed the lookouts for entertainment. If you do look closely at the transcripts you’ll see that it says for Delilah “many lovers despite long time companion” this does most likely say something about cheating or something like that but I personally don’t believe most of what was stated. Hate to be a buzzkill but I just wanted to put that out there Edit: The wonderful thing about leaving things to your imagination is that videos like this can be made.
