Dude, you are a saint! I was prepared to tear open my wall to replace everything since I had such little pressure. I tried your drill technique and now I have more pressure than I ever have had in 30 years in this house. The thing is, my bath spigot and shower head both work perfectly. I didn't lose my bath spigot function. The drilling portion was easy, not much pressure needed. I used a 1/4" drill bit, and used my vacuum cleaner to suck out the chips. Thank you!
@usaryder745 жыл бұрын
Cool. You are right, I don't think I had to seal up the spigot. But I never re-opened. I don't ever use it. I don't know why the valve system has to send the water down, just to make a hard turn going up. That is where the build up happens and you lose flow. Water always follows the least path of resistance. So the mod does not affect the spigot function. Open heart operation does the trick.

It worked for me as I don’t use a tub. If anyone have any doubts. I used a boroscope with a light to make sure I see what I’m drilling. Started with the smallest drill bit and worked my way up to about 1/8” or so. I also drilled out my cartridge to allow more flow. Water pressure was so intense that I had to use my shower head diverted at lowest setting. Thanks OP. You are a life saver.

I am very pleased to report that this mod works and has saved me a couple thousand dollars to replace two delta valves with something that works better. These are in a lake house which is on a well and has never had the kind of pressure we have at home. Nonetheless, what we had worked adequately until we did a major renovation about 10 years ago, which included redoing all of the plumbing. Our contractor installed these Delta valves, and I had no idea until reading this thread that they were intentionally designed to retard water flow. I had actually replaced both valve cartridges, thinking that was the problem. Replacing the cartridges seemed to help, but I now realize that what actually helped was me using air pressure to blow out the lines while doing the cartridge replacement. This would only help for a while, however, and the problem with anemic water pressure would recur. I now know that I was simply blowing out debris that was clogging the narrow channels where the water had to go around the interior pipe in the valve body. This design is nuts, but opening up the interior pipe eliminates the bottleneck. I now have good pressure for both the shower and the bath spigot. Both were previously impaired by the design bottleneck. Also, there is no need to block the bath spigot. This mod fixes both the bath and shower pipe flows. Take your time with the drill, vacuum out the metal shavings, run the water with the shower head off to make sure any lingering metal shavings are flushed out, reinstall the shower head and hit the showers. Thanks so much for figuring this out and sharing your discovery.

Tried everything from compressed air, water back flushing, tapping on the brass tube to loosen sediment, rust and sediment remover. I also had the same delta diverter valve as the original poster. Tub spout still works 100% as well. I believe the compressed air would work it was caught soon enough.

Just want to let anyone know, I've had low water flow/pressure ever since we moved in. I tried numerous shower heads, cartridges, etc etc and nothing worked. When the cartridge was removed and the valve body was the only thing attached, there was enough flow to fill my bathtub halfway in 1 minute, so I knew I did not have a "blockage" or low water pressure. Installing the cartridge reduced the water to nothing more than a dribble comparatively. After drilling the hole in the center tube in the valve body my water flow has increased 200% and pressure at the shower head is fantastic. It also doesn't take 20 seconds for the water to come out of the shower head after using the diverter like it did with the low water flow. So I just want to say thank you, I can now enjoy a shower and not stand there for 10 minutes to rinse the soap off anymore.

Man, thank you so much for trying this and posting a video about it. Thought I'd share my experience with doing this. First, we have different trim and valve body. It's got a handle for flow and small handle for temperature. Now the entire reason I even watched your video was the thumbnail showed the inside of the body and it looked exactly like ours. BUT this a big but to, when I drilled the hole, no tiny pipe inside the pipe you drilled. It still worked though, now pressure better than new. Basically, I went with big bit and "flattened" and dented the pipe which got a pinhole started before going to a smaller bit. I went incredibly slow and grindy, and had dust instead of shavings LOL. I was really worried about the tiny pipe inside, even though I ended up not even having one. I suggest to anyone doing this, take your time on the hole drill. I mean the whole point of this mod is to save you from replacing the valve body to get pressure back. You have no idea how much of a job this saved me from having replace that valve body, whew... Great video! Best potato vid on you tube man, thank you!

Nice to hear that. I think the true problem is at the bottom, water outlet, where the water is forced do make a 180 degree turn to reach the shower head. Calcium build must be culprit. But we can't get to it. Hence the bypass. My shower still works well after all these years.

