Delta RP70538 Overview

after watching your video & this being one of the more $$ carts I decided to take it apart. I noticed the date was in 2005...so 16+ yrs of those springs being compressed. I took them out and with needle nose slightly made them larger ensuring they’re were the same length. Just a note, just make them barely longer. I then added a lil petro jelly on the gaskets/o rings/seats and put it back together. After 2 years of leaky drips from my shower head no more leaks and works like brand new! Thanks 👍🏻💪🏻

Most of time The cartridge unless the check valve is cracked then you need both

Hello - the top piece of the cartridge came off and it doesn’t go back on flush. There seems to be a little pressure keeping it from being flush. Is this a lemon part or am I missing something? Thanks in advance.

It looks like the same cartridge that I have. I am installing a new " Delta B114900C-SS Foundations Single-Handle Spray Tub and Shower Faucet " in my shower and have capped the tub faucet line but I cannot the shower to run like it should I just have a trickle when opening my valve, can you help?

question; my Delta cartridge appears to be 70538 but the brass arms located on the cartridge (unsure of terminology) are not in a straight line but more angled. Not at 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock but 12 and 5. Is this okay or do I need a different cartridge

Can a pressure valve work of there is no hot water? I install one and it won't work I double check everything was done correctly

Yes. Or wear a raincoat . I've had to replace before when I couldn't find water shut off. Pull the shower curtain shut, have the new cartridge ready and yank the old one. Work fast lol.

I'm desperate to not change the original valve in the wall, (I think it's PTR188700) but I am frantically looking for a "modern" style chrome trim kit that is compatible. I don't care what brand, just something with sharp lines like the Peerless Xander, or the square Kohler trims. Please tell me what adjustments/clone brands/discontinued stock/retrofit are available for use in this case. (Original handle escutcheon says peerless 8700 series.) THANKS FOR ANY SUGGESTIONS FROM ANY people who have experience with this. Cheers!

Hi there, just wondering if you can help me. Our shower cartridge is leaking but I don't know the brand or model of the ceramic cartridge that needs replacement. The top portion of RP70538 looks similar to the one I have but the bottom is different. Can I send you some pictures as you might be familiar with it? If I can't find a replacement, our plumber said he will have to replace the valve and get a Moen one instead.

Guess I should’ve posted in the public area lol. I just bought a tub/shower set that has this cartridge, and the pressure is terrible. Is there a mod, or something I can do? Replacement of the cartridge? Or should I just get a new set from a different brand?

make sure you have the hot and cold water valves on. if you are testing it with only hot or only cold it will give you no pressure. also check the water pressure with the shower head off. sometimes it gets debris inside it.

Have you tried removing the restrictions in the shower head itself? Mist are limited to 2.5gpm or less

Yes I have done that. It's a trickle out of the bathtub Faucet as well.

What about a new cartridge. The pressure balance feature built into the cartridge could cause reduced pressure. It's a safety feature incase you loose pressure on the cold side you will not get scaulded..

So I have good pressure now, but I removed the hot water check valve now I have to turn it almost all the way hot to get warm water.

You can adjust how far the handle turns by rotating the plastic cap on the gear on the newer style or adjusting the brass stops on the old style, however this is something that rarely ever needs adjusting. If you are lacking hot or cold water, most likely the cartridge is bad. There is a scald guard feature in the cartridge that could become stuck giving either hot or cold water only.

Yes most likely. There is a pressure balance spool in this cartridge to prevent scalding. Sometimes it gets stuck in wont let the water flow through freely.

A little disappointed that the video didn't address adjusting the temp. This is a common problem, as the manufactures seem to assume everyone has a small child that could be scalded, so it's set to go no hotter than warm. I replaced my cartridge and have this problem. Can this cartridge be adjusted, and if so, how? Thanks for any replies.

You can adjust the temperature by rotating the stop. This is in the very front of the cartridge. If you have the Genuine Delta version there's a Greenish blue cap that comes of and you can rotate on the gear. The generic version has 2 brass arms on the gear that you can rotate to allow the handle to turn further

Bought this same product main water valve is on but does not come out my shower , i do not have a spout just shower

Make sure the cartridge is installed in the correct direction. There is an H & C on the bottom side of the cartridge. Also if you have isolation valves on or behind the faucet, make sure both are in the on position. If you turn one side on only without the other you wont get any pressure due to being a pressure balance cartridge. It needs equal pressure on both sides.

I replaced cartridge, trim sleeve, and handle. All parts were lost during remodel. I ordered them from plumbing parts store, so parts are correct. Water runs normally even when handle is in off position. What am I missing? Something to do with check valve maybe?

Possibly. The check valve is about 1/4" thick that fits behind the cartridge. It has gaskets on both sides and if it's missing I'm sure it would leak

I had the same problem. Make sure the check valve has the blue rubber piece. My shower faucet would still run when in the off position and I was going to call a plumber when I decided to take everything apart and have another look. That is when I noticed thin rubber piece missing from the check valve. Luckily I found that piece on the floor and was able to put it back in. Worked like a charm.

A bad cartridge will cause all hot or all cold water due to the pressure balance spool getting stuck on one side

Mine too. Turning all the way to hot , stops water flow. How to adjust the the brass stops? I see a pin on one but it doesn't want to budge.
