Uh, guys, this isn't a white girl singing a song about slavery. This is about the Salem witch trials, oppression of women in accusation of witchcraft in the name of God. The lyrics connect to when people threw the accused into a river as a bogus trial to see if they were a witch. If they sunk, they were a normal citizen. If they floated, they were a witch and were taken and killed anyway. Either way you were dead. If you were accused of being a witch, the best thing to do was to run from the mob. That's what the song's about, so PLEASE stop getting angry about Delta singing a nonexistent song about slavery! EDIT: How the hell did this get so many likes? Why are you all here?!?

For all of you confused: this is a song about the witch trials ... And what would probably happen if one of the girls they meanlessly killed was actually a witch. She bewitched the townsfolk and danced/sang them to death. Details to pick up on: her reflection in the mirror, first how it didn't turn around when she did, and then when it blew out the lantern after. The town's men's eyes were normal before they attempted to take her, but as they became bewitched their eyes became completely black (1:10)

Quote from the band members: "When making the video, we felt strongly about maintaining the creepiness and mystery of the song; however it was never important to do a direct depiction of the story in the song. After eight frustrating months of fruitless ideating, Ian suggested telling the story of a witch trial, which immediately resonated."

Thank you 😭 The number of people saying the _song_ means so-and-so because the _video_ shows a detail to support it miss the point - the song _can_ mean that, but a song - any song - does not _necessarily_ have the same meaning as its music video.

This is a song about the witch trials. Specifically about a mother comforting and preying for her daughter who has been accused of witchcraft. The lyric “hold my hand, its a long way down to the bottom of the river” is a reference to how they would test to see if one was a witch. They would tie a suspect to a chair or simply throw them into a river to see if they’d float. If they did they were a witch. This connects to the lyric “don’t you lift em, let em drown alive” because the mother is preying to god that she didn’t float because if she did she would be a witch and would be burned, a much worse death.
@babyshrimp27004 жыл бұрын

Her vocals are amazing. She has a lot of soul. I really like that this is based on the Salem Witch Trials. Very harsh time period. @briargray23554 жыл бұрын
Potential take: She's not actually really a witch in the beginning. My reasoning is that, in the beginning when they first break in and take her, she is being genuinely forced and is distressed and worried. The reflection in the mirror which continues watching her, I think, is a demon/spirit/the devil that has yet to intervene. She gets forced along a by her hunters helplessly, before giving in to her fate. The screen pans to show her workers, now possessed and surrounded by spirits that seek to see her survive, going against this "godly" notion that an innocent woman must die. It pans back to the woman, and she's now also possessed. The people behind her now have masks because at this point, they're reducing it to good vs evil symbolism. The ones in the black masks are aligned with "god", the ones with the red masks aligned with "the devil". At this point her demeanor changes to confidence, power, and command, now possessed by the spirit in the mirror who was able to take hold once she gave in. With this charisma and the demons/spirits matching the forces of her captors, she gains total control of the hunt, ultimately turning it on the very people who initially lead it. The demons/spirits succeed at killing the "righteous", and the masks of the demons are left at the site as nobody else lived to tell the tale. I think it's playing on the notion that so much evil is done in the name of God, but those who are viewed in opposition to God are often times the ones who are really going to protect you. "The devil" came to protect her against the unfair judgement of "God".

She would seem to be limping because she was gathering power with a ritual, summoning demons(?) and once she had it, she broke the chains (the moment where she sings 'drive your son like a railroad spike' and brings her arms down) and was unbound, free to use her full power.

youtube just tossed this into my playlist and i have never been so grateful. I have listened to this song at lest 40 times in 2 days, and been singing or humming it when i couldn't listen. i've sent it to everyone i know. this is everything. her voice, the amazing beat (from chains??!), the call and answer that mimics southern gospel (but also something more mystical), the lack in instrumentation until the end, the amazing visuals of the video (done in one shot from the time she starts singing!), the powerful vocals backing her and the enchanting choreography, the shift from her being taken to doing the taking.... this is probably my favorite song in years and my favorite video ever. i can't wait to discover more of this band. my only complaint is that it took me so long to find them and that this song is not 10 minutes longer.

Been looking for this song for YEARS. Literally since 2014. My phone with this in a playlist was stolen while I was at boot camp. The satisfaction I got when I finally figured out the name through VH1’s You Oughta Know playlist. A nearly decade long search is over.

This is one of my favorite songs, ever. I don't see Brittany have this much screen presence in the other videos nor do can I think of another song where her voice is as badassed as at 1:42-1:43 on the 'Drown Alive' part. You think she's just this awesome and we don't get to see it or she's was having a bad day/tripping and the voice is auto-tuned? Also she is gorgeous.

I only recently discovered this song along with Delta Rae but boy oh BOY are those some impressive vocals. I’m absolutely obsessed with the strength and richness in her voice and to find out that this song is about the witch trials??? All the better. I am officially a fan now.
