@@ArtofServer I've watched at least 3 or 4 all the way through now. Not counting ones under 20 minutes! Extremely helpful, AND I got your eBay store saved. Going to be buying a new HBA in the near future to replace my 9211. I'm a bit foggy on the motherboard revisions, but what I know for sure is that R410 revision 1 boards can't support certain (any?) 56xx CPUs, and the Rev 2 (and 3?) boards can, but only with a BIOS update (though I don't know what BIOS update specifically added the support). I did download the release notes from Dell all the way back to 1.09 or something and the later versions did make some comments about supporting the newer processors. Allegedly no R410 can support 130w TDP processors, and 95w is the max. But maybe only for rev 2? Not really sure. And I sure as hell have no idea what the part numbers are for the various revisions (I've found a few listed, but not a complete list). I'll dig up some links and post those tomorrow (it's a little late right now) but I do know if you search for something along the lines of "upgrade r410 processor" or similar, you'll find threads abound and people asking about board revisions, etc...

One (tangental) question I had was predicated on the potential role of the NetApp DS ... as in, Level1Tech implied that somehow it may have been responsible for the improvements to their ZFS system ... although, given that the SuperMicro you used to "house, power & aggregate" the drives -- and literally didn't even need a CPU ... how COULD it be the basis for which his performance is 'good'. In the interim, I'll be doing my best to glean as much as I can from your videos to see if there's something I missed or a means by which I can solve my bandwidth issues in my T320 ... as, presumably, it can at least keep up with this computer. 19:12 "Mainly I want to know what IP address iDRAC has picked up" One can also obtain this information from the small screen on the front panel of the server. So while convenient, a monitor/keyboard combo is not a requirement to connect to a Dell server with an unknown IP. Even if the LAN runs on a different IP network (e.g. 192.168.1.x instead of the 192.168.0.x as this server was statically set to), one can give their PC manually a separate IP address from the server's network in order to log in headless. 22:06 "Let's power this machine up" You can also do that from the Java console you just launched. There is the Tools menu from where you can send power on, warm & cold restart, and power off commands. Once the console runs, there's no need to go back to the iDRAC page in the browser just for powering up the server.
@ArtofServer4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the suggestions. Yeah, I usually use the power control from the kvm app, but the idrac was so old on that version, there was no power control under the "tools" menu! After the update, that was available.

The i in iDRAC stands for "integrated". The DRAC 5 was basically a PCI card a bit like an H200/H700 cards designed for a special slot on the motherboard. The DRAC 4 was an actual PCI card with bracket and everything. Thought it probably doesn't work outside the relevant Dell servers. There is a cable connecting to the motherboard, but it does have a VGA connector on the card, along with an ethernet socket. Then came along the Integrated DRAC 6 which didn't burn an expansion slot and is called the iDRAC for short probably because sticking an "i" in front of a name was trendy due to Apple at the time.

As I follow along on this first part, I noticed that as you selected the downloaded viewer file, Java launched and the KVN app launched. For the novices, and IT newbies like me, did you have do load some app from Dell that then used an installed version of Java to display the remote session to the server? Followed all of your directions, but as you predicted, later version of Java Web Start make the iDRAC app inoperable for Mac and PC. Thank you very much for going so incredibly in-depth on this historic, yet useful piece of hardware. Just today I struggled through all the firmware updates, concluding that I actually needed to boot Linux from a USB drive. I normally run ESXi and the updaters don't work there. I ran into the same issues you did with the BMC updater and I'm actually starting to think that it will only work on either a Win 2k8 / 2k12 boot, or from a RHEL 5 derivative. My USB drive booted CentOS 6, so that wouldn't fly. I'll give CentOS 5 a shot soon. Also, with regards to the BMC update: it does have one use. Supposedly it will help you make the fans quieter! There's an issue with the #4 fan, which runs at very high speeds on lower BMC versions, making lots of noise.
@tess46474 жыл бұрын
I've learned a lot in the past 24h and will probs make a blog post out of it. Basically, if you're dead-set on doing the BMC update: use a FreeDOS boot DVD, extract the PER410*.exe file for the BMC updater and put the contents on a USB drive, connect the USB drive before booting from the DVD. The system will also refuse to flash the BMC as long as the iDRAC is installed, so you'd have to remove both daughter cards.

@@ArtofServer nother question or two, is that board the fans by the powersupply separate or part of the PSU unit my 410 doesnt have the redundant PSUs? good news is my r410 is up and running... Bad news is... one bay is running Windows server, the other 3 are only 2tb drives for now.... in theory i should be able to swap 1 of the 2tbs out for larger... have the raid array rebuild on that drive then continue to swap rebuild... swap rebuild? or is there some fancy thing i need to do?

The board you are asking about is probably the PDB as described. If you don't have the redundant hot swap psu setup, then you don't have a PDB; just a normal single PSU.

Are you available to support my team with the default setting? I will cover your time

Support you for what? Please elaborate? Did you order something from my store?
@josephobel73334 ай бұрын
@ArtofServer l didn't order anything from your store but I have used R410 server and the default settings isn't working ( New IP is not Generated). I followed all the steps on your clip. I need your help on this and if something is required to be installed on it, I will buy.

It’s a very painful process to update these servers. Too painful honestly.

i have the T 410 and is the worst and slowest server ive ever had, very disPPOINTED
@ArtofServer2 жыл бұрын
Depends on what you're doing and for what purpose you want to use the server. You can consider upgrading the CPUs, or get a more modern server. I don't recommend 11th gen servers if your needs are compute intensive. These are fine for running a simple file server, or other light duty.

@@ArtofServer i just wanted to use for a freenas or storage, so i got it fairly cheap mostly saved on shipping since im in florida. I updated bios only because there was no idrac or anything else included. It has 5502's in it so i put 5645's in. Replace the what i call the server version of a dell perc 6/i with an adaptec 3805. It still was so god awful slow with booting, etc that even an ssd did little or no improvement so i chalked it all up to my ignorance or a weak board.
