One of the most common questions we get at MACS is how mobile A/C compressors work, how they can be properly diagnosed, and what steps can be taken to help successfully replace compressors.
Tim Iezzi is co-owner and lead technician at Iezzi's Auto Service in Reading, PA. He's also a regular contributor to MACS publications, conducts training classes for MACS and Carquest Technical Institute, and was recently elected to serve as a member of MACS board of directors.
In this video, Tim Iezzi explores the operation, disassembly, reassembly and examines the failure modes of this particular Delphi Harrison V5 variable displacement 5-cylinder mobile air conditioning A/C compressor. He removes the clutch driven plate, clutch pulley, drive plate, clutch coil, and splits open the case housing to inspect the internal components, drive shaft, pistons, swash plate, reed valves, seals, o-rings, pressure control valve, bolts, etc. Learn about what made this compressor fail, how it was dropped (which damaged the drive plate and bent the input shaft), how to look for this problem, and the presence of flush solvent inside the compressor which caused rusting and a seized bearing.

Excellent video more like this are needed for our industry for the new young guys and older guys who never had formal education in air-conditioning. Also seen flush solvents and additives swell the O-rings so the displacement valve get stuck and never moves. It’s too bad the use of an Micron gauge would show you when you have low volatile solvents still flashing off in your AC system that you can actually read and measure on a test device. Instead of just relying on a compound age that reads 29 inches of mercury and even that is often not accurate and cannot even possibly measure the flash off of solvents or moisture in the system. Therefore later you get corrosion and breakdown of oil‘s due to lack of knowledge. The lack of education is expensive.

I find this video very interesting. I have a car with this compressor. I noticed at idle, the clutch is engaged continuously with AC turned on. It does not cycle on and off like other cars I have owned. Is this normal?

easy solution SD5S14 Softer on engine and better cooling even SD7H15 softer than harrisons :3

It's not clear to me what keeps the refrigerant from escaping from under the bolt heads, is there some kind of seal under the bolt heads?

Thank you I had no idea what it meant by drain the oil at the crankcase I guess there is more than 1 crankcase on the car 😅
