I work for a major airline in revenue management in Europe and want to clarify - Delta doesn't offer just "Delta Vouchers" for overbooked compensation... you can select gift cards including amazon, Target, best buy, and visa or american express gift cards which makes the whole process better than other North American airlines like UA, AC, and AA. I've been trying to get my airline to do something similar becuase it's so much more positive for customers. And just because you hear an announcement doesn't mean that it's actually oversold. Historical data shows a certain number of people won't show up or will misconnect, so we overbook to account for this. we do this frequently in my airline too. Therefore, the staff are making the announcements in anticipation but frequently everyone gets to board with no shows or misconnects losing their seats closer to departure time.

One advantage DL has with this flight is the timing and aircraft. Arriving in Tokyo at 2pm gives you plenty of time to enjoy your first day. And being an A330 you have 2-4-2 configuration which feels less crowded

When I went to Paris, France, I took American Airlines and something was really cool because the flight had seats that folded down into a bed and I could get some sleep on my flight because it was a very long journey from my hometown, and that was back in 2002, after my brother graduated from high school, and I was so excited to go, and the time difference was so amazing, I was there for a week with my family, I wish I could go there again one day.

Nice they have a terminal bus now. I remember that 20-25 minute walk to get to the Bradley terminal.

Now in 2024 they have the t1-t3 to Tom Bradley terminal connector with moving walkways. Not sure if they still have the delta gates bus sevice, but they do still have t1 to west gates bus service.

Every airline will sell more seats than what are physically available. It is inevitable, not doing so would result in a lot of lost revenue. Delta's procedure handles it the best, as they will solicit for volunteers at the gate and let them "bid" for the amount of compensation they get rather than just pick passengers that have the lowest fare (cheapest tickets) and involuntarily kick them off the flight they were intending to take. That's how United got into all that trouble with that doctor they physically dragged off their airplane. That flight wasn't necessarily oversold but they needed people to come off to make space for deadheading crew which would make it fall under the same procedure as an oversell. Being in the industry myself, I wouldn't be surprised if this were a weight optimization move due to it being a long haul. More often than not the airline will seek for volunteers to come off their flight to allow for more fuel to be loaded due to unfavorable weather conditions like headwinds on these long haul flights. I've seen flights to Australia go out with 30 open seats just because of the winds. I've also seen flights in and out of Vegas solicit for volunteers because of the high density altitude and hot weather.

Yes! All LAX is connected airside via moving walkways. American terminal 4 to Delta Terminal 2/3 will likely take about only 25 minutes, so 2 hours is plenty!