Thanks for having the courage to take the risk of experimenting to see if this mod worked. Changed the correct cartridge twice, but the water continued to just dribble out at the shower head. Valve and pipes were clean/unclogged, and pressure elsewhere in the house was fine. Found your video, performed the mod, and it immediately solved the low flow/pressure problem! For others reading this, the drill size I used was a 9/32nds from the 'Titanium' line of drill bits from Harbor Freight. Went at slow to moderate speed and pressure on the drilling until I felt the drill 'punch through' the tube wall. I actually kept the previously suspected 'bad' cartridge and tried it first with the mod. Lo and behold, the 'bad' cartridge plus the mod produced high pressure and great flow at the shower head, and there were no leaks in/around the valve! I now have an extra cartridge for future failures. Great job and thanks again!

THANK YOU !!!! I was so nervous to drill that hole, so I went to Home Depot and had them open the box of a Delta faucet (which they did mostly because the retired Plumber employee thought I was nuts!), because I can’t see inside mine in the wall. He was shocked to see for himself that there is a pipe within the pipe fitting, and he thought it was the stupidest design he had ever seen. Once I saw it, I knew there was no reason to fear drilling the hole. The internal pipe is just a thin piece of copper that Delta has wedged inside the fitting in order to restrict water flow. It is truly a bad design, because the shape at the bottom of the insert would certainly catch debris and create a blockage. I am so excited! I have a usable shower once more!! Never would have thought of this in a million years.

I fixed this problem (very low flow through Delta shower valve, with good water supply and good cartridge) using only vinegar! Drilling the hole might be better long-term, but it wasn't necessary in my case. Remove the tub spout (it unscrews) and cap or plug the pipe. Remove the showerhead, rotate the shower arm so it points upward, and fill the pipe with vinegar using a funnel. Let it sit overnight (I left it 12 hours). Uncap the tub spout pipe and run the water. A bunch of crud dissolved by the vinegar should shoot out. Put your thumb over the pipe and flush out the shower riser before putting the showerhead back on.

Also to note I have a delta valve that I have is a HF and has only the shower port, no tub port as I planned only to do a shower head. Still it is very similar to many other styles that is in this grouping and only a few letters in the name can change up the whole thing. Make sure you have the right version if you are installing it. It is not the design of the body being wrong but whoever chose it got the wrong one for the intended purpose or the new owners want a different purpose for the shower body to handle. Just do your research on the products before you deal with them.

This modification TOTALLY WORKS!! I had this identical issue, and applied the modification and my shower works like new! Saved me AT LEAST $500.00 to have a Plumber change out the whole faucet. I had IDENTICAL symptoms also. Some words of advice - When drilling, go EASY and SLOW! You're drilling into COPPER which once the drill bit "bites" into the copper, it will open rather easily. Don't press hard! You don't want to find out the hard way what happens when you break the little copper pipe on the inside of the pipe you are wanting to drill open. You see in this video once the bit bites into the copper, it jams the drill a little bit. DRAWBACK - If you use the Tub, when you run Tub water, there will be a trickle of water also out of the shower head. You can get a shut-off valve for the shower head to avoid this, or you can just live with it. I normally take SHOWERS only anyhow. If you do wish to replace your faucet, get the HIGH FLOW version. My Plumber advises there is a "Miser" version which this is, and a High Flow unit that compensates for newer Tankless water heaters, which have to see a certain amount of water flow before they will heat water. My tankless heater wouldn't even kick in until after I did this modification. But like usaryder74 said, DO THIS MODIFICATION AT YOUR OWN RISK!! But if by chance you happen to break the small pipe, let us all know what happens! Delta was on here bashing this video. WELL DELTA, if you made it more clear on your products packaging that this faucet is a WATER SAVER / WATER MISER version and it isn't recommended for TANKLESS WATER HEATER USE, you'd have alot less people pissed off at you!

@@usaryder74 Arrrgh. Not a success. I drilled out the pipe and drilled out the restrictors in the valve (the top ones) and also drilled out the inlet ports on the valve's metal plate. I had baselined the flow and it increased a bit but still just below 2GPM. I took out the mixing valve - still no improvement. I don't think the outlet spigot has a restrictor. So the flow is being restricted somewhere and I might go back to look at the 'pipe in a pipe'. Do you know if there is a diagram that shows exactly what it does? Any other ideas? There has to be a restrictor somewhere as there is loads of volume and pressure presented to the valve?

