Dell Inspiron 17" 3000 Series Review. A laptop for accountants?

  Рет қаралды 34,045

Fast, but confused, big, heavy and lacking I/O. This Inspiron 17" is a well built laptop and performs fine, but it suffers from a small identity crisis.
geni.us/MII5nnE (Amazon)
$940 as configured
10th gen i7
512GB NVMe + 1TB HDD
Intel UHD
17.3" FHD Non-Touch
16GB RAM
All that horsepower but you can't really video edit or game with it. This is a small niche notebook for someone who does a lot of productivity work and wants to store a ton of video files or pictures. Maybe a lawyer or accountant? Someone who bounces from office to office.

Funny 😂 I did got it for all the reason you said. I work as HR (administrative work) I need to do those really big excel sheets, and similar software. But I do work remotely, travel with that one laptop and no need to be carrying along another monitor to extend the screen. The numbers on the side makes it so easy to type.

I bought one of these for around $1700 when I was in high school and needed a laptop to use SolidWorks on. It worked well for that when plugged in, but I quickly noticed it did not last long on just its battery. When I decided against being an engineer and thus did not use SolidWorks I discovered it can play steam games well but would quickly overheat. It seems when the processor was upgraded the fan and heat sync system were not changed and are inadequite. I like to say that its a great computer, fast with lots of ports, but a horrible laptop that is flimsy and runs hot.

I like this video, Thank you. But I don't understand why you consider the lack of USB-C as such a problem. Why is that? You could use a C to A adapter right? transfer speeds will be slower but still work fine for most peoples needs? The laptop has an sd card slot so you can still get media off your camera pretty quickly. What am I missing?
@ComputerStuff
@ComputerStuff 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Plica, thanks for watching! You're right, I suppose it's not a "problem" per say, and a lot of people still don't use USB-C products, but I look at it as a longevity standpoint. USB-C is the future and it'd be nice to see a USB-C port (1 is fine) on modern devices. By no means a deal breaker and certainly there are workarounds - a luxury port if you will. haha

Hi thanks for the video and review, unfortunately I only saw your video after I bought this one. Can I have your opinion on the battery life or lack of. Three hours seems on the extreme low end, even compared to my old Dells' Would you happen to know or recommend if there is a replacement with more operation time. Thank you

Dell sells another 17-inch Inspiron that's as powerful as this one but actually has a graphics card and the USB-C, fingerprint scanner, and all the other features, at the same price point. This is a weird laptop from Dell.

Can you recommend me a good desktop for video editing that won’t cost me alot ? Thanks
@ComputerStuff
@ComputerStuff 4 жыл бұрын
Sure thing Kuwaiti. If you're looking for a traditional desktop tower, I did a review on the ACER TC series desktop (one of my first so it sucked) - here is an Amazon affiliate link: amzn.to/396zGxj This desktop is around $400 and comes with a beafy CPU, 8GB of RAM, and 512GB SSD so it'll be quick and nimble and could handle some 1080p videos no problem. If you can swing it, I'd recommend adding another RAM stick to it (DDR4) to bump you to 16GB (or more) of RAM if you're doing lengthy videos. Comes with the Intel UHD graphics, but these can be upgraded in the future via a PCI Express card later on as well.

I bought the 3790 with the 8 GB ram and the 4GB Radeon graphics for $650. I've had some serious issues with this thing not booting up. Spent and hour with tech support and still not super happy with it. Overall it's OK...but I won't buy another Dell ever again. Not sure if I'm having a hardware issue or a software issue...but everytime I turn this on...I hold my breath that it will actually boot up.
@ComputerStuff

I hope they resolve your issues. Dell's have had some questionable reliability lately (I've talked about it in other videos) but their support is generally good and they make some of the nicer laptops you can get. Best of luck.

I am so sorry I did not see this video before I purchase this laptop last July 2020. It is my first and last Dell unless I purchase an XPS. Sadly, it is equipped with an SSD drive, hard to upgrade memory and most of all hard to find documentation (correct documentation) for this laptop. It is sluggish, the screen is black after I turn it on, often, and I can go on but you know. It can't handle novice graphic and video software...ugh. Selling this computer very soon.
