I just did this for a Dell Latitude E5420 and apart from a few minor variances on HDD position and screw locations, the general principal is the same. Also, I did not remove everything as they showed here - HDD, Heat Sink, Fan connections, Wireless card connections, etc. This video is applicable for any and all part removal of the latitude E 6420 / 5420 series and is very well made with clear instruction. For hinge replacement, my suggestion would be to start with battery removal and then go directly to keyboard removal ( including 2 screws at back) and LCD/screen removal. After removal of these components, you will get sufficient access to the hinge to unscrew them and make the change. One of the screws on each hinge is slightly hidden - total of 4 screws on each side. Good luck and thanks again to Parts People for a nice video. Btw, I bought the replacement parts from them too = which is why I came to their instructions to start with.

thanks for posting. I was watching this video with my jaw on the floor wondering do you really have to do all this just to get to the damn hinges!

This was a great video presentation showing how to take apart the entire computer. I was pleasantly surprised with such a visually detailed disassembly and reassembly of the DELL E6420 laptop computer. Even though, only one laptop needed its hinges to be tightened and not replaced as yet. I just went back to using DELL Latitude laptops. My venture outside of DELL laptops was a disaster. I purchased new Samsung "POS" laptops (wife and mine) which did not last even two years without falling apart. Keys on the keyboard fell apart and stopped working. Touchpad worked as if a ghost was directing the cursor. The touchpad died a slow death. The screen developed permanent spots and bad pixels. The hinges went out and broke the case. The case started to break and crack everywhere. The internal battery went out. The charging system eventually shorted out. Poof, the Samsung "POS" laptops died with sparks and an arcing and snapping noises. This is only a partial list of the problems with our new Samsung "POS" laptops. My wife and I are not hard on computers. Samsung computers can not withstand even the most delicate of handling. Love their phones but their computers suck.

Samsung's screens suck as well. My Latitude ATG had a Samsung lcd screen which leaked that nasty sticky fluid.,

Your instructions are great step-by-step except I’m getting an LCD cable error in my machine is shutting off I know if that means having to replace the cable? Or not I’m not sure.

For (Very Easy for repair) and such a Quality Lappy of the business class, this was an awesome tutorial. Thank You! I will never get rid of my E6420! Best Laptop Ever just have to swap in an SSD in the Express Card Cage. Possible Triple Raid0, Seriously! FYI find the best Heatsink thermal compound and use it CONSERVITAVLY no more heat problems, same with GPU as with CPU. Thanks Again.

You probably don't check this but here goes anyway. I replaced the screen before twice actually. but one of those front hinge cover screws I just cannot get out and it's stripped and it's flat against the screen it's the most visible of the screws, so stupid question: any suggestions

if you look at the hinges they only have one screw each on the outside of the laptop you don't need to do a teardown just to get out the hinges

.. so guess I won't be trying this one by myself lol!

you might as well rebuild a car engine and transmission, it probably has less steps. Why so many steps just to get at the hinge ???

Jeez, basically I'm going to practically dissemble the whole laptop!

Well you REALLY don't need to take the motherboard out, or the keyboard FFS - this is a terrible title, it is not what it says it. This is a disassemble the laptop so it has everything someone needs.

We follow the full sequence of steps published in Dell's service manual. I agree there are shorter paths.