I had same problem in a rental. After having to drill out the hardened set screw just to get the handle off, they should use soft set screw since this is a common problem...anyway I had plenty of water at the valve body hole with cartridge out. Then I twisted the pressure balance back about 20 degrees off to remove. I put the handle portion of cartridge back in valve body and installed apron nut. I pressured system and still very low pressure out of top and bottom. This eliminated the cartridge completely and told me the restriction was in valve body. After looking at valve body at Lowe's the tube you drilled is crimped into a square below where you drilled. So basically you have a square copper pipe in a round hole. This only leaves 4 small moon shaped passages for the water to go by and into the lower spout. Small chunks of rust or sediment can easily clog them up. I took off lower spout adapter and purchased a double garden hose fitting and a brass fitting to adapt the 1/2" pipe to a male hose fitting. I capped shower head and then attached hose to fitting and pressurized with cartridge out. This back washes the small holes that get clogged. Rust and sediment came out and after reassembling it worked like new. I will also say that drilling the hole in tube as he did will still slow lower spout to work as before. The only disadvantage is it will use up hot water reserve pretty quick by drilling hole. The only reason copper tube is there is because of federal restrictions in water flow to shower head.

will still allow lower spout to work

I don't have the same Delta valve as depicted here (mine was a shower only version), but this video did cause me to inspect the holes behind the cartridge (which I had replaced). There was some small amount of hard water build up, and a plastic strainer coming off cartridge. I jammed a screwdriver through the buildup and removed the plastic strainer - now I have ALL of the water pressure. I can't comment on the drilling part, but I figure I just save myself $200+ from having a plumber come out and trouble shoot this issue. Drilling seems like a low cost thing to try here, because if this is your issue, your options seem to be replace the value, or drill and maybe have to replace the valve. Thanks @usaryder74.

These valves are "water saving" type with restrictions on maximum flow. Usually it's 2gpm, lower in California. I found Moen S3384 rated the highest, 17.5gpm @45psi
@usaryder745 жыл бұрын
The cartridge continues to only allow the regular volume, the body is not even the problem, but it was the solution for all these years. I think the problem is at the bottom, where the water turns 180 degree back to the shower head. Calcium/mineral build up must be the culprit.

I'm in a similar situation. I wonder how the inside pipe that you drilled gets water inflow from the bottom spout. Trying to understand the mechanism
@usaryder743 жыл бұрын
I now understand this thing better. Water gets mixed in the cartridge and is sent down to the spout. When spout is shut, the water goes up passing trough the "inner tube". Somewhere where the water is sent back up, a build up of sediments take place. This reduces the water flow. The hole I made is a bypass. I actually put a new spout at the bottom, and works fine. The only difference is that when the spout is open (like bathing a kid) some water still makes it's way up to the shower head. Read other people's comments. Lots of success stories. I should make a follow up video.

It seems to only serve the purpose of collecting sediment and clogging. Just curious.

Eric Worden i think the larger tube leads the water to the bottom faucet or what ever that is. in normal conditions, the water finds no way out at the bottom if you pull the little button, so it climbs back up inside the smaller tube. in the process calcium builds somewhere. 😂😆😂 spray some PB Blast on it and let it sit for ten minutes no drill required 😉👍 Using a drill will put you at a high risk of damage 🤟🏽

Hi Delta Faucet, I'm sorry to hear that you were publicly making false statements. However, you can easily state the new unaltered OEM flow rate in gpm. After a simple flow test is performed, then a comparison of the valve in the field could be determined as acceptable or a fault and your possible debris obstruction diagnosis or another possible cause of the decreased flow rate could then and only then be made. By simply stating your blanket diagnosis of debris blockage to the thousands of Delta faucet owners experiencing this decreased flow rate issue/symptom without even identifying there is a problem clearly shows your total disreguard to remedy this issue. Futhermore, you have demonstrated a dishonest diversion tactic by not even exploring the possiblity that the issue is a result of design. You have failed miserably at your position of Delta Faucet Representative and shall no longer be allowed to lie to your customers

Hi usaryder74, I'm sorry to hear that you were experiencing low flow. However, we do not recommend altering the valve in this way. The most common cause of reduced flow is debris. If you need any help in the future, our customer service team would be more than happy to assist. Please feel free to call us at 1-800-345-3358 or email customerservice@deltafaucet.com. -Jon

I hear what you say. But I had plumber come once to back flush. I just won't be paying them every year for it. After this mod, zero plumber calls. 🍁

I'm kind of disgusted with Delta and their company line of "get a plumber", "debris", "blah blah blah". No. The problem is your shit cartridge that severely limits the rate of water flow to about 1GPM. So fuck off. I won't buy Delta products EVER AGAIN. Complete shit.

This is BS... The holes are already way bigger than the holes on and inside the cartridge! Until you open them up this is useless.
