Mosfets are at the input of the laptop because the laptop has power internally, it might send current back into the charger if you don't block it. So when the switch is off, it blocks both current from the charger into the laptop and from the laptop into the charger. On a PC, MOSFETs help make up the VRM (voltage regulator module), which controls how much voltage other components on the motherboard, like the CPU or graphics card, receive. PC components like CPUs and graphics cards have strict operating voltages, so a motherboard’s VRM helps make sure this isn’t exceeded. MOSFETs are important to VRM functionality and have an impact on the amount of heat being generated by a VRM while it’s doing its job. MOSFETs can get quite toasty if you’re using a powerful graphics card, and a motherboard’s heatsink helps cool the MOSFETs and, thus, the VRM. In addition to keeping the overall system safe, keeping MOSFETs cool is also important for any type of overclocking. How Do They Work? MOSFETs are like switches that go on and off based on a signal from an integrated circuit (IC) called the PWM chip / controller. MOSFETs switch on and off quickly, allowing high current to flow through in short bursts. This, along with other parts of the VRM, controls voltage sent to other PC components on the motherboard.

FLIR cameras are expensive if you don't need them very often, but you can modify a infra-red thermometer gun by gluing a short length of tube over the sensor to restriuct the angle of view, giving it more of a telescope effect. Then you scan the tube end over the board and susp[ect compnents while you watch the temperature display. Or, do like I did in my teens - use your forearm gently to see where the heat is (AFTER checking that nothing is 100 degrees C+ with your fingertips - you can see him do this around 15:30 and he jumps when he feels the hot one. A third way is to brush isopropy alcohol over the board and see where it evaporates fastest. - he does this at 16:40 using Zippo Lighter fluid Feed a few volts (current limited to maybe half an amp or so) into the power jack rather than use the laptop's PSU, becasue the laptop PSU will crowbar due to the fault remember. I prefer to use a lower voltage at first, then go to the full 19v or so if nothing smokes ;)

Thanks for video. I would have some advice. if there is no thermal camera . you can use a check paper or flux. if there is a short circuit, at least 1v must be given there. because if there was one mosfet short circuit, not a capacitor on the motherboard, the 19 voltage you provided would go directly to the CPU or CPU or chipset line.

Good videos. Interesting to see the problem solving aproaches and thinking. I fell the fixes are sometime a bit too quick and dirty for me. jamich1 I would worry because I want longevity of the repair. Capacitors are used for a reason on power supplies. I waited too long to repair a desktop power supply that I knew had bad caps and the dirty power (too much ripple) took out the video card and killed a small cap on the motherboard. Maybe Sorin's reasoning is that there is still one cap left that was in parallel with the shorted cap, but if that is the case one cap failed when two were sharing the load, so one likely won't last long. Just because something works, doesn't mean it is working right and will have longevity.

Perhaps smaller businesses might, but larger enterprises and government departments often buy large numbers of laptops usually including a service contract which might be say 3 years. After the contract is over they are decommissioned and replaced by a new model and contract. It is quite common to see hundreds of these types of laptops (Core i5/i7) then end up in auction houses (eg: Mayson Gray Strange here in South Australia) and you can usually pick them up for $100 or less. Many units often show little use and are in great condition. Unless you have an expensive laptop that needs repair or are particularly attached to it, often it's cheaper to pickup something like these instead of paying more to have a faulty one repaired.

@Infiniti255 жыл бұрын
Satrio Rudi some capacitors are for filtering noise out of a circuit so attach to a line on one side and ground on the other side of the cap. Do t forget these laptops are designed to work anywhere in the world and you just need a different charger wire that plugs into local mains socket. Not all power grids are made equally or there maybe lots of construction equipment affecting the quality of mains power. This means circuits need to work in a vast array of operating conditions and caps like that are put in for that reason. Sorin knows that the quality of UK power is probably better than 75% of the worlds power and that it doesn't need replacing.

As an automotive service tech (ASE Master) I have used thermal transfer grease on many ignition modules as they can switch thousands of times per minute during higher speeds. Is it a little expensive where you are located? I guess I don’t know where you are located but your speech accent is hard to pin down. Perhaps near West German? I used a great deal of dielectric grease as a preventive measure because no service tech wants a return with the same failure. Right? Also, you cleaned the video connectors terminals using a “Q-Tip”. Sorry, I don’t know what it is called where you work. Is the cleaner just an alcohol based cleaner? Ironic since I’ve used the brand “WURTH” which has a German label under it and have no clue how to pronounce it. In the upper Midwest, they use salt & sand or brine during the winter. Not so much a problem for laptops, but terrible on vehicles chassis and sheet metal. Just curious! Enjoy the videos and already subscribed but like this one as well. Still not sure how leaving a capacitor out, allows it to work the way it’s intended, but if it works, who am I to say differently. Great!

@em0_tion5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, i loved AW's construction as well, but keep in mind, business class is meant to be used and constantly worked with, so you had the sliding cover to easily access your cooler - just change the thermal paste and keep going. AW on the other hand needed better access to everything, because they were pretty flexible with what components you could order in that laptop (customization). Logical step for them was a more modular design to allow for those "endless" configurations. Plus, it was double the price and actually, Alienware were a completely separate custom PC firm before Dell bought them out. From the pure repair technician and "do it right" mentality i completely agree with you. Tbh, i don't mind the complicated assembly in this model, my main gripe with it is the insufficient cooler inside. That thing gets hot like a motherfucker :D The older Studio series, even though multimedia user class and an even bigger bitch to disassemble, had much beefier cooling system in a lower price range.
